Verbeek flogging lame horse by persisting with Kewell for World Cup

May 15, 2010

What is the obsession Pim Verbeek has with an injured Harry Kewell? Countries such as Brazil have dropped injured players in favour of those who are fully fit, yet Pim persists with Kewell. Harry should do the right thing and withdraw from the Socceroos' World Cup squad. He need look no further than Fulham striker Bobby Zamora, who opted to go to the operating table so that he is fully fit to play football next season instead of accepting an offer to join the England squad.

Goodbye Pim Verbeek, Australian soccer could only be pleased with his departure. Yes, he has got us to the World Cup, however he has not come even close to embracing the game in this country, especially the A-League. His ongoing commentary on the status and quality of the A-League and its participants has slowed the league's progression. It's true that Verbeek, like most coaches, is a gun for hire but my advice to the FFA in making its next appointment is to employ a coach who wants to meld and support the soccer competitions in this country and not detract from them.

If your putting a poll, put a question mark in the title or else it seems your advocating a position

Top three players in the squad are Schwartzer, Cahill and Kewell

A half fit Kewell is probably still our best option. Went OK in 2006 unfit.

NO YOU STUPID JOURNALIST. If he had paid any attention to anything besides his own douche baggery he would know that Harry is expected to be fully fit by the USA game.

I ticked 'nup' because it is a poorly written and considered article. That said, it is a big risk to take Harry into this tournament given his lack of game time and the likelihood he will break down in his first appearance.

Now, of course I hope like shit he doesn't break down, but I have been wondering lately whether we'd be better of taking a younger bloke who, while clearly not as skilled, will be more likely to stay fit and may just pull out a few surpirse performances as well. For example, Ruka, Vidosic and Oar, and all three are unlikely to make the squad with Harry, and Bresc as well, taking up spots despite very dark clouds over their fitness.

They can afford too, theyve got plenty of great players. We dont, Kewell is one of our best.

i'd argue the other way. his honesty is what the a-league needs. we shouldnt be fooled into thinking the comp is good by whoever the australia coach is. he should tell us the truth, so we can try and improve.
