And Arnold was a Penalty shootout away from not qualifying for Qatar and being sacked. All of us went into the Peru game expecting to loose. That seems to have been forgotten.

Forgotten in a thread about comments made by Postecoglou?

I don't like the way we play with Arnold, but he's philosophy transfers across to international football more easily.

As Enzo said, he did only just qualify (with significant luck), and he made massive tactical blunders against far lower teams that meant we had to go the Honduras route.

I'm finding the timing of Ange's and Arnold's lack of funding complaints to be quite 'strategic'. It is coming out just before the ALW launches on the back of a successful WWC with the Socceroos and Matildas playing a combined 9 games in less than 2 months.

I've no doubt that James Johnson has been pushing for Govt support behind the scenes. Has he now sent in a couple of better known faces now to apply a bit more public pressure in a period when there will be exposure to our national teams that the politicians are all too keen to associate with to put up or shut up.

I didn't know that the job of the Socceroos coach was to change football in Australia. With that as his aim Ange was always going to walk away defeated.

Its NOT Flytox 100% agreed but Ange, like Johnny and Les before him, felt compelled to try... At least thats what he claims......

He is right.

Yep.  As someone of his era, I feel the same.  Really thought with the A-league pulling huge numbers, world cups, Asian confederation we would be entrenched as the number 3 code by now.  There never will ever be another golden era like that.

On Postecoglou, he sold his house in Melbourne not long ago, his older son is in the Greek military, has youngs growing uo in Europe, multi-millionaire, he ain't choosing Australia over European football or St Kilda beach over sipping ouzo on the Greek Isles in retirement.

Can't fault any of this logic Kamaryn.

Reading between the lines Ange's frustration is exactly that "there is only so much new blood you can bring in and you don't have the luxury to sign players that suit your system"  He constantly spoke about changing the system so that Australia can one day produce the type of players that do suit his system.... technical, fast, forward thinking... Tzatziki - Taka players. The FFA had him jumping through hoops to apologise for PFA comments and make sure the sponsors received their moneys worth.

give it the benefit of the doubt, lets say infleunce change cause obviously he was an employee of the FA and every NT coach has their ear wouldn't you think, obviously fell on deaf ears as they say and are we NOT surprised for here we are not in much better position locally structually, still no Football home another example.
Why is it those eggball code suits keep getting great funding whilst our game keeps lagging behind.
I don't care these codes have the local runs on the board, why can't someone in there kick some doors down.
Latest press pre Roos game has not just Ange bringing up this subject Arnie has put his boot in as well hours ago.
Glad both these guys are making some noise - will it keep just being noise - most likely.

Yeah, nah. Your second paragraph is irrelevant as I don't think anyone is disputing his success/brilliance at club level nor that he tried to bring in new blood at the national level.

But where he was falling far short is that for representative teams there is only so much new blood you can bring in and you don't have the luxury to sign players that suit your system. As Enzo said, he did only just qualify (with significant luck), and he made massive tactical blunders against far lower teams that meant we had to go the Honduras route.

As a Celtic supporter I've loved watching him overhaul our team and I think he is a genuinely brilliant manager. I stay up now to watch every Tottenham game. I'm all aboard the Ange train. But there is some revisionism about the narrative that fails to acknowledge that post-Asian cup he wasn't doing the best job and his philosophy makes him a better club manager than national team manager.

Can't fault any of this logic Kamaryn.

What's your bar for success at a world cup?

Getting to the R16 is a pass for me and probably where we sit in terms of world football.

Yeah, with the team we had (and coach) going toe to toe with the eventual winners is absolutely ABOVE what I would have expected....  No argument from me there... I actually think Arnie is better suited to NT coach than many other BTW... especially with the cattle he is required to try and coral... Only a top notch man manger can get SPL, and second division European and Japanese players that far in a World Cup.... I think Ange's arrogance forced him to try and change the whole system far to early and he gave up when he realised he couldn't...  Arnie just seems to accept things are what they are, mentions not enough game time and no funding every now and then and then just relies on telling subpar players they have ANZAC spirit and can achieve anything.... It works for him ... its not sexy, its not creating any growth, but it works. The Socceroos are going to come out tomorrow morning, playing the match to end all matches and The poms are going to be going "gently gently" hoping not to get hurt before the real game vs Italy on Wednesday. A draw or even "heaven forbid" a win to the Socceroos will be lauded as the greatest thing to ever happen - instead of actually making any changes during his tenure.

I disagree that Ange hasn't left a legacy in Australian domestic football. Now any new coach is compared to the Roar days of Ange. He set the bench mark. Montgomery at CCM similarly had a significant input into how they have played over the last couple of years and, had he stayed a little longer, could have made a similar impact on the Aussie club scene.

Even non-football friends still talk of teams pulling a ROAR when they make a late comeback win, as Eurosnobs talk of "Fergie Time".

Concur with others who've stated Angeball doesn't translate well to international football. He would definitely do well with a top European team though as the players would come from teams and leagues conducive to Angeball so transitioning from club to international football would be fairly seamless.

