Are there any mods around? Anyone we can contact? Is it only Bowden left? If so can another mod be appointed to help tidy up the place. It's a fucking brothel at the moment.

I think it’s just me left cause every day I’m deleting like 20+ spam threads. Trying to stay on top of them as best I can.

What so he can delete mundane threads and edit other people's stuff with vague 'it's a legal issue' bullshit? Can you appoint someone else Bowds? (This is not an application on my behalf.)

I happily would but I don’t have those powers. Only KA can appoint mods but he’s left FTBL and no one else has appeared to introduce themselves as his replacement.
I fear that this forum has become abandoned unfortunately.

Anyone here know how to contact the possible owner of the site?

It's not like everyone needs to care or want to know but the amount of inaccurate information isn't enjoyable.

I think forums are all disappearing and that's probably the future

Apart from bowden would need someone who never gets into fights, gets perosnal and posts regularly. Johnsazs and chrondo are the only ones in that category i know? Maybe others. Barca? Melcity guy? Wonder why so few a league fans have stayed. Its a shame it is hard to get all football fans together in one place

I hope this place doesn't disappear I just found it. So many good posters with interesting content.
I used to post on BigSoccer years ago, left for many years, and last time I looked it was dead but still operating. If this place ever keels over that would be a ready to go alternative on a similar platform.
Pretty sure the GGArmy used to have a forum but I can't find it anymore.
I liked FVS as a Victory supporter although it was pretty loose (part of the charm). But they closed the forum to focus on their podcast and shifted it all to a discord. You have to subscribe to the podcast to get access to the discord. They'd sufferred a really serious hack too I understand which killed the forum at one point before it came back.
I feel like message boards are dieing off in favour of other digital platforms (reddit, discord, FB etc.) but I like the format better on sites like this.
I wonder what it costs/takes to run a forum using a popular forum software like XenForo which has pretty good functionality.

So it costs $60/month for a XenForo starter pack for anyone keen to start a new forum haha: https://xenforo.com/purchase/A lot of forums have ads so that might be revenue to offset the cost? No idea how it works tbh.

This place is a treasure trove of historical knowledge, I hope it's backed up somewhere. Would be a massive loss.
Yeah I prefer forums to Reddit. I don't like how topics are dead after a day or two on Reddit.

Very different type of treasure trove of historical data, but you could make a fun documentary out of that forum

Copy of email sent to this fellow this morning. (Daniel Findlay < DFindlay@nextmedia.com.au> Hope I haven't drawn attention to something that they then say 'why are we even keeping this thing going?'. ------------------------------------------8<-------------------------------------
Thanks for getting in contact.
I'm a user for the football forum section on the ftbl.com.au website. LInk here. https://forum.insidesport.com.au/Football
It's a comprehensive football centric forum that's been running for almost 20 years.
It is not as popular as it once was but it is still a thriving online community for all things football related.
In the past when Kevin Airs was the editor of 442 Kevin had the ability to appoint moderators to the forum to maintain the integrity of the platform and remove spam and other associated mod duties.
When Kevin was still with 442 there were approximately 10 or so moderators. Over time that number has swindled to one. Having a conversation with the last remaining moderator about getting new ones appointed he said to me he's not sure how that could be achieved as all points of contact have disappeared over the years.
Recently the site has been under constant spam attacks from Thai betting bots. The one remaining moderator (a volunteer) is having trouble keeping on top of cleaning the site up and constantly monitoring it.
To finally get to the point.
As an avid user of the forum since 2008 it would be fantastic if the forum continued in one form or another. Is there any way for other moderators to be appointed?
If you are interested there is a discussion here about this very subject. https://forum.insidesport.com.au/3129051/Farking-Thai-spam
Thanks again.

Facebook is fucked. They don't have continually running threads. It's throw up a shit opinion and then it's gone in a day never to be seen again. Forums are old hat and probably used by older people but are a far better format for me and what I want to do. A really good forum that's been running forever is https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/It's an every subject imaginable forum. Has it's limitations but it's still good.

+xI happily would but I don’t have those powers. Only KA can appoint mods but he’s left FTBL and no one else has appeared to introduce themselves as his replacement. I fear that this forum has become abandoned unfortunately. Time for you to take your rightful place as the ultimate forum leader and start your own. I reckon Matty Ryan would be looking at some retirement investments.

