What drew me back to paying to watch football again is the non-ethnic teams concept of the A-League, which has succeeded in uniting the tribes and is setting attendance records all over the country. The reason that I, along with thousands of other Sydney football fans, don't attend any State League games is the fact the old regime still exists there, with most teams catering only for their restricted ethnic base, and it is really sad. We need something similar to the A-League revolution right across the lower leagues and the sooner the better.

If the FFA are serious in revamping the structure across all levels of the game and setting some sort of development structure, then they have to go in and take control of all the state leagues and have some sort of uniformity. At the moment they are governing themselves with no clear direction.
I am a bit apprehensive though to take away and destroy the history that these clubs have though. Ok, it went to shit at the end there, but don't forget, these clubs are the roots of where this sport came from in this country. Blah blah ethnic blah blah, but the fact of the matter is this: if it werent for the "ethnics" this sport probably wouldnt even be here in this country.
By destroying the "ethnic" origins of these clubs, you are destroying a part of Australian culture history imo.
But getting back to the point, yes a revamping and an overall governing body needs to be established for the various state leagues.

Hopefully we all agree on one thing: Only the advancement and progress of football in this country matters. Whatever it takes.
I followed the old NSL and watched a lot of games. People predicted the A-League would fall over after 1 year without the traditional clubs like Olympic, Sydney United, South Melbourne etc. taking part.
We know now it worked!!! It's sad when history and tradition create an emotional factor that clouds clear thinking when making decisions for a better future.
I feel for the old clubs. Because I followed one myself for years. But I feel more for Australian football. And deep in our hearts we all know now, thanks to the A-League revolution, which is the right way for the game to prosper. And the right way is for the State Leagues to follow suit.

cro69 don't be offended by my comments. The reason I typed "ethnics" in quotations was because that is how they are always referred. I was just using the language that people like to use when they refer to the old NSL.
I for one, have European blood in me also. And in my post I did point out that if it wasnt for these clubs, football wouldnt even be in this country.

It will take the State Federations getting the clubs to change, you can't go about forcing clubs out or forcing changes, but to get them to see that promoting the game to all people is more important, and that the future is always more important than the past.

That's why there is talk of the FFA stepping in and taking control. I dont think its a matter of forcing clubs out, but more along the lines of getting a clear direction and objective for these State Federations and their members. At the moment they are just plodding along doing their own thing with no real long term goals. If the FFA do step in and take control then hopefully we see those goals outlined and achieved over time.

We all agree and have our hearts in the right place. History is important and should never be lost, but should never interfere with the future. We need something similar to the A-League revolution right across the Australian football landscape, and when that is achieved, we should formulate ways and means of recognising the past with events rather than soccer clubs' names.

I really think that the whole ethnic aspect in Australian Football needs to be seriously looked at and studied in depth - Maybe Market Research initiated by the FFA and state federations to understand the problem? so that the best solution can be found.
I mean, we live in a multi cultural society, most of us eat exotic food and have friends of different nationalities. Taking this into consideration, what is it about going to matches involving 'ethnic' teams that keeps people away?

you forgot Raul, Ramos, Xavi... yea they count because theyve been brought through the youth system since they were really young and look at how they have turned out and still heaps to improve. i couldve named them and gone on forever so just shows how good that system is ey

It does indeed...because i was the one whom pointed it out ;) :P
But there's no realy way of seeing how much money has been poured into that system over the years, and with th elikes of BArcelona and Ream Madrid, you know that would be summountable.

A lot of people i have spoken to have said they have no interest in state leagues with or without ethnic clubs, if we start from scratch and introduce new clubs into the state leagues across the country who will realistically follow them? lets go even further then that but how long would it take these clubs to set up youth sides and junior sides? when it comes to player development nothing will ever come close to the ethnic clubs, you see so many players now making the jump from sydney united, Marconi, South Melbourne, Melbourne knights etc into the A league, to just get rid of these clubs is far to risky as far as player development is concerned, they may not be able to gather mainstream support but they can sure as hell produce the next Viduka, its more then just getting rid of these clubs, they actually still play an important role in the progress of the game in this country.

Nobody said anything about starting from scratch, Merely to use the state league teams as feeder clubs for the A-League teams. like they do in spain.

Yeah, but the sydney supporters would ague that to their death, even though they know it's right.

There's a thread floating around here with the actual numbers, and the VPL does indeed have more 'representatives' in the A-League than any other state.
