Ray Gatt Article - The Australian

" FORGOTTEN defender Michael Beauchamp is expected to be brought in from the cold today when Socceroos boss Pim Verbeek names his preliminary squad for the World Cup finals in South Africa next month.

The former Central Coast Mariners stopper will be included in a provisional 27-man squad as Verbeek weighs up his options in the troublesome defensive position.

Beauchamp has been out of sight and out of mind since moving to the United Arab Emirates to play with Al-Jazira after injuries played a part in him making just 12 appearances for Danish club Aalborg in the 2008-09 season.

A tall, solidly built centre-back or right-back, he has been capped 19 times for the Socceroos and is now at least playing regularly with Al-Jazira.

It is understood he is regarded as a serious defensive option in light of Australia's problems at the back.

While Lucas Neill and Craig Moore are considered certainties to be in the first XI in South Africa, the Socceroos are short on cover because of injuries and lack of form."

Oh no, here I was thinking & praying that Pim is only taking Moore as a back up, in case Lucas Neill gets injured & he won't play unless Lucas gets injured.
But with Beauchamp's inclusion in the squad the terrifying thought just occurred to me that Pim is planning to play Moore WITH Lucas in the same team, at centre back, ( slow Lucas & slower Moore ).
Meaning Beauchamp is going as a back up centre back to either Moore or Lucas.

God help us, is that the best we can do?

Pim Verbeek to bring Michael Beauchamp in from the cold for Socceroos

FORGOTTEN defender Michael Beauchamp is expected to be brought in from the cold today when Socceroos boss Pim Verbeek names his preliminary squad for the World Cup finals in South Africa next month.

While Lucas Neill and Craig Moore are considered certainties to be in the first XI in South Africa, the Socceroos are short on cover because of injuries and lack of form. The loss of Leeds United's Patrick Kisnorbo with a season ending knee injury three weeks ago threw the Australians in to panic mode.

One of only two A-League players, Beauchamp was part of the Socceroos squad at the 2006 World Cup finals in Germany, but did not play a match.

Mark Milligan, who was with Sydney FC at the time, was the other Australian-based player in the squad. He did not feature in any of the games at the World Cup.

Now playing in Japan, Milligan, a central defender, right-back or defensive midfielder, is also in the running for selection for South Africa as is Sydney FC's Simon Colosimo.

Meanwhile, concerns over Harry Kewell's injury means diminutive striker Scott McDonald is almost certainly guaranteed a spot in the squad.

Kewell says he will be fit for the finals and will be named in the squad, but it means Verbeek will have to slot in an extra striker as a precautionary measure.

McDonald was going to be named in the 27-man list, but is now likely to be included in the final 23-man squad that has to be named by June 1.

Despite a wonderful career with Celtic in which he was a prolific scorer and now getting on the scoring list with English club Middlesbrough, the much maligned McDonald has yet to score a goal for the Socceroos.

That lack of goals on the international stage, his lack of height and perceived lack of speed has earned him harsh but unwarranted criticism.

The truth is that he has often been forced to operate as a lone striker with the national team - a role that does not suit him. McDonald is much better playing with another striker next to him.

McDonald, Kewell, Josh Kennedy and Nikita Rukavytsya should be named as the Socceroos strikers.

I am actually not that surprised that North is in the frame. He has been doing well since moving to Norway. (having said that I still don't think he will make the final 23). And beauchamp?? He was in better form 4 years ago when Guus called him up. Now he has no chance. He should actually make the horror book to show young players how a bad move can stifle your development

Beauchamp?? I have rarely felt more terrified or helpless than watching the national team with Beauchamp as our last man, with the ball at his feet.
Epic fail!

Strange decision. With Carney, Chippers, Neill, Moore, Wilkshire and Williams as near certain selections..... I would've favoured Milligan and Bosnar to complete the defense. I would've also then put Coyne, Spiranovic and Lowry as the outsiders ahead of North or Beauchamp.

Australia coach Pim Verbeek is poised to pick the tried and tested duo of Michael Beauchamp and Jade North when he announces his provisional squad for the 2010 World Cup on Tuesday morning.

TWG understands that despite limited playing time this season for 29-year-old Beauchamp, with UAE club Al-Jazira, and 28-year-old North, at Norwegian side Tromso, they are expected to be among the 30 players named by Verbeek in Sydney.

Skipper Lucas Neill, veteran centre-back Craig Moore, right-back Luke Wilkshire and left-back Scott Chipperfield appear certain starters against Germany in Durban next month, barring injuries, leaving a handful of squad berths open.

A-League star Simon Colosimo, Japan-based Mark Milligan and English lower league youngster Shane Lowry are tipped to be chosen by Verbeek in his extended group.

This would leave no room for Asian-based trio Eddy Bosnar, Sasa Ognenovski and Matthew Spiranovic.
