It will be interesting to see if there are any flow on effects from the WC crowd wise. Hopefully Roar can eke out a win, 2 - 1.

Adelaide have been pretty to watch and have some young talent. Since the bakries took over ive felt less and less attachment to the roar as they run the club into the ground and will just watch the game to enjoy

+xWoop woop!! I'm more excited about the second launch than the first. Onwards and upwards Yep I'm super keen. Such a shame we have to play in Brisbane. I can't imagine much of a bump in crowd there. What do people think about the Brisbane players giving Goodwin a guard of honour before the game? I think it's weird and instinctively hate it but the comments online were all congratulating Brisbane for the gesture. It's one thing his home crowd giving him a standing ovation when he is subbed on/off but the Brisbane players? Am I a curmudgeon?

Understand these kinds of gestures when a player has had a big impact on the league, and is playing their last game before retirement etc, but being one of the better Socceroos players at a world cup? Not sure about that. Was definitely excited about the A-League being back, but have obligations tonight during the game and was instantly reminded that Paramount Plus STILL doesn't have pause/rewind functions etc. The World Cup break would have been a great opportunity for them to get something implemented, but no luck it seems.

Noting the best way this league will advance in the short term is to harness the success of the Socceroos I can understand it. On a personal level I think we should be celebrating these players, it gives the players a level of acknowledgement for not only participating but succeeding at a the greatest level.

I went to the Sydney FC v Melbourne City game at Allianz Stadium, and I have to say what a terrific game of football, that was the best $30 I spent (and I had good seats watching the game at ground level).
It was a very fast game, with end to end football and good passing by both teams, the standard of the A-League is definitely getting better.

Well , the A- league has essentially produced a Socceroos team which has recently made its 5th Consecutive World Cup , and won through to the round of 16 (and only narrowly succumbing to a team now in the semi- final boasting one of , if not the , greatest players of all- time ) . Who would have thought 20 years ago that Australian football would be able to say that ?

It was infinitely more watchable than the garbage served up friday night. I've never understood why United play the occasion so often. Give us a good crowd in a good ground and we look incredible. Put us against a team of plonkers in some far north Qld shit hole and we play ponderous laborious uninspiring football

I went to Wellington-WSW yesterday. A very mediocre game. Couldn't help but notice the precipitous drop in standard from what I've been watching recently. The speed of the game was decent, but first touch was lacking across the board and neither team could shoot to save their lives. At least the Wanderers fans put on a bit of a show in their corner. They have a good drummer. There were even a couple of flares, much to the horror of the ground security.
I don't get why Wellington still plays home games in Wollongong?

To be fair the pitch looked absolutely shocking. The pitch was terrible, which is hard to work out. It's not like they've had any rugby games or concerts there recently. There's actually been nothing. There's really no excuse for the woeful state. It is kinda sad really. It's a nice stadium. Probably the one and only stadium in the country with ocean views. It's a shame to see it fall into disrepair. Apart from a handful of NRL games and the Wellington weirdness, it's become a bit of a white elephant. We really need a Wollongong a-league team to make proper use of it.

Sydney v Melbourne City was a good game to watch. Both sides showed flair and ball movement.Lolley is such a busy and talented player and Tilio looked sharp when he came on.
Burgess puts himself about and would be a chance to be in the squad for the next WC cycle.

How long till arzani gets back to his best
his defence has improved dramatically, but he used to be able to consistently take on 2 or more players and set up an opportunity
if he defends like this and dribbles like he did in 2018 he would be a real force to be reckoned with

I'd say his fitness is back to 100% or pretty close to it. It's clear he still has that raw talent and good instincts that he had before he went to Europe. His issues seem to be all psychological. He's clearly frustrated. Probably with the trajectory his career has taken. Probably with the lack of NT selection. Whenever you see a player whinge and focus their frustration outwards, it's almost certainly a case of they don't want to deal with their own shit. Hopefully Yorke can get him back on track coz he definitely has a lot more potential than we have seen.

The fact his defense has improved considerably suggests to me its not an attitude problem a reminder of just how good he was pre acl https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=1u34hTKeKeQi suspect he will be back. Probably a year or two from now.

So after watching the world cup the past few weeks I found it really hard to watch the victory vs Macarthur match. Just seemed so slow and tiresome, even when folami scored I felt as if everyone looked like they were moving in slow motion, it was a tidy finish but I think we've been a bit spoilt. Hopefully get more into it next week.

The players also haven't been playing for a few weeks, so they wouldn't be at the same fitness that comes from playing competitive games every week. There are also the difference is stakes. Whether it's conscious or sub-conscious, players are always going to lift their performances for the opportunity to be crowned best in the world compared to a regular season match.