Yes hats off to you Bowden as mentioned. Good point by zimbos. Why not ? You always keep tabs whats doing here better of your own. I’m sure most if not will jump from here and it may draw back some of the long time posters of the past. Im sure we could all contribute a little to help if needed.

A good start would be if the IS bot stoped spamming the forum with all the articles on its site. Especially as the articles are not related to the threads. In Australian Football there are threads about European Football. No one engages with these threads too.
It's clear people are not engaging with this forum as they once used to. I'm surprised it is still going.

Forum functionality e.g., no obvious notifications, can't skip to most recent posts until there are 6 pages in the thread, ease of editing, search function, mobile posting functionality etc. Also the number of active posters atm. I reckon it's getting busier from when I started posting but I wasn't here in the heyday. But message boards aren't fashionable anymore. I doubt there's a poster here in their 20s. What it does have is a lot of amazing, pashionate and knowledgable posters. That's golden. It makes the place a lot of fun.

It was a hub for quite a few things but unfortunately when IS took over, they seemed to change tact. I get that they have their own vision and way of doing things, but I would have said that perhaps keeping the core of what made this such a successful place should have been kept. I don't see the engagement on here as much as I used to and that isn't great for the game in general.

Again, I just implore anyone in charge to backup the posts ASAP. It's a treasure trove of stories of times that aren't well covered. Would be criminal to lose it all forever.

Shot me mate a note to ask if there was an update and got this result. Not yet, my apologies.
We very much appreciate your offer but we're currently working through our wider plans for ftbl and the forums.
I should be able to share more in the next week or two.

Open for debate ... suggestion.... to help bring back users...
A lot of the remaining forum users are quite knowledge pertaining to a range of areas in Football..... further many have key want issues....
What about we start to post threads of some size i.e. 400 to 650 words.... and IMPORTANTLY if we disagree with what's written lets discuss it rather than attack...
I think Football is lacking aside from the Roar, any real online forum with detailed analysis.... we do have article on this site... but I was more thinking of forum driven articles...

I think Football is lacking aside from the Roar, any real online forum with detailed analysis.... we do have article on this site... but I was more thinking of forum driven articles... Don't we all do that already ;) In the old days we had a few bloggers on here - notably posters like Cold Toast Gaz - who posted regular articles on anything they thought worth airing. Seems such a long time ago. The time it takes to create considered and detailed posts and threads is probably something we all appreciate without really thinking about. You have to have a lot of time on your hands to do that and many people just don't have the time and/or word craft to do it. We can get posters like decentric who spend a lot of time putting together detailed analysis based on his knowledge and own experience, and due to his writing style and delivery can alienate people enough that they find it hard to let go of that. If we want the content, then as Midfielder is suggesting, disagree without the attacks, slurs and ongoing mockery and make the forum a place to pose thoughts, disagree constructively either in detail or with a few words, but at the same time respect the effort of any poster for their own experience, judgement and knowledge. I find that at this stage there is low enough activity to see everything posted over the last couple of days on the front page. If any revival or new forum design and plan results in higher traffic, or worse combining many areas into one volume list, then current posts will be pushed back to a second page or beyond again. Honestly - as annoying as it is to find current threads across a number of pages I think I would welcome that inconvenience with the increased traffic. Finally - I think some of you actually fail to appreciate the true beauty of Thai betting spam. It makes the front page look so pretty and lets us know that our forum is recognised and appreciated in the global online environment.
When I wear their colours, I am the club.

Might be worth refreshing the sticky threads btw.
- A-League General Chat - NSD General Chat - State League General Chat - Socceroos and Mens National Teams General Chat - Matildas and Womens National Teams General Chat
Also an announcement/rules sticky thread, maybe with a list of current mods so people know who to reach out to.

That's what I was thinking. With all the spam I think the key threads need to be stickied to the top. They'll be bumped anyway utnits annoying having to load a page or 2 (I know there's a search function). I think the forum is mature enough (it may or may not have been before) that people know all the good stuff it at the top. Add AA of course.

+xIs there a tab you can hit that brings up all new posts since your last visit ? The way I do it is sort the topics by "Last Post", then at the end of the topic title is a right angle bracket, click that to "Jump to first unread post".

I have just checked and it looks to me like the 'add image' function has been changed to just the ones now displayed. I am sure we used to be able to choose to search for an image on our computers and nothing lets me do that now. Might be a size saving direction for the forum hosts so they don't have to maintain a set of individual thumbnails/images - once chosen, we could delete the image on our computers so they are stored at the forum end.

