It’s interesting that Paul Okon Jr has signed with Benfica, he also spent time with WSW’s academy before jetting off to Belgium with his family to join Club Brugge’s academy. Could this be another Volpato scenario where he plays for Italy also or he’s more of a greater chance in representing Oz due to he’s dad’s history with the Socceroos?
But a great move.

At 16, Okon’s eldest son Paul Jnr, currently playing in the Club Brugge academy, was an influential factor in the return to Belgium, to chase his dreams of pursuing a career as a professional. “He said to me he wanted to become a professional footballer, so if that’s the case, let’s go to Europe, I told him and get you there as soon as possible.” Paul Jnr is currently embarking on a busy period, departing shortly with the Belgian giants’ under-18s for a tournament in Portugal, and many opportunities to shine across the continent. “From April onwards in Europe, it’s tournaments all round for the kids. A great chance to test themselves and play against kids from other clubs and other countries. “Without the interruptions of Covid, this season has been a big plus for his progression. “He has been able to play consistently, and at this age that is the most important thing. It was more or less just training in the Covid-hit seasons. Junior is fully entrenched in what he is doing. School is linked with football, and he and all the kids are on their journey and comfortable over here. “It’s about understanding, learning and challenging themselves every day, as well as appreciating the difficulties of what it takes to become a pro footballer. So overall the last year and this season has been a real success. “He needs to forge his own path, but from my side there is zero pressure. I’m always honest, probably too honest. I always look at my children through the eyes of a coach.”

But a great move. His dad was a proud Socceroo captain and always speaks glowingly about Australia and the Socceroos. There is zero chance his son will play for anyone but Australia.