Looking back to last years season, there does seem to be a trend where afternoon games have less passed per 90 (sometimes a couple of hundred less) than night games i wonder if it is possible for all games to be scheduled for the evening if we keep with summer football

I sat down to watch the Sydney City match on Saturday night and found it soooooo slow by comparison. It is what it is I suppose.

Always enjoy the Melbourne derby. Aiden O'Neill is another who wouldn't look out of place in the national team squad but we're just so stacked in midfield. It's a blessing and a curse because there are so many combination questions. Secretly hoping the older guard make way pretty soon.

What a disgrace! Their faces are on TV. Seriously?!! I've seen fans around the world run on and taunt but to actually hit someone or throw, was it a bucket? is a crime.

+x+xIt’s really hard to believe these morons. We have by far the worst fans of any sport in Australia. If that is the case , do you have a solution ? Get new fans? Make normal people interested and keen to take their families to football. With strength in numbers, these devolved thugs would in time become irrelevant and die out. Incidents like this make that pretty much impossible though. It's clear that we are being held hostage by these "active support" imbeciles. Game really has no chance in this country with supporters like these.

In no way does it explain it. It’s just a really dumb thing to say. Back in the NSL, they took the grand final away from Wollongong and moved it to Parramatta (where they got less than half the crowd than they would have otherwise). It was disappointing and annoying, but it never occurred to anyone to assault the opposing players and referees over it.

It's the same as fans that stand alone side those that commit shit acts and don't push them forward to face the music. I fucking hate this about fan groups. Disgusting.
As an inaugural Victory member I'm ashamed. Identify and ban the hooligans that entered the pitch for life! And ban the North terrace for the remainder of the season.
Apply a closed door home game penalty to Victory for 3 matches and even a points deduction.

I’m a Victory supporter - what that fuck-tard did to Glover needs to be thrown in jail. Absolutely disgusting and completely counter-productive.
Football is going to get bombed back to the stone-age by the media after that shit. And you know what, we just about deserve it this time.

They were probably chuckling away at some of the small protests so far and thought they'd gotten away with it. Now with this they're probably thinking 'ahh geez now we have to go back to work and do something. This will give me more work.'

+x+x+x+x+x+xWalk out, great Flares, fine (but don't throw them) Pitch invasion (when necessary) But never fucking touch a players or official.
I'm a victory fan and this has fucked us Yeah it’s not good at all. I'm sure 99% of victory fans feels the same way. Here was the chance to stick together against a shit decision and a handful of fuck sticks have ruined it. Nail head No. Because the APL just would have taken the walkout on the chin and carried on as usual. Have to admire the kahunas of the lads that invaded the pitch. Good on them. Went pear shaped after that as we all saw. Anyway fuck the APL. In some ways I hope this hastens the demise of the A league. Well this event does put it back on the APL to respond. They were probably chuckling away at some of the small protests so far and thought they'd gotten away with it. Now with this they're probably thinking 'ahh geez now we have to go back to work and do something. This will give me more work.' Huh? There was never much chance of them backing out, but these actions have taken that option away from them.

They'd been hoping to turn up Monday after a few banner protests and that's that. Now they're going to be annoyed about having to deal with something so large. This will affect their course to a certain extent.

And therefore ironically making the league even more dependent on cash grab solutions like Sydney hosting finals. They've guaranteed the very thing they wanted to prevent.

For any who missed it. Seems some Vic fans have jumped the fence and just stormed the pitch and Glover and ref were in the box. Way too quickly they've been surrounded and a metal bucket type object just gets shoved or rammed into the side of Glover's head. The ref ends up covered in some white powder material whatever that was and then the bench has rushed on to try and help.

Passion my ass. It's only used to create drama and poses a risk to everyone in the vicinity.

A bad week for football in Australia just became unimaginably worse. We'd better hope that Paramount doesnt use this as a lever to pull the plug.

The thing is there are plenty of fans who do care. The next step should be turning up in droves in defiance of these idiots. This is what I hate. A business loses and everyone says it's so sad but no one ever turned up to buy anything. Get involved and be part of it. Turn it into the positive thing you desire.

Whatever scrag of shit picked up the bucket and threw it did it from quite a few meters away. I hope the police are able to identify and lock him up for assault and battery.

Easily the darkest day for Oz football as far as I can remember, very sad but also very angry that it had to come down to this after the last 6 days when it just had to took an peaceful protest and then walk off but no we needed a few bad eggs to ruin it for everyone that wanted to watch the game.
This will set the game back for a long while, after the highs of the Socceroos success this week the game has suffered an spectacular own goal which I dont know if we can ever recover from.
Sigh...

Glover appearing to throw the flare back into the crowd https://twitter.com/tomcanetti/status/1604047898026864640?t=Drew_pPRDzRJZr7nORd_6Q&s=19 Calm the fuck down. I'm not justifying it. I'm just posting twitter videos

All you’ve been doing since it happened is justifying it. First the APL decision “explained it”, then it was implicitly fine because you hoped it would hasten the demise of the aleague, now you post Glover throwing a flare back as an excuse. Dunno what the fuck is wrong with you.

