It's been about four years since I've played competitive football and was at my peak fitness level, but now that I'm moving into a town with a side again - I'm keen to get back in the proverbial saddle and see if my years of watching the game have in any way translated to a better understanding of it.

My dilemma, of course, is that I've put on about 15kgs in the intervening years and I don't think I'm quite up to playing at the level I did in my heyday. Does anyone have any fitness tips for somebody not quite ready to launch into 45 minute runs and doesn't have access to a gym?

I seem to remember Andre Gumprecht had quite a good article in Four-Four-Two about it back in January or February - but I've somehow managed to lose that particular issue.

So, any tips? :-k

ok then...there's always the rediculous suggestion of anorexia, you'll lose weight, but your stamina will probably stay about the same.

choose your diet carefully.

start going for long walks, youuf body will start to the exercise and it will help you get back into enough shape to start jogging (if your knees can withstand it)

..and...sex, lost of sex...it's actually a good cardiovascular workout, with the tension & contraction of muscles etc...

Haha, I don't think my knees are going to give out on my anytime soon. I'm only 23 :-P

But I will take you up on the other advice. Had planned to go on a diet as soon as I moved into my new place, as I'll have the time and money to better manage things on that front. Might be difficult rustling up a partner for your last suggestion - Glen Innes is known for two things: senior citizens and teenage mothers, neither of which hold a great deal of appeal for me. :-p

We've got three teams playing at senior level (the Highlanders). The top squad have won the local competition (involving sides from Armidale, Guyra, Inverell) a few times - but I'd be aiming to start at the bottom with some casual games for the third string side before I pushed back towards the top level.

Start with diet, cut down on the drink (alcohol), fast food, sugar, bread, soft drink. Drink green tea, fruit and vegetables, lean meat, lots of water. Lots of running just build it up slowly, grab a mate and kick the ball around the park. When you have built your fitness level up do some short sharp runs.

I lost 9kg from Xmas day to the start of the season second week of April this year, I did have two sessions of beer drinking during that time and junk food during that time.

My experience hope it helps, Good Luck.

Mate - I went up by about 30kgs since I last played and I instead used the extra weight as part of my gameplan. I play up front and its great having some payback on defenders who used to knock me around when I was only 60kg!!!

Although the hard ground (drought) and extra weight does cause some extra strain on the knees, you'll soon adapt.

This season (my second since returning) has seen me regain my pace to what it was years ago (which was one of my strengths) so it can prove quite beneficial being 85kg and running at full pace towards Defences as they don't expect a guy of my size to move at that rate.

In summary, get used to your 'larger' body and identify the strengths it now provides.

Good to hear your back amongst it. :)

I'm at about 98kg at the moment, so I'd like to drop 10kgs or so before I'm at a weight more fitting of my height. Eating healthier and walking about 4kms a day at the moment, so hopefully I'll start seeing some changes soon.

I got a little slack exercise this past week. It's raining or sleeting every day here, and struggling to push 5 degrees. Hopefully I'll be able to make better progress this week.

I'm 23, and started playing for the first time ever this year(In January). I was 108kg when I started.

I've lost 12kg so far, simply by going to training three nights a week in the pre-season, and then twice a week during the season.

My goal is to lose around another 10kg during the off-season so that I'm actually properly fit and a decent size.
I haven't gone to the gym, and I haven't really done anything outside of training with the club.

It's well and good to say "use the extra weight", but in my case, I need fitness more, as I'm not as good at holding the ball up as someone with experience from their youth.

My goal is to now go to the gym, and get a but of muscle tone and keep up the cardio. Maybe play some futsal?

My advice would be, just start, the longer you put it off the longer it'll take.

Futsal might be a good idea, but talk to Little Mozart or Futsal Fanatic about that one.

Building up muscle tone isn't the best idea if you're looking to LOSE weight, dont forget that muscle weighs more than fat.
Good luck to all of you starting out, i wish i could get back into it myself.

TO get fit start jogging every 2nd night for 40 odds mins... also buy yourself a bench.. $150 odd bucks... also start eating correctly and drink lots of water during the day.