Yeah I checked myself. I'm almost sure that in the past if you hit that 'add image' it gave you an option to upload an image. Also can the bloke using Mono's avatar change it to something else please. Harambolus(?) or something.

Thanks Guus, I'll give it a go..... All and well fellas recent posts, RIMB I don't think there is that much disrespect overall. Obviously he said she said stuff that I'll put my hand up being guilty of but out and out abuse ? Sure one or 2 do but most not really. I think its pretty healthy amongst majority of us - we all know where we stand regards to the game and that obviously enhances debate what we're after in the first place.

Here's the latest between Dan and myself. Me:Thanks Dan,
It'd be a shame to see that forum get wound up though. If that looks like it may be the case going forward could we be contacted with a view to keeping it running in some other form?
Thanks again.Daniel Findlay Aug 19, 2024, 3:48 PM (18 hours ago) to me I can share a little more on that - at this stage we're definitely keeping the forums operating - we just haven't had any advertising and commercial support for the main ftbl site for a while so we're at a bit a crossroads.
I think one option would be to try and find a publisher for the site who had the time and resources to invest in growing it again so that may be the path we head down but I will certainly keep you informed with any developments on that front.
All the best,
DanMe:I can shed a little light on why there's little engagement and growth. The original website used to have the main articles on the page with a 'join the discussion/comment' section below the article which drove new users onto the site. There were literally hundreds of active posters every day. As more and more of the publishing was pushed onto facebook etc that section was taken away from the online articles which is, in large part, why it's become a bit of a backwater.
Any sort of 'join the discussion' tagline on the facebook articles would help no end getting new users onto the forum but then it's a matter of where you're going to get the most bang for your buck ad revenue wise I'd imagine..
If worst comes to worst it would be ideal if the site could be archived for export to a new forum in some form or another. Like I said there's a dedicated and engaged bunch of users currently engaged on the site.
The discussion continues here if you're interested. https://forum.insidesport.com.au/3129051/FTBL-Forum-Future-Discussion?PageIndex=3

I reckon they'll do a desktop review and go 'what's this costing us?' and 'what are we making from it?' and decide to pull the pin. They'd have to be making next to nothing from it you'd think. Then again it seems most of the content is scraped from the net and and posted holus bolus and AI generated so maybe it doesn't cost a lot to run? I just hope we get enough warning to get some replacement thing up and running.

Thanks again for all your help and keeping us informed. Cheers for keeping this thing going mate.... And props to Bowden for moderating btw. I know I can fly off the handle sometimes but I love having this "space" to get shit off my chest. Yeah maybe..... Whatever is the Version 2 of this place, let me know... Ill jump on if thats the case. If this place all disappears "in the middle of the night", post something on Reddit ill find it eventually :)

Banner advertising is completely dead and 'sponsored' articles are dying too. The only real pathway to make money (or just to break even) is to put everything behind a paid subscription. It's unfortunate, but that's the reality we live in. Everything as a service. Forums are relatively low cost as the data/bandwidth required is negligible when compared to audio/image/video. The maintenance related costs would be unavoidable. Setting up a forum is pretty basic these days. I reckon I could setup this forum in NodeBB over a weekend. Migrating data across is where it gets interesting. But starting from scratch would be a breeze. Interestingly, apparently forums in general have been seeing upticks in usage and new users. People have become so sick of the cesspit that is social media. They just want to have an honest discussion about a topic. Can't do that on social media platforms. Not sure why, but this forum is surprisingly well behaved. All forums have their fair share of trolls and assholes, but even they are kinda tame on here. I've seen way worse behaviour on other (non-football) forums.

I've seen way worse behaviour on other (non-football) forums. You're right. It's changed over time though to what it is now. It's pretty much self policed these days which is nice. Fuckheads that come in new and try and troll are regularly ignored which is the key I reckon. (I think these type of people thrive on burring others up and when they don't get a bite they move on. (Probably telling their mates that it's a bunch of softcock, snowflake, woke dickheads so don't bother.) I'm not surprised forums are having a resurgence. FB is hopeless and IG is full of the nastiest, most hateful people on the planet. The comments on any post by any woman are enough to make you despair. Whirpool, which is a massive forum, is highly moderated which is where I go if I can't find an answer to something else on the net. Lots and lots of high quality discussion over there.

