@Nicarbel, yes it was Yazbek. Agree that Irvine was given a lot of space in the game. the Lebanonese (?) seemed to target Hrustic and double team him - and of course he wants to take an extra couple of touches which doesn't help him.
We need Hrustic to play centrally. His distribution is far better then.
I wonder, as someone above said Metcalf plays for his club on the right, why Arnie had him on the left with Goodwin for a lot of the first half.

How ridiculous was that passage of play where just turned every 5 metres back and forth on the edge of the box about 4 or 5 times hahahaha

bbhoy, youve obvs got eyes on the Joeys and it is indeed promising if skilled technical players are coming through and are now 19,20, 21 years old....

Can I ask why you think they are NOT in the Socceroos  NOW if they are such world beaters?

Because the Joeys cohort I'm referring to are 14-16 years old

Kyrgyzstan getting the important stuff done while Oman lead Malaysia 1:0 at the break which is really unfortunate for Malaysia's hopes but more so I hope some ME teams will miss out.

Notice how Iredale got down the right so well? Good versatility should see players selected. We learned nothing with Duke tonight and Fornaroli will be scratching his head. I'm personally glad Fornaroli didn't play and potential score 3 because we've got to start being more decisive to have a proper set up.

Arnold press conference was interesting. June 2 is A League GF. These final two qualifiers, while dead rubbers, he said the teams that miss the A League finals won't have played some weeks so anyone there can forget selection. Also he can just select players from the grand final teams. I really don't believe any of this once he sits down and has a proper look. He also mentioned the players will be buggered after a long season.

I'm glad he mentioned FIFA points that we can hopefully sneak into pot 1. Would we actually prefer Japan so they could do some of the beating for us? Well, that hasn't always gone to plan.

June is still a big opportunity on numerous fronts.

If it's important to win I'm not sure too many will be omitted. The calculation needs to be made if it's even possible with rankings. Also if we make the Olympics then those players may be left out in June to prevent any potential injuries before July. Some players will be exhausted after a long season such as Burgess.

Circati should start both games. J League is in season so Deng and Duke are shoe-ins. I'd pick

Gauci, Bilokapic, Cook

Strain, Atkinson, Circati, Souttar, Deng, Rowles, Bos

Irvine, O'Neill, McGree, Yazbek, Metcalfe, Nisbet, Hrustic, Devlin

Yengi, Iredale, Goodwin, Boyle, Tilio, G Kuol, Silvera, Botic

We played with two up top both games. We somewhat tempted fate at left back and even centre mid with low numbers. It would just be nice to start Yazbek, Nisbet and Devlin together.

Bowden - 26 Mar 2024 10:55 PM

yeah I think that's a good comparison

pim had rotten luck with cahill and kewell getting back to back reds in 2010 and us missing a tap in early against germany. Grella and chipperfield also hit a big form slump just before the world cup. With all those obstacles we still produced one of our best performances drawing 1-1 with 10 men against ghana and winning against serbia after being hurt by germany

also analogous to pim, metcalf is getting heat despite being on the verge of buli 2 because his skill set isn't easy for fans to pick up on which reminds me of holman who was doing well for alkmaar and australia but drew a lot of heat. When holman started scoring people took notice, I wouldn't be surprised if metcalf follows a similar trajectory

on the other hand we have some very good olyroos who will soon be putting pressure on those in their mid 20s

For 1 good pass or play Metcalfe made - he stuffed up 5 others. Team doesn’t need him and lifted after he was subbed off tbh

Yeah, the Hoff is now probably first name on the teamsheet after Shankland. I don't think Devlin-Hearts is a good match anymore. Hearts are one of the strongest teams in the league, Devlin's strength is disrupting and defending, going forward not so much. He'd be better at a club in a stronger league but lower position that defends a lot, probably playing on the counter. For that matter, the Hoff might also consider a move to a better league. He's showing he could handle that.

I think Devlin in the right player to burn all the energy over 55 min or bring for the final 25 to harass a tiring opponent. O'Neill has a big tank too. This is for game akin to the South Korea game recently. We ran out of legs big time.

Arnold spoke that regeneration is a must. It happened much more last night. He's got be careful with some comments on selections as to not contradict himself.

I think there needs to be an honest talk with Duke, Behich and others. They can't be guaranteed a spot just because they were there before. This should motivate and benefit the team as a whole.

Arnold also said you can't bring in too many new players and end up confusing players. What is it then?

Good technique, seems to have time & is calm & has a great shot.

A big part of that would be the narrow defense that Lebanon seemed to employ though

Unfortunately SK jumped back to number 3 over the Socceroos now (since beating Thailand 101 is higher ranked than Lebanon 115)

Even if we win the remaining 2 games and they win. We will finish 4th in AFC FIFA ranking so pushing us back to POT 2.

Their opponents in their group are higher ranked than in our group.

Ryan will be one of the three keepers. As captain he will not be dropped from the squad barring injury. That said I hope he isn't the starter - we need someone younger to start getting real game time in competitive matches.

Goodwins late career peak is as good as any roo i can remember

I think oz football is becoming like oz cricket because of our short season at all levels, players are older when they hit their peak

Chipperfield had a similar late career peak.

just to say my pov robbos couldn't say special I put in promising @ 23yrs.
Agreed @ SFC thought he would have become a key midfielder HTF they manage some of their leading academy players that comes back and bite them having left stirs the blood what their TD's see.
Dimi, Antonis, Triantos, there were some others from memory.
He and Yazbek have the promise its bringing it out in NT games against decent opponents not ones like the cedars but a good intro kind of game same for Nisbet.

Elder and iredale both playing league 1 probably deserve a chance considering our lack of proper left back after bos.  Rowels has done the job but has no attacking nous. Circati dependent on his club situation probably deserves to be in the squad aswell.  Don't know the reason why he wasn't in this squad considering its international window and Arnie pretty much knows he don't be able to get him for the Olympics. Oneil most likely comes back into the squad but Tete yengi karacic Francois triantis niewenhoff all other possibilities.

question - do any of you actually rate the Cedars as opponents from what you saw ?
We were clunky and messy as the commbank game - jagged a arsey unexpected early goal and rest of the game was meh talking football prowess.
With their low block the amount of room both games anyone like Irvine I expect to smoother/cover his position and opponents with ease.
At times he could have laced his boots the amount of space he had - he's a worker no doubt about it thats his game and against imo a pretty ordinary cedars sad that Irvine is mentioned as best player, a DM - you'd wish for attacking players to go to town against the cedars to me, especially 2nd being a 5 zip win.
I suppose we see it differently or its our current plight what we have.
