He might really regret declining a WCup spot if/when he doesn’t get senior Italy call up. Oh well - credit to Arnold for asking him at least

If it was a "last minute" phone call, then I suspect that it was just a face saving exercise from Arnold. Mates, the kid is playing in the Serie A for crying out loud!. Arnold should have locked him in weeks ago, telling him to keep it under his hat.
Arnold's problem has always been man management. To have chased Langerack to come back into the fold and then not to have given him a single minute in the friendlies against New Zealand was an absolute joke. No wonder Langerack had "retired" from internationals. I am amazed that the playing group seem solidly behind Arnold, as he shows total disrespect for some of the players that could/should be lock ins. I guess therein is the clue. When you're in, you don't rock the boat as Arnold has made perfectly clear that if you're out, you stay out no matter what!
I so look forward to a new Aussie coach post the World Cup. Someone who selects on form and playing, not merely mates rates. By selecting his duds, Arnold will seal his own fate.

Well good job asking
pretty unusual to spend 16 years in australia and see himself as italian but wish him the best for his career
its a sign we are starting to get better in the pre 15 phase of development. Super curious how much a difference a second division makes!

Very Disappointing ...

I don’t think he’s ruled out playing for Oz. Firstly who’d wanna play under Arnold? Secondly he would most likely get garbage minutes. Thirdly he might upset Roma, Italian fans, stifling perhaps future opportunities at Roma or other clubs.
He is still 18yo, with a handful of club caps, whose never represented Australia at any level. At his age, I’d say his focus is on developing his skills set and establishing himself as a first team player with Roma, rather than achieving world cup glory with Australia. We are very unlikely to get out of the group, he wont likely see many minutes, and there are several downsides which could impact his career. I’d say the boy is making a completely rational decision.
If Italy comes knocking he will choose them, but if not he may be open to playing for us in around 12 months time for the Asia cup. Hopefully FFA handles this well, maturely and keep the lines of communication open.

I doubt he does. Clearly he's being told by the people around him that he's destined for the Italy NT and he's chasing the glory. His decision and I respect that. However I hope if he fails to live up to the hype and he comes a calling to the roos in 2-3 years time we tell him to fuck off.

Mate, the kid doesn't Wana play Australia Arnie can be on his knee begging n he still gonna reject. Just like if U r fat ugly guy asking a super model who dating a handsome movie star , U can beg all U want the chance is she gonna say no.

Let's celebrate our good stories like Kuol.

Volpatto is not the only player we are calling to be being capped without having represented Australia at junior levels these days....

To play devil's advocate for a young bloke, would you or any one of us, commit to being on a squad without ANY guarantee you will ever get any minutes and knowing this decision will jeopardise any chance you have of playing at a higher level??.. The kid has not represented Australia in any way before (has he? sorry if Im wrong) and in fact has been "driven out" by football in Australia to chase his dreams elsewhere...... Cut a young kid some slack I say.

Cut a young kid some slack I say. Exactly. The kid is young, Italy is not in the WC this year, so he's just leaving his options open. He would know that even if selected he probably won't see any minutes this WC as previously capped players will almost certainly be prioritised. Arnie will probably be gone within the next 12-24 months, so a different coach may be preferrable to him. Getting into the Italian squad would be far more difficult and thus he may see it as a greater goal and achievement. Maybe the kid just likes to challenge himself. If 10 years go by and he still hasn't played for Italy, I'm sure our door will still be open.

U just miss the point...he DOESN'T want to play for Australia...U guys keep coming up with excuses for him. He laughed on his Twitter when we lost to Japan and at the time he thought we would have missed the world cup.

I have an issue with his team around him trying to blackmail Australia into capping him and then convincing him to not play for us when he finally actually proved himself.

Sure, we are not unique in going to "ancestry.com" or handing out citizenship willie nillie for sportmen/women (in all sport btw just look at our gymnastics, track and field, weightlifting squads etc etc over the years) but I would argue that the majority of other nations, with players that where born and played in that countries football system to some capacity, would have all had their 1st eleven players in the national youth teams at some stage... Only one off the top of my head I can think of as an exception would be Jamie Vardy.... Sure there are probably dozens of other examples, but not hundreds...... at least that I can think of.

Arnie aint Mourinho either, When Cristian comes on it looks he had a sepcific role in the team and is not required to defend. Arnie cant set him teams up like this and wont get the best out of Cristian anyway, we will have more luck throwing Kuol and cummings on with 30 mins to go.
That should literally be our strategy for all three games: sit deep absorb pressure and play on the counter, bring Kuol and Cummings on with 30 to go and see what we can do. If I see us trying to play out the back against france im going to lose my mind.