Still in box at parents home. Loved 442 in England in 2007. Had them on the train and national express all the time. Still remember the interview with Scott Sinclair on loan at Plymouth while at Chelsea. How times change.

Podcasts have replaced our magazines and websites even. Podcasts for easy listening and resting the eyes. I like the Optus Football with Schwarzer. BBC Football Daily but it depends who is on. Suited and Booted but only when they have a serious guest on like Hill or King. Otherwise they're stuffing around too much. Socceroos official has had some poor audio quality and the player interviews can be low energy. Soccerwhos are trying their best and they have some good chats. Fox was good during Covid when Bosnisch told all his stories.

We still have podcasts now We have lost a great deal of football media in Aus. There is so little to read. We are going to bid farewell to our local Murdoch tabloid. The best thing about it was the extended network to other Murdoch agencies regarding football. The Age and SMH barely have any Aus football content anymore. SBS barely covers Aus football. Ditto the ABC.

This website does generate some revenue from agent-funded player puff-pieces e.g. the most recent few Birighitti articles trying to get him an A-League contract. Not sure how much revenue that generates though.

Can they be linked in the remaining sticky (topics of interest) along with osuassies, the youth thread and perhaps the nst thread since they get a lot of traffic? (Sometimes they slip back a few pages and 442 pages take a while to load for me for some reason)

It might need a new thread though because I doubt anyone but the OP can edit the existing thread anymore. I bet if someone put together a new one and it was good Bowden would sticky it.

Have to wonder how many people at FA actively monitor some of the discussion on here, its such a useful source of information regarding aussies abroad and general fan sentiment towards current domestic affairs. I mean, its free info for them... .

Wasn't a smoking gun but i did wonder...

What made 442 forums so successful was the fans. It was a proper place for engagement. We even created a fan led football show out of it. We had a commentary team.
Granted most of us who led those things have gone on to other careers and have not really found the time to be on here all the time.
When I look at the forums, I'm thrown off by the constant threads posted by the IS bot. If I post in a thread and then come back later to see the responses, but the thread has been pushed to the bottom of the page by the IS bot articles, I don't really want to bother. Forums are successful when there is genuine engagement and that engagement leads to something substantial. With outlets like Reddit and Discord, people probably get there fix on those platforms. This forum needs to come back to it's core. The way it does that is through a fan led process. We need to make this forum a valuable resource for fan engagement on Australian Football.
It needs a proper mod team to start so they can monitor and overlook the boards. Then you need to develop a clear vision for what the boards will be and what they will drive. Once you have that, then you can start to think about all the other little minutae.

The only thing I can see that's a problem is the bot articles. Do you want the mods (Bowden) to delete those? Do you think that would drive traffic back? Not having a crack. Just a genuine question.

Very sad if FTBL/forum is dying.
This is one of the few sites I'd log onto every day (sometimes multiple times) to keep my finger on the pulse of what's happening in Oz football. It leaves a massive gap...

I can start deleting the non-Australian Football article threads that appear in the AF subforum if people think that would help.

I'm possibly a minority here again - I scan all the bot articles every time I come here and that shows me some of the things that are happening in the football world. I like seeing them there and the variety of content suits me as the one place I start. It does not bother me that the threads I have been specifically following and contributing to get pushed further down the page because I am looking on a PC screen and it doesn't take long to find the ones that have had attention from other posters in the last couple of days. I can see it being an annoyance if you don't come on here at least every two days (roughly the time it takes to disappear off the front page if there has been no activity). I can see it being a problem if anyone does put effort into an informative article that people read without adding activity and it pushes back out of sight. The Sticky route is fine for things that have permanent interest but would add to the problem if we ended up getting 10-20 stickied threads pushing other recent activity back pages. For whoever mentioned forum pages loading slowly for them - it has been that way for me for years. Possibly due to the database getting larger all the time and the data queries having to hold a lot more information in their 'head' while it gets the pages in order. Something in the user settings that would let you limit the age of threads up front (only show me anything created in the last year for example) could make data retrieval faster but from what we have heard I doubt there is much 'future programming' going on at the moment and I have no idea if anyone is actually looking at the Query coding to find ways of keeping it efficient over time. An option to block users has been discussed many times but to find a different use for that function - if you could choose to block threads posted by a user you could block the robot if you didn't want to see all those articles pop up. Just a possible improvement/enhancement.
When I wear their colours, I am the club.