Dunno what the fuck is wrong with you. I don't know what the fuck is wrong with you. The video shows what happened just before the pitch invasion. I'm not blaming Glover at all. Did Glover throw the flare back into the crowd? It appears he did. Does that mean they can run on the field and assault him? No it does not.

Of course it doesn’t justify the assault at all, but jeez, what an idiot. He probably deserves a sanction himself.” is what I posted in another thread. So I agree. It’s just your general attitude that kind of creeps me out. It’s like you’re happy that Australian football got dealt such a devastating blow. I simply do not understand it.

Unfortunately, this is just a reflection on the cultural problems Anglo football fans have exhibited for decades. They should just leave their loutish behaviour back in England and not bring it to Australia. There is no place for it and it sickens me to see so many apologists trying to deflect by saying it's only a few idiots when clearly it's an Anglo club cultural issue. They should be kicked out of the league....

Whilst England is not without its faults as a footballing nation, Australia's problems with fan violence do not stem from Anglo football fans. I covered the game in Australia for close to ten years, and at no point were any of the fan troubles that I witnessed caused by Anglo fans. We have to accept that there are ethnic rivalries and issues that exist without Australian football. I don't see that as a bad thing when channeled and utilised properly, but your take is very wrong.

https://medium.com/@arribaAUS/the-reality-of-the-australian-professional-leagues-d3f37f62969d Much was made on New Year’s Eve 2020, when finally, after years of clamouring, the owners of the A-League clubs announced that they would be taking operational control and majority ownership of the A-League itself from Football Australia. There was fanfare, excitement and, crucially, hope; Australian football had found itself in a position where change for the sake of change was enough to enthuse Australian football fans. This same phenomenon was replicated in 2021, where the APL announced a four, maybe eight, year broadcast deal with Network 10 and Paramount Plus, which will be discussed in further detail later on in this piece. In both moments, there was little questioning of detail, planning, or what these decisions actually meant or would look like.

this bloke is spot on the money, and it continually surprises me how few have cottoned onto this. The A-league is now under the control of foreign interests. Silverlake and City are aligned and control 40% of the league just between themselves. Add to that whoever is controlling the Jets. Add to that SFC and WSW (the two clubs who would have voted with City and Silverlake in favour of selling the grand final to Sydney). So effectively, 4 clubs control the other 8. People still think the FA has some sort of oversight role, yeh, maybe ostensibly. But we just have to remember what happened with the transfer fee proposal to see that this group has the power to put the kybosh on anything the FA wants to implement. The FA will now have the power to punish the Victory, and no one is going to go against that because who doesn't want to see the Victory lose points and be taken down a peg or two? For City and the Sydney clubs it's win win!!

The GF sell to NSW is purely about $$$ coming into the league. And ultimately to the club's. It is that simple. Nothing more. Nothing less What happened with the transfer fee proposal ?? You don't realise the biggest opponent to it is the PFA?

C’mon people. Trev and Muz are clearly not justifying the actions of the morons. They are simply pointing out that it is no coincidence that emotions were running high at today’s game. Everyone on this forum was encouraging fans to stand up against the APL decision. Now you’re all pretending that the APL decision had nothing to do with heightened emotions. Of course it did.
It’s almost impossible to believe that it is less than two weeks since I was standing in Park Road, Milton watching a last minute shot from Kuol almost take Argentina into extra time … today is a total disaster.

I want to support this thread. This Melb derby incident can potentially give the A-League the history and traditions that builds and grows a game on a national scale. I know it is a shocking incident to have happened but these two melb clubs just created a blood feud that can be absolutely epic. I want these two clubs to absolutely loathe each other. Heck, Victory could become that team that everyone absolutely hates and makes it more fierce than ever. City vs Victory can potentially become Celtic v Rangers, Boca v River Plate tier if we push it right. I know it's raw but tonight's events could become a catalyst of something fanatical that this nation craves and unite us more than ever.
Everybodys favourite lurker.

Why wont Paramount put the replay up?! There is finally something worth watching aha What a night to decide to go to a Christmas market instead of staying home to watch the soccer.

So without talking about the pitch invasion as such. Izzos end copped more flares than Glovers but he didn't do anything stupid. Glover throws one back, very provocatively close to the fence, then later throws one into the crowd. Didn't Vukovic get 12 months for a high five? I feel like Glovers careers could be on the ropes, not only is it dangerous it brings the game into disrepute, a pitch invasion wasn't on the cards until a flare was thrown into the crowd.
Honestly I can't see how he doesn't get multiple years. Or more.
