It's quite simple Germany to pump those cheating Ghanian black stars 3-0 and we beat those dirty Serbs 2-0. We go to 3 goals scored, 5 against, Ghana goes to 2 goals scored 4 against and voila we go through on goals scored!!!! (we'd be on 4 points, ghana would be on 4, germany on 6 and the serbs on 3).

Or, Ghana can do the unthinkable, beat the Germans and we beat the Serbs to go through in second spot on 4 points.

Have faith boys.

Bad news is that both games will be played simultaneously next week.

Good news is that the Serbs will also need to play for a win, so whoever gets that first goal might expose the other team for the rest of the game.

The Serbs are diffuclt to peg back when they get a lead, by the same token I can see them falling apart if they go behind under pressure.

3-0 and 2-0 results arent the craziest results to happen. we need luck, but i think we could do it. after all, it would be about time that luck came our way.

cross your fingers guys. one thing is for sure - its going to be a cracker of a game on wednesday!

But if we do claw back the five goal difference, aren't we then only just level on points and level on goal difference with Ghana, so what happens then?

There have been red card issued in EVERY group D matches so far. If this trend continues, I hope Serbia and Ghana will get early red cards and Ghana to lose 5-0 against Germany (which is very likely)

I can't really see Ghana winning against Germany (even without Klose) but then this is an African World Cup and Ghana seems to be getting favours from refs, Ghana may squeeze a penalty (AGAIN) against Germany

p.s If only PV started yesterday's formation against Germany to begin with...

Socceroos survival guide

Paul Gough in Rustenburg

Here are the scenarios for Australian qualification for the second round of the 2010 World Cup following the Socceroos 1-1 draw with Ghana.

That result left Ghana on top of the group after two matches on four points with Germany in second spot on three points ahead of Serbia on goal difference with the Serbs also on three points while Australia is in last spot with one point.

But the Socceroos' hopes of finishing in the top two in the group and reaching the knockout stages are not over although the situation is no longer entirely within their own control.

To make it through to the next round Australia MUST BEAT Serbia.

Any other result will mean automatic elimination from the competition.

But unfortunately it is not that simple as qualification also depends on the result of the Germany-Ghana clash, which will be played at the same time as Australia's match with Serbia in Nelspruit on Wednesday night (Thursday morning Australian time).

There are three scenarios which could all result in Australia finishing second in the group with top spot in Group D now officially out of reach and they all depend on the Socceroos first beating Serbia.

These are in order of preference for the Socceroos.

*If Ghana beats Germany then Australia only has to beat Serbia to make it through to the round of 16 as the Socceroos would then finish on four points compared to just three for Germany and Serbia.

*If Germany beats Ghana then Australia and Ghana would finish equal second on four points and it would come down to goal difference. But Australia would have to make up a total of FIVE GOALS to progress given Ghana's goal difference currently stands at plus one while Australia's is negative four. So if Ghana loses 1-0, Australia has to win 4-0 but if Ghana loses say 3-0, the Socceroos then only have to win 2-0.

*And the worst scenario is if Ghana and Germany draw. In that case Australia would finish level in second place on four points with Germany but would have to make up a total of SEVEN GOALS to progress with Germany's goal difference currently plus three compared to Australia's negative four following Germany's 4-0 win over Australia in the opening game. But given Germany's goal difference would remain at plus three by drawing with Ghana then Australia would have to beat Serbia by at least seven goals to qualify.

Please just win the game against Serbia. Forget about goal difference. If we were going to qualify, we needed to win last night.

Knowing our luck we will win 7-0, but then the Germany v Ghana game will be a 4-4 draw and Germany will go through on goals scored.

If Australia don't make it through, I just hope that Ghana don't, as they really haven't earned it (I am of course willing to let them through if it means we get in too though! :)).

The Germans will be fired up after their loss to Serbia. They wont want to finish second. The media will have torn them a new one after that game.

Germany has been very impressive. Even with one man down against Serbia they still outplayed them, dominated play and created genuine chances throughout the game. Ghana failed to make any use their one man advantage against us and looked average against Serbia. Furthermore this is not a dead-rubber for Germany, they need to win just as much as all the other teams. A very big German victory is certainly on the cards, we may only need to beat Serbia 1 or 2 nil. Given the Serbs average performances lately and the imminent return of Tim Cahill I think a 1 or 2 nil win is well within our means.

Every game in this group has had red cards, group D = group of red cards. If Serbia cop another one early we could maybe bang in a couple.

And I think it'll be a small miracle if Ghana get the win, they've only scored from the spot and couldn't break down Australia when we had 9 players plus Craig Moore. I'll have to dig my rosary beads out...

Fact: all of Ghana's goals have been penalties, both from hand balls.
Fact: every other team in Group D has had a red card, 2 out of 4 of the red cards were against Ghana.
Fact: in both games Ghana has played their opposition has gotten a red card.
Fact: Ghana should have had a red card last night.

Ghana are definitely doing it hard this world cup...

Germany will beat Ghana and I expect by at least 2 goals. No way Ghana will score unless the ref gives them another penalty.

lol, you people are funny.. sorry to spoil the party but australia hasnt got a chance against the serbs... they just dont have the quality to battle with them in attack, i cant see any of the ozzies getting past vidic and ivanovic..plus there is no one on the flanks taking care of krasic and jovanovic, australia will get ripped to shreds down the flank and germanies tallest defender was still to short for zigic, the final score will read something like this.... serbia 3 def australia 0 sorry boys thats just how sour it is...

It gets even more complicated that this article outlines. See http://www.fifa.com/mm/document/tournament/competition/56/42/69/fifawcsouthafrica2010inhalt_e.pdf
If Germany beats Ghana 4-0 and we beat Serbia 1-0 then as far as I can work out FIFA draws us out of a hat to see who goes through.

No hat. There is a new rule for deciding the winner.

They way I understand it, under your scenario Ghana and Australia will be on the same points and the same number of goals scored and conceded, in which case and because Ghana and Australia are on different stadiums, the two grounds will be linked by video link and Ghana and Australia will take at least 5 alternate shots, one at a time, towards an empty goal from the halfway line, until there's a winner. I think the coach and assistant coach are allowed to have a go first. :^o

You don't have to get past Vidic. Just lob the ball above his head and wait.
