With a Second Division kicking off next year, I believe the time is ripe for Football to embrace the concept of an Inter State/Territory Cup based on the existing Federations.

This year it could be run in the later half of the year, with two knockout phases.

Phase 1 - two games (Game A and B) drawn from a hat, first out gets home advantage, winners progress. Losers play off for final spot

Northern NSW
Northern Territory
Tasmania
Western Australia

Phase 2: Knock out, two rounds and final

Australian Capital Territory
New South Wales
Queensland
South Australia
Victoria
Winner Game A
Winner Game B
Best Loser

In 2024 this could become a whole of year series, both Mens and Womens. It may even be worthwhile from a developmental perspective to have younger age groups participate. There are enough International windows to have a full series.

The 2024 draw would be an "event" made for TV/streaming, with the first team drawn being the home team. In later parts of the draw, this may not work out as the idea would be to have 4 home and 4 away games each year. In 2025 the home team would reverse and so on.

I think it's awesome when you look up old players like Billy Vojtek and they've got appearances for Victoria on their record.  It would be cool to bring it back, although i don't know where the money's going to come from.

Hard to State teams ever being resurrected at senior level. SA scrapped state team football in 2009 for financial reasons. Would be good at underage level however.

As others have said, unworkable at senior level nowadays but a must across multiple junior levels. Further to that, there must be multiple sides for certain States as happens in TAC Cup AFL carnivals:

VIC Metro
VIC Country
NSW Metro
NSW Country(for non-NorthernNSW regions)

Maybe this can include a resurrected AIS as a 2nd ACT representative further down the line💡

We need to hold scouts hands on a domestic and international level. If you make this a premium junior/adult-youth tournament, just free livestream the shit out of this on YT or Twitch and promote the crap out of our youth products.

Equivalent to how the AFL promote their draft classes. Highlight reels galore.

Everybodys favourite lurker.

Underage football has had rep teams playing for some time up until about under 16.

A couple of times senior Tassie teams have played South Aus state teams - excluding professional /A L players. They were a popular concept here.

I think it was about 2010 -2012.

There were two games played. I have vague memories of both SA and Tas winning one game each. Both games were played in Tas.

I also have vague  memories of SA playing Tas off the park in one game, but losing. Tassie central striker, Chris McKenna, is the reference point.

There was also an NPL Cup game between South Hobart and SA NPL winner in about 2013, whose name I can't remember. Campbelltown? The coach was a former Adel Un assistant coach - whose son played A L football for AU as a RB and CB.

I  can't remember  the SA club coach's  name - Joe? I chatted to him after the game. He was very magnanimous and gracious given the SA NPL team lost. At the time it appeared like a Tas v South Aus state game for Tassie spectators.

I like the idea, but the cost of including NT would be great.  Without the NT, you have 8 teams, which could be either play on a knockout type competition or 2 groups of 4 where top of Group A plays 2nd of Group B and vice-a versa. The 2 winners of the second round play for the Australian State's Cup. Could add a sponsor's name.  Also, I like to see it as a NPL players only competition.

Pretty sure SA has scrapped all state teams at all age levels since then. CEO says the expense was too great to run them.

The club who played S.Hobart in the Australia Cup game was Campbelltown. 3-1 the score with Campbelltown playing without two of their best players. You spoke to Joe Mullen.

Thanks.

It was Joe Mullen I spoke to. His son, Daniel?, played AL football, and possibly a Socceroo game or two.

The senior interstate games definitely galvanised local interest. I seem to remember the SA team being overly physical.

Why restrict it to NPL players?

Games between states has never been really successful as far as I can remember. Not sure what the turning point would be now for them to succeed? There's a shortage of money for one thing.

Before the start of the NSL, the state team concept was maintained because of the chance to play against visiting overseas club sides. These games attracted big crowds even if state vs state games did not.

SA kept up the state team in the 80s and 90s- it was a useful stepping stone for a player to possibly advance to national teams. SA sent state teams to compete in tournaments in India, Malaysia and Vanuatu in the 80s and 90s, winning two of them. The senior state team was discontinued in 2009. These days the FSA couldn't afford to send a team to Melbourne, let alone Malaysia.

Can only provide a historical perspective on Senior Mens State teams, they were usually formed to play visiting touring sides.
Most of this is gone now as touring sides usually play ALM teams.
State teams were also a way of identifying Socceroos, but this has also moved on to the ALM.

In terms of matches of State vs State they don't have spectator interest.

Juniors State competitions have been replaced with NTC challenge in Coffs Harbour so effectively state federation academies versus other state federation academies. A junior state team competition would be great if players are selected from local Club competitions.

Personally, for juniors, I would prefer an open NPL Juniors Tournament annually at the end of the season.
Say U14's in Brisbane, U15's in Sydney, U16's in Canberra and U18's in Melbourne U21's in Hobart, they should be rotated and of course held in Newcastle Adelaide and Perth.
With approx 130 teams in each age cohort across the nation its a great way to observe the levels, different styles and identify talent.

I would not include ALM NPL Academies they should play in a National ALM Academies tournament, as we already know their level.

Its also a great way to leverage Federal, State, and local government investment in football infrastructure and sponsorship.
These are type of events they crave, interstate guests, booking accommodation, flights, restaraunts, sightseeing etc. Basketball already does this and has been for some time.

For those that don't know we had the Manchester United Nike Premier Cup. An U15 tournament that had qualification tournaments around the world.
In Australia we had tournaments in VIC and NSW, winners played off with the NZ winners. the eventual winner went to Manchester all expenses played to play winners from other nations. Huge and an ejoyable tournament. Then FFA had it changed to the NTC Coffs Harbour winners went instead. Not long after it faded away into history!

PS of course for boys and girls.

Senior men's state team soccer is dead, barring the odd anniversary match.
Interstate matches mattered when they were the consistently highest quality form of the game for spectacle, prestige, and national team selection, especially in an officially amateur environment.
The emergence of the ethnic clubs changed ideas about what was important on this front, as clubs became more important state team loyalties. State teams then became, as Arthur has noted, mostly about playing against touring teams.
Then the NSL arrived, and the states were no longer the driving force of the highest forms of local soccer.
State matches persisted through the 1980s and 90s, but they were poorly attended and created little interest.

The WA state team probably had relevance longer than most others - but this was for points already highlighted in the thread - without a team in the NSL it was a vehicle for our players to play against touring teams and I saw some great games in that time.
Then Perth Glory came along and the interest slowly waned.
With only one A League team in this state, and a state league that's not as strong as most others, the state team does still get rolled out occasionally, but the interest in it is nothing compared to what it was.

Yep, I hadn't seen this before - I'm sure I flagged this as a potential promotion method to link NPL to the NSD (if there's no conference system used as a buffer)