This is total bullshit. Ange coached the worst Socceroos team we've had in 30+ years and still won an Asian cup and qualified us for Russia. Sure, I do think he made a tactical error by changing our formation in the middle of the WC qualifying campaign, but the end result speaks for itself.

Moreover, his overhauling of the NT squad was the catalyst for our improved performance in Qatar. If you look back at the teams he coached, every one of them have had success after he left. Brisbane won another toilet seat, Victory won the treble. Yokohama won the league again. And Celtic continue to dominate.

H was also the last kick of the game coming off the post from going out in the qualifiers against Syria.  He was too rigid with his vision of the beautiful game without the cattle to bring it to life.  As a manager he's better suited to club than he is to country.

Pfft. You left the Socceroos because you struggled to qualify due to a rigid enforcement of ministry philosophy that ignored the players we had, the conditions we played in and the opponents we played. It might work well for a club team with more resources than those around them who can simply replace those who don't match the system, but it doesn't work for national teams who have limited playing stock to choose from.

A lot of what he said was correct and I'm super excited by what he is doing and can't wait to see what he will continue to do, but let's not rewrite history.

Better than 3 games - 0 points - basically the same squad that won the Asian Cup - with the likelihood of another 3 games and 0 points. Let's face it he used the 2014 World Cup as a lead up to the Asian Cup. Any other country would use their confederation tournament as a preparation for the World Cup.

Great club manager and probably in a nation with abundant football talent he would be a great national manager - but you can't play the same way as better nations when they play that way better.

Do we dare mention Arnies Asian Cup "results"?

yer fair points some of you and above.
Ceiling yet ? as you know we are way way off that point.

Look Ange is Ange just as Arnie is, despite their differences in approach to their player management and tactical appraoch they BOTH have passion for our game to grow and BOTH could/can only do whats made available from their employer and talent pool.
Hard to get anything balanced under our messy and lack of directives by our past to present governing bodies.
Ange tried to play tika taka leaving us exposed Arnoe doing the opposite and both can win over support entirely from us supporters as well.
IMO many still can't accept the real factor effecting us due to our lacking unity in our game's system, the develop levels and supporters might I add.
Both have done what they think is best with what they have available, and as much as the end Qatar result was great we are still way behind imo being a strong NT in Asia let alone WC's.
We now are happy that we qualie for the WC, seriously whilst we keep having this same system, lack of unity thats mostly all we will keep achieving, sure great but whilst we keep having the lack of football played here and hopefully a NSD to come lack of unity and divide between AL NSD NPL will keep delivering the same looking ahead.
Ange's points about will anything change for the better as a whole for the game stands true, even after a successful Matildas WC here.
Its not about a minor improvements to be happy about after all these years we need a massive change in the right direction period to follow the likes of Japan as many agree bravo well done looking ahead 20+ yrs.

Well that's on him and how he set the team up isn't it?

Wanting to play like Spain without the calibre of players we have and hoping they'll play like Spain was delusional.

Isn't a coach's raison de'tre at a tournament to get results?

Haha.

Aussie football fans flip and flop on that one.  Verbeek- gets points equal to Hiddink with a worse squad against better opposition...Aussie fans :we played dour, he's shit  no Aussie spirit.  Arnold jags two 1-0 results against Denmark and Tunisia camped for most of the game in our own half- Arnie Da Best. In theory Ange has a point but it’s also quite cynical too.
Also quite click baiting if you read the article too.
No offence to the Asian Cup success but the women’s World Cup completely wins all over it, the popularity went to the next level as we saw record breaking TV ratings and sold stadiums even at neutral games.

But I do agree with the fact that we don’t want to fully embrace it due to the challenges the sport has globally which would not only require large resources but also one big thing, UNITY which as country we struggle with due to our differences from state to state. (As we saw with the COVID pandemic)

A lot easier with local sports where states will focus on easy votes from public and corporate perception, however I do agree that football deserves its fair share as we saw football gets shafted too easily so it’s shows how hard and challenging it is for football to get what it deserves and what it means to the country as saw with the national teams success and how it brings the whole nation together.

But put it this way, prior to 2005 the game was less mainstream and still seen in some quarters rightly or wrongly as ‘wog ball’ so we have come along way since those days and the game right now is a lot more popular and mainstream for the general Aussie whether it be for national teams, aleague and even more with overseas football where a kid can get connected with a FIFA game or a football jersey through the power of the internet.

Just got to have some perspective that this stuff takes time and it’s not an overnight fix, I’d say the game has come along way and has made some great strides but it’s clearly has ways to get better and improve even further which’s shows the game has not reached its ceiling yet.

Where?  At club football? He's NT results are not great.

He won the Asian Cup with a rather poor squad. He qualified for the world cup with maybe the worst Australian team in generations. And though the 2014 World Cup didn’t deliver results, Australia did not disgrace itself in a genuine group of death with, again, an extremely poor squad.

So his NT results were actually good overall considering the circumstances. It’s just that towards the end, he became unreasonably stubborn and stuck with a formation that clearly wasn’t working, seemingly out of spite towards the federation and his critics. Then he just walked away with no explanation and no succession plan. He certainly didn’t cover himself in glory with his behaviour over the last few months as NT coach. I forgive him though. He was obviously very frustrated.