Im with RIMB, If the clickbait article heading strikes my fancy ill read the article (Usually disappointed btw) otherwise just ignore it.

Agree. These are genuine football articles posted on here. I don't have any problem with the ostensibly named 'bot articles' being posted from the Inside Sport football site.

+x+xWhat made 442 forums so successful was the fans. What do you wants mods to do that they're not doing already? The only thing I can see that's a problem is the bot articles. Do you want the mods (Bowden) to delete those? Do you think that would drive traffic back? Not having a crack. Just a genuine question. I'm not having a dig at Bowden. Him and I go way back. I have nothing but the utmost respect and time for Bowden. I was simply just giving my own view about the forums. I thought that was what was happening here, a roundtable about what makes the forums a great place. The Australian Football section should I think stick to Aus Football. An article about Neuer's international retirement is not relevant to the Aus Football thread. Create a hub where Australian fans can come and talk about the game - here and abroad - but keep the themes relevant. I also see RIMB's point too. Perhaps a redesign to seperate the articles from the genuine threads. The biggest challenge is going to be how we drive numbers to the forums and get them to engage

I'm happy enough with the Australian related football articles, although they still clutter the page and don't drive much discussion, but the non-Australia articles don't add to the content at all. It does drive better/on-topic content off the front page, which I think is a problem. I guess it depends what you want from the forum. I think it's really important to drive engagement and discussion. That tends to happen best with threads posters have posted themselves, because they're more interesting and the posters engaging in them have ownership of it. That change (removing FTBL articles) would help address that, but it does unfairly put a bigger burden on Bowden. Appreciating he's a volunteer and already does so much. It would be good for there to be some support for him. I hope Muz's mate he's emailing can help there maybe. The next bit is having a respectful and self-moderating culture. I think this place has that most of the time. It's actually really hard to build that and a big tick for the forum imo.

Deleting heaps of spam, is nobody's idea of fun, when they've joined a forum to to discuss specific issues about a sport/hobby - football in this case. I've been on a lot of moderating panels in the last few years. The bigger the Mod team, more hands make light work. Bowden has an onerous workload. Given the strong likelihood of this forum being closed down, I won't go into what other Mod panels have done to sustain Mod numbers elsewhere. At this stage I'd like to thank Bowden for the community service he has provided for this forum in his moderating capacity. Particularly lately, with so little support. Ditto - thanks to all the other Mods who have moderated on this forum.

It's more that the there is no active admin to add moderators that leaves the place vulnerable. I don't think there's an immediate risk the forum will go, but it'd be good to have a plan if it does.

Zimbos I don’t think Muz saw it you having a go at Bowden. We all know here be it long timers and newbies - I suspect everyone sees his great contribution value and manners here. Muz I take it was just asking what to bring to the table due to the forums current circumstances. Im no leader that can add much help in the workings of this place but a happy fellow forumer who’s open to anything you more in the know can come up with and put in my 2bobs worth if I can. Keep it going fellers for the point is how can we improve the site and grow it again.

One factor forum members need to consider is that the forum is generating little advertising compared to the past. The income generated would likely be minimal, and possibly lower than the cost to operate it.
The google ad asking for advertisers is often unfilled. The only 5 advertisers have been - a sports clothes ad, Health and Fitness for Women, Gut Health, Adobe and some Pre-Paid ad. Probably nowhere near enough?
There are costs associated with running the forum. Hence, there is a strong likelihood it may not be economically viable for people running a business to keep the forum operating.
My advice is to prepare for Inside Sport Forums to be closed down. If you want to continue to associate with specific members, you need to message them and arrange to stay in subsequent contact via FB Messenger, phone text or email.

There is a Telstra ad too. There is also an ad for Singapore as a tourist destination. 6-7 companies just may not be economically viable though.

Just say hi in the "say hi thread" and we can continue discussion here and only move there as a backup if 442 dies I really don't like joining online groups and personally prefer to keep my online presence/exposure minimal. I have bookmarked the link in case this forum does disappear but I won't be joining unless this forum does disappear. Good idea though. It gives everyone interested a chance to find a common place in future if they dig up our pitch and turn it into an office block.

