England will never win the world cup again. They are a tribal bunch of oafs who have been squabbling amongst themselves for over a millennium. This squabbling eventually resulted in the creation of the game of football. This in turn allowed them to continue their warfare and still have time to go to the pub (and the chippie afterwards).

Now don't get me wrong I have a very soft spot for the UK, some of my ancestors came from there (not by their own choice though). But really ... they can't stop fighting each other long enough to put together a 'team' that can win a tournament.

So while they might have a good team on paper, that bit of paper would probably be put to better use wrapping up a bag of chips.

What do you think about the FourFourTwo blog This Is England?
Let me get this straight: despite what the bookies say, I believe England have very little chance of winning the World Cup.
First of all, history is completely against them. No European team has ever...

Have your say.

Everyone's entitled to their opinion without having a gender stereotype thrown at them....

Furthermore, there are quite a lot of pundits who see Uruguay as a bit of a dark horse in this World Cup

Uruguay?... and your basing Argentina on Messi, when you have a look at whose the gaffer i think you'll have a second look really... England have arguably the most experienced and best manager at the tournament in Fabio (you don't see Inter Milan falling over themselves to get Pim do you?)... you say that no European has won outside Europe so that detests england's chances but Spain's got a right shot... did you see there dodgey display against Saudi Arabia where they won 3-2 with a stoppage time winner... Bahrain beat Saudi Arabia, now come on

if you look at it England should do well against European opposition (bar the Germans) a match against Serbia or Ghana would probably be welcome, Australia not so much but only on the historical grounds not because we are seen as a major threat... and if they get through the Round of 16, they're most likely opponent will be France? an aged, under-performing, mutinous France

Semi-Final is the main goal and they'll achieve that under Capello

"They've got an experienced and match-fit defence, most of whom have had pretty good seasons. Marshalled by newly elected captain Rio Ferdinand, they'll be a force to be reckoned with."

I'm sorry but is that for real? Rio has had problems all season and played all of what 19 games. Terry went to shit after the whole shagging his mate's GF scandal, Bridge has left, King is a liability with his injuries, Cole has been out for the better part of the season and Carragher is, well, just not that good.

It said that most have had pretty good seasons which isn't far from the truth. The only one in there that you can say has a had a truly shit season is Ferdinand. Terry had an OK season. Cole for when he was playing was the best LB in the league. Glen Johnson had a good first season with Liverpool. varragher while not being brilliant wasn't shit. Ledley King although being a liability had a brilliant second half to the season with Spurs.

Cole was fucking boss this season when he was fit... scored four goals from left back when previously he had scored two in his last four seasons... Rio if he gets fit will be fine... Terry was the captain of the champions... Carragher admittedly was average but he hardly had any help... Glen Johnson has a very good season and his defensive capabilities are too focused on when you compare him to other fullbacks at the world cup... King gets a lot of shit for his injuries, but he's a top defender when fit, which he has been of late... the guy was a dead cert to start in 06 before injury in the later half of the season

Cole was top quality for the first half of the season before his injury and started to look on his way back to form towards the end, but the reality is that he has missed a lot of football and is hardly coming into the cup in top form. Johnson is another that had a good start to the season but wasn't as good following injury, the reality with him though is that while he is decent at going forward he is suspect as a defender. Always has been.

Terry may have been captain of the Champions but he was the reason they dropped their lead in the first place and had United not slipped up against Blackburn than he would of been captain of the team that dropped the lead.

King is a great defender and it is a real shame that he has these chronic problems with his knees as he could really be up their with the best. Truth be told though he is a liability no matter what way you look at it. He can't even train FFS.

England have some great players in defence no doubt, but it certainly isn't as rosy as made out, I mean Carragher offered to come back into the squad due to the problems they were having. Saying that if everyone is fit and Rio can find his form then they will be a force to be reckoned with at the back.

Nice article Arabella (oh and 'SILENCE' Zarathustra.....good idea mate, silence!).

I'm a Pom by birth, but I have been here for over half my life now and I love both countries, so if England face Australia in the last 16, please forward my calls to the Tibetan Monastery that I'll be in till it's all over.........

In 2006 I found myself recording the England games, but actually getting up to watch the Australian ones. This is probably due to the same reasons that a Football writer in The UK's Daily Mirror wrote during the 2006 tournament "I have just watched Australia play Croatia and all I can say is, if England played with the same heart and passion as they did, we'd win the World Cup".

English fans saying "we have a real chance this time" has almost become a tradition, sadly, 'Mike Bassett England Manager' wasn't the comedy fiction movie that most people took it as.................

Pretty sure they'll at least make the quarters. Once you're there, there's not a lot between the teams that make it that far, so they are as much a chance as anyone. I really hope Australia get to play them, it could be great for the sport here.

I'm sorry, but this article is just ridiculous.

Your argument is that England won't win the World Cup because no team from europe has won it, and then go on to say that Spain could do just that.

Then you say that England can't win because they haven't made it past the quarter finals in your lifetime...but then, neither have Spain or Uruguay and Argentina have done it once in 20 years.

I love it how people judge teams based on friendlies where managers try out unseen formations or players and try to get fitness while avoiding injuries. By that logic NZ will be a shoe in for the World Cup

People forget about the experience in the ranks and Capello as manager. In the qualifiers the England team raised their game and performed when it counted and qualified with ease

Maybe not going to win but should have enough to get to the final stages of the competition

It is interesting that Socceroos fans would say that, "again" as if it is easy to win or come close to winning the world cup, when the Socceroos could barely qualify for the finals let alone come close to winning the tournament before making the switch to the safer passage to the Cup finals :-k

At least with the English football set up football is the number one sport and will naturally have youngsters and the many footballing facilities to produce players and one of the best European Leagues. With that in place any country can build a rosy future for themselves.

What isn't great would be having football under several sports in the pecking order and the lack of top quality footballing academies and a well recognised league (as is the situation now in Australia)

:-k

Get a sense of humour Liverpool. We know we are way down the pecking order. My comments are more about the tribal small mentality of Poms than anything else.

They have arguably have one of the best leagues in the world. Surely given that their national players must get some of the best match experience. Combined with their huge emphasis on the game, facilities and coaching, one would assume that they would do better than they do. I'm just suggesting that they have more interest in their individual EPL teams than the national team.

Isnt that the point mate? Winning should be what is expected from a team with this much talent. not just reaching the latter stages.

Yeah and the mind boggles as to what we will be capable of when these situations improve.

That's an interesting point. Your right, English football is the number one sport in the country, has top footballing facilities and academies and is one of the best leagues in the world.

However it is widely recognised both in England and outside of England that they have serious problems producing young players, so that point about naturally having youngsters and producing players doesn't ring true. Sure they produce some but the FA and the Football community in general are trying to get to the bottom of the problem as to why England is producing so few young talents with real technical ability as compared to what it should be and in relation to the other top european and south american natiions.

At the end the day the top league is made up of a large number of players from countries other than England.
