+x+x+xAs it turns out I'm on the plane to Qatar. Last minute decision. Went on the portal resale tonight and got tickets to all of these. Missed Germany Spain by a bee's dick. France | Australia - not yet | 22/11/2022 | Croatia | Morocco | 23/11/2022 | Swizerland | Cameroon | 24/11/2022 | Tunisia | Australia | 26/11/2022 | Korea | Ghana | 28/11/2022 | Ecuador | Senegal | 29/11/2022 | Australia | Denmark | 30/11/2022 | Canada | Morocco | 1/12/2022 | Serbia | Switzerland | 2/12/2022 | Missing Australia France but confident I'll pick one up. Awesome 😎 can’t beat actually being there in the stadium while most of us are stuck in front of a tv 🙁 I take back everything I said about Qatar and their shitty government, industrial manslaughter of thousands of contractors and their backwards culture. Qatar - the home of football in the Middle East. Hahahahaha enjoy mate...

Blew $2.5k on the tix but stuff it. Only live once.

https://www.foxsports.com.au/football/socceroos/panadol-should-sponsor-me-socceroos-coachs-big-headaches-over-world-cup-squad/news-story/f7a1b3ffde7d87123a25b3fdca9ce4cd26 Australian players will travel to Qatar for the World Cup in November – and competition for places on the plane hit overdrive with back-to-back wins over New Zealand in the space of four days. Coach Graham Arnold fielded a full-strength side on Thursday in Brisbane, but a scrappy performance resulted in just a 1-0 win. He changed the entire starting XI – and handed out six debuts, including five off the bench, in Sunday’s 2-0 win. The first half of that match was again underwhelming, but the second half was much-improved, with the Socceroos playing with courage and creativity going forward while remaining impenetrable at the back. Many members of the Sunday squad, which Arnold labelled his ‘Plan C’ for Qatar, put their hands up for a spot on the final roster for the World Cup.

Who i want... Ryan Leckie Sains Rowles Behich Mooy Rogic Luongo Hrustic Boyle McGree
Playing Angeball system with constant rotational movement, high press and inside fullbacks. I know Luongo is a surprising one but this is predicated on him starting to play games for Boro.
2nd xi... Langers Atkinson Souttar Deng Goodwin Holland Genreau Irvine Mabil Duke Kuol
Extras... Ruka, Metcalfe, Delbridge, Grey wiggle
Who i think arnie will pick.... Ryan Atkinson Sains Rowles Behich Mooy Hrustic Irvine Boyle Duke Mabil
2nd xi... Grey Wiggle Karacic Wright Souttar King Metcalfe McGree Rogic Kuol Taggart Goodwin
Extras.. Langers, Delbridge, Genreau, Tilio

+x+xI understand that first we have to name a 35 man squad that is then cut down to 23 So 35 players Ryan Redmayne Vukovic Birighitti Karacic Atkinson Stensness Sainsbury Souttar Rowles Wright Deng Degenek King Behich Elder Mooy Hrustic Rogic Genreau McGree Irvine Luongo Dougall Leckie Boyle Mabil Goodwin Tilio Garang Kuol Taggart Duke Maclaren D'Agostino Tete Yengi It’s 55 man provisional squad then cut down to 26 by 16 October. So they’ll have to name the provisional squad sometime in sept. Wonder if it will be before NZ games. not much time after A League starts. Mclaren , Yengi, D’Agostino and Tilio but no Cummings - Really??

+xNo Goodwin, can't take it seriously The sudden omission of Sainsbury across the board after a few wayward passes in a friendly is also ridiculous. Got to remember players called for those risky passes as well and he made a good tackle on Wood on the dome and settled after that. Oar has left out Duke. Game of opinions.

+x+xVersatility is probably going to get you there. It's annoying including players I know Arnold will include. Ryan Langerak Redmayne Strain, Atkinson, Souttar, Sainsbury, Rowles, Deng, Degenek, Behich, Elder Mooy, McGree, Irvine, Rogic, Devlin, Metcalfe, Genreau Mabil, Boyle, G Kuol, Taggart, Cummings, Maclaren, Leckie Players like Brimmer, Piscopo, Folami and Ikon can all beat the man and should really be getting in. I can't wait for the rigid old guard to be gone. I’d be Fitting Brimmer and , Piscopo in somehow. I wouldn't, it's our most competitive position, they won't start playing for another 2 weeks, in the A-league they chose to ignore the opportunity to go OS like Baccus, devlin, and metcalfe.

https://www.theroar.com.au/2022/09/06/graham-arnold-cant-possibly-pick-a-league-players-for-the-world-cup/
Article to be taken with 1 grain of salt - but says Arnold may not select AL based players for WCUP due to not playing enough before tournament. Can’t imagine likes of Redmayne, Leckie, JMac etc not being in Qatar though

The more that transpires the more I think some kind of power ranking is worth considering. The issue is that Arnold has his set players as well e.g. Behich, Leckie and I think that bears weight in the consideration. Why di I have the suspicion that Tom Glover will play the NZ away game? If Grant gets in before Strain I'll be livid. My power rankings based on minutes and form. It bugs me that someone like Genreau gets picked and gets all the press but barely plays a minute. We won't know if we can be better with these players unless they get on the field an extended period together. We've still not seen Hrustic and McGree link up to know whether it's viable or not.
RB: Karacic, Strain, Atkinson, Miller CB: Rowles, Sainsbury, Souttar( special provision), Deng, Wright/Degenek, McGowan, Iredale, Burgess LB: Elder, Gersbach, Behich, Davidson, King CDM: Devlin, Dougall, Baccus, Jeggo, Luongo (Reading pending) CM: Mooy/Irvine/Hrustic (lock), Genreau, Metcalfe ATT: Boyle, Mabil, Taggart, Ruka, Duke, Iredale
Injured/MIA: Smith, Stensness, Rogic.
Then there's the A League which we don't have too much insight as yet. Albeit exhibitions, they do it in the league too, I can't help but think how much better it'd be to have Ikon, Folami and Piscopo for some flair instead of, say, Duke who is nearly a lock in Arnie's eyes.