I'll join Reddit and Roar if this closes down. 17 years of operation is a decent stint of time. I've been here off and on, since the beginning. The immediacy of the posts has been a highlight - as opposed to a Mod having to approve a post before it appears some time later - as exists on Roar.

It feels a bit traitorous doing this, but if this place disappears a ready made alternative is BigSoccer: https://www.bigsoccer.com/forums/australia.1067/It's pretty dead now but used to be good. If you like the message board format you could easily pick this place up and carry on there.

Thanks grazor and Quicky, Like RIMB I'm no SM junkie compared to many, I also like to keep a low online profile and the less is more approach. I really don't know how some of you keep up with so many SM chat groups etcetc I struggle. I've Bookmarked both links just to case where I can at least find MIA members from here IF the place suddenly disappears on us that will be sad.

+xI made a subreddit just in case https://www.reddit.com/r/442Australia/can everyone join? Just say hi in the "say hi thread" and we can continue discussion here and only move there as a backup if 442 dies I did consider how it would look if we took it off here. Would it be Reddit, discord, etc. How would it work and how would we moderate it. I feel like accessibility could really drive the engagement and if we are able to access it via our phones, perhaps people would be more engaged. In terms of revenue that others speak about, generally ads are driven by engagement so whilst we don't want this to become a cesspool of arguing and frustrations, we do need quantity along with quality. Perhaps there is a scope here to have a stable platform where people can engage and offer different fan led ideas to increase that. When the Matildas played in the Olympics, I didn't really find a place that I could go to and engage with others in the way I can on Reddit when there is a Rugby match or a Cricket event, or a European football match. Zimbos I don’t think Muz saw it you having a go at Bowden. We all know here be it long timers and newbies - I suspect everyone sees his great contribution value and manners here. Muz I take it was just asking what to bring to the table due to the forums current circumstances. Keep it going fellers for the point is how can we improve the site and grow it again. That's fair. I didn't take any umbrage to it. I think there are a lot of ideas out there and some of them are really valid and some are probably a little harder to reach. What I think we first need to decide is what we want from the forum or a place like this. How do we want to engage with it. If we want something similar with different areas for different topics like Aus Football, World Football, Extra time, then how do we get the people who own this forum to develop the space we want? What assurances can we give them? If they can't do we consider extraditing it to another platform or our run forum? Once we have a stable base, then we can start working on other ideas.

+x+xI made a subreddit just in case https://www.reddit.com/r/442Australia/can everyone join? Interesting points, Zimbo. My online presence for football is only that few mates offline are interested. However, that has changed a bit lately, with former teammates in youth teams, having a renewed interest galvanised by the Matildas. I've had more off line discussion about football in recent times. I've been able to get pepper shakers out to demonstrate changed tactics in person, to former teammates of many decades ago. Two other topics of interest, where I head to two forums for discussion, there is far less strident opinions proffered, or very respectful engagement. Also, with people who have quite a degree of insight offering advice to those who don't. It has been appreciated by those keen to acquire new info and knowledge. I've also noted on cricket forums, like football, more acrimonious discussion can occur when opinions differ.

Yeah, Warner is a cheating C*nt who should never have been picked again I've never understood the vilification of some sportspersons. At a members' cricket venue, one mother of a visiting player, who was friends with Mitch Marsh a few years back, and who had stayed at her place a lot when he was younger, said MM walked around acknowledging he was the most hated cricketer in Australia by fans on forums and social media. Dave Warner replaced MM. All MM did was do his best! He might have been given some favourable selection too - the public not being able to objectively appraise his value as team member in a team. In football scapegoats have been David Zdrillic, Brett Holman, Jade North and Danny Allsopp, at various times. Poor guys!

I've also noted on cricket forums, like football, more acrimonious discussion can occur when opinions differ. I think part of the problem is the FA. They have often stifled fan led programs or initiatives. There are still those who are strong NPL only and want nothing to do with the A-league. There was also a time where many were attacked for preferring European leagues over the A-league (I was one of them) and I can see why that would put people off. In saying that, there hasn't been anything given to the fans to engage in it. Everything that has been offered has generally been very controlled and moderated. Unless you know people, you don't get in. Unless you tow a line, you don't get a change. There are some podcasts and social media people who do things, but it doesn't really engage the wider audience. The forums are a bit more raw and honest which is great, and it means that we can also engage in not just football, but with each other in other interests.