Callum Elder has started the last 4 games, while Gersbach has played every minute in the league this season. Surely they both have to be above a which, who can’t get a game for the worst SPL club? Picking Behich will be the worst demonstration of Arnie’s favouritism, but we all know it’s going to happen.

This was my team right after we qualified with consideration to the France game. Atkinson is slipping away. Karacic is getting a stronger claim. I don't know if power rankings are worth it. Hrustic will be there but his situation is getting annoying. Elder has started to kick on again while mainstay Behich will get his fitness up. I'm glad I can write this and not be too concerned with Rogic's omission.
Ryan Sainsbury Souttar Rowles Atkinson Mooy Elder Hrustic Irvine Boyle Taggart
This is my rejuvenated team that must be expedited. Of course some variation and Mabil certainly is there. Take out Genreau and have Mabil as LW. I think McGree is best suited as a player who can either go wide or central. Thankfully Deng should be able to slot in if Souttar doesn't make it.
Ryan Souttar Sainsbury Rowles Atkinson Devlin Elder Genreau McGree Hrustic Boyle

+x+x+x+x+x+x+x+x+xWe've just recorded goals scored from Australia's forwards, wingers and attacking mids since 2005. Duke has the third highest strike rate per game of all players, behind Kennedy and Cahill. We are excluding Oceanian games. Mitch scores goals at a rate of 4.1 goals for every 10 games played. Or 0.41 goals per game. Maclaren is about 3.2 goals every 10 games played - or 0.32 goals per game. Both are better than John Aloisi, and way in front of our supposed superstars, Harry Kewell and Mark Viduka. Leckie is 1.8 goals for every 10 games played, or 0.18 goals per game. This is pretty atrocious for a guy playing as a forward for 72 games! Food for thought for who makes the plane trip. Honestly think goals scored against minnows should only count as 0.5 goals! And goals scored in crucial WCQ’s and actual WCUP & Asian Cup should carry more weight. Arnold should think of Who can actually score against good opponents at a massive tournament?! Kewell scored crucial goals for Roos when needed, as did Aloisi and Cahill. Who in current squad can produce a goal under heavy pressure??! And not just from penalty spot…
Tilio, D"agostino and Taggert. Tilio and D'agostino having played in the A-League haven't experienced "heavy pressure" much if at all. Tilio hasn’t played in any heavy pressure matches? He played in the grand final with Atkinson which they won last year... The A-League is significantly below international football and light years different to a World Cup game as far as defensive pressure is concerned. The problem we have is that because of Covid we haven't been able to arrange enough international friendlies to blood and give the young up and coming attacking players the opportunity to test and prove themselves against better players so we don't know whether any of them will cope with the jump in standard. Most players don't make the grade, even players like Scott McDonald, a prolific scorer with a league career 196 goals, failed to get his name on the score sheet in 26 internationals for Australia. If it's good enough for Arnie to thrust into an high pressure like the UAE and Peru games then it's good enough for a World Cup? Kye Rowles was thrown into the deep end and was probably our best player against Peru and he's only experience has been playing in the a-league. The biggest disadvantage for a-league players is they won't have enough matches to put them into contention when the a-league season starts in October, the stakeholders of concern should move the season sooner to August and increase the a-league players chances of making the plane to Qatar but we know not every decision with the a-league has been about what's best for the football so I have my doubts this will happen. I can see a few moves being made to Europe as that might make or break when trying to get into contention. McDonald wasn't effective because the responsibility he was given was not sustainable to bring it into international football, alot of the times the Socceroos play 4-2-3-1 where McDonald worked well in a 4-4-2 as a twin striker which they rarely used and struggled as the sole striker. My initial comment was about the statement that Tillio and D'agonstino were right to be the strikers that could take players on and score rather than us sticking to using finishers. I stand by my assertion that they have not proved that they are capable to do that at international level with the increased level of pressure applied by the defences because the quality of the players is much higher than anything they have had to cope with in the A-League. We have 2 friendlies only before the squad for the WC has to be announced so if Arnold wants to change his tactics as has been suggested then the likes of Tillio, D'agostino etc need to start and/or get good time on the pitch against NZ. Similarly if he wants that type of player to come off the bench to make an impact in the WC then he needs to play them in that role against NZ. As I said previously we haven't had the opportunity to develop these players like we would have in friendlies pre Ange but if we want to use them then we need to give them a chance. Playing mind games and throwing people in at the deep end is not a strategy to use very often. Let's see if Arnie will organise some more friendly matches, time wise it's not ideal but the more the better if he wants to try out some new players. How many international windows are left outside of the NZ games? None. The pandemic has thrown a spanner in the works for developing players in an ordered way.