Personally I prefer Discord than Reddit if it moves away from here. Can easily dissect the channels and threads and allows for more instant discussion.
Reddit is good too, but I don't think it will offer the same level of ease of use for people interested. I wonder if it could work in tandem like some places do.

I think Grazor's idea is just to have a place that we can be to decide what to do next if it comes to it - not necessarily that Reddit will be the forum location.

Yeah exactly so if it gets suddenly cut off here there is a place to announce the new place

Every now and again have a look at the bottom of the front Forum page. It showed 17 Active, 1 Member (me), 16 Guests when I looked earlier. It often shows a lot of guests but few members on. So far from the poll you are looking pretty close (or should that say you are looking pretty a long way off?) with your 20ish.

I'm only fairly new to the forum and it is such a hidden resource for staying up to date with all things Australian football. Hearing that it could just vanish is shithouse. I personally do love something about the fact that forums are housed on a website rather than a platform or app. How many active members are there? Would a sort of Discord channel situation potentially work?

What about running a special event on the forum. Once a week (not sure when the most popular time is maybe just Monday nights 8pm-10pm?) we can round up as many posters as possible to be online and try create a bit of a routine? Just sticky a new thread with the target time so that people know it's on? The best things about this forum is: - Everyone here is a football fan and only here to talk about football
- Engaging in real time discussion
- Seeing other posters online the same time as you
I think building a routine around a peak posting time could maximise the above enjoyable factors and maybe encourage people to return or join.

BigFooty in general or the Association Football subforum on BigFooty? Or BigSoccer? BigFooty is very busy. The Association Football subforum is busier than here for different topics though. Aussies Abroad content is lightyears ahead here. The BigSoccer Australian Subforum has one or two active posters and is essentially dead. But still operating.

I just had a look at the other forums and sports on insidesport (I didn't know they were there, thought this was a football only forum haha). 99% of the other forums are spam, like a ghost town. Football seems to be the most active here?

Sadly our media companies are so locked into their own sports Football coverage is very poor. Another reason this site is so important

Since the posts on the FTBL home page seem to have dried up is this a sign of the site on it's last legs?
As a newbie to the forum I'd be devastated if it just disappeared and I didn't know where everyone up and left to. Should there be a succession plan?

Speaking of the forum, I've been around football forums for around 20 years now. The decline in discussions has been massive. I've seen a few big ones close down, such as SoccerPulse. I wonder if Twitter has made it worse.

+xSpeaking of the forum, I've been around football forums for around 20 years now. The decline in discussions has been massive. I've seen a few big ones close down, such as SoccerPulse. I wonder if Twitter has made it worse. I reckon there's a direct correlation between forums declining and the rise of Facebook.

I wonder if Twitter has made it worse. I reckon there's a direct correlation between forums declining and the rise of Facebook. This is sheer speculation, but I find, talking to younger football fans, that many of them havent watched a full match in ages... Many gorge on mini matches and 3 min highlight packages or even as small as tiktok 30 second "clips" I was having age old, eternal "old man yelling at clouds" debate with a young cousin about old vs new players. Apparently, according to this 17 year old Arsenal fan, Haaverts and Saka are miles ahead of Henry in every conceivable metric??? 3 hours later and 2 full replays of matches the comment was..... "the highlights only show the good bits". hahahahahahahahahahah

Hey Bowden - do you have the authority to delete those Thai betting users? Assuming you do, can you also automatically delete anything they post? It would make sense for a forum to be able to simply get rid of a spam user and remove any reference they posted easier than it was for them to post it in the first place. Just thinking...

Wonder if it is possoble to autodelete any post with thai characters When we see blocked accounts their posts are gone too as far as I recall. I suspect that had to be done manually one by one maybe - surely it would not be hard to remove all trace of a bad user in a database sense...Delete all Where username or thread starter = <name>... sort of thing. From a forum owners perspective linking that to the banned function would be a simple coding step. Just putting ideas up if the owners are reading this.

I know of forums with this functionality. It's a very quick clean up. Everthing just disappears. But because it's such a nuclear option it's usually an admin permission, rather than regular mod (which usually takes time to escalate and action). My understanding is the admin went awol and no-one has replaced them.

The only tools I have are all manual. Even with the spam posts I can only delete them one-by-one.

I think this forum would be fine with a bit more mod coverage. Modding is volunteer work and you can't expect Bowden to do it all. It just needs a regular who's happy to delete spam threads.
