Former Celtic striker trialling with Jets

The Hunter Ports Newcastle Jets are trialling former Scottish international striker Mark Burchill.

Burchill has paid his own way to Australia to take part in a week-long trial with the Jets.

The 31-year-old striker represented Scotland six times between 1999 and 2000 and his previous Clubs include Celtic, Brimingham City and Portsmouth.

He most recently played for INSEE Police United FC in the Thailand Premier League under former Adelaide United assistant coach Phil Stubbins.

Burchill said he would be looking to put his best foot forward during his time in Newcastle.

“I’ve been a professional footballer now for 12 or 13 years, nothing really fazes me,” he said.

“I’m confident in my ability otherwise I wouldn’t be here giving it a shot.”

Burchill said the trial also provided him with an opportunity to take a closer look at Australia’s football culture.

“I’ve never been to Australia before and I don’t really know the football apart from what I’ve seen from afar,” he said.

“It’s good to come here and have a look at what it is like and I’m looking forward to the week to see how it goes.”

Stating the obvious I know, but GVE really needs to get this #9 completely spot on. Hes built such a great young squad, but that could mean 3/5 of sweet fuck all if he doesnt get a deadly finisher in front of goal.

Spot on! If we don't get a clinical finisher, we'll end up doing a shitload of lovely build-up play but then missing the target and we'll finish mid-table. We need a deadly striker who can bag 12 or 13 goals himself, that way with griffo, brown, etc chipping in with their tallies we'll finish top 4 and be a real threat come finals.

Got adrenaline to burn?

Thursday, 26 July 2012 12:45 PM

The Newcastle Jets are launching the “Adrenaline Dance Initiative” and “Vocal Adrenaline” for performers to be part of the Newcastle Jets match day entertainment for the 2012/2013 season.

The initiative aims to involve young, talented, and dynamic dancers to be part of the match day action at Hunter Stadium this season. In addition, the team will perform at Jets community events and fan days, as well as promotional and flash mob appearances throughout the season.

The squad will comprise of Juniors (aged 5-8) Intermediates (9-12) Seniors (13-16) and advanced dancers (16-18).

The initiative also launches “Vocal Adrenaline” – a performance group comprising of singers aged 8-18 from around the Hunter that will perform with the Adrenaline dancers at home games.

The Initiative manager, Louise Wilkinson says it's all about the involvement of the community and what better place to start than with the talented kids of the Hunter.

“This region has long been regarded as a breeding ground for young talent and I'm ecstatic that the Jets have provided the opportunity for our kids to perform regularly to large audiences as part of match day.”

Weekly rehearsals will be held in two locations- Newcastle and Maitland to create a truly “regional” squad.

“This is about getting kids off the computer and being involved. Its about representing their region and their national football team- and having a ball while doing it. There is just so much energy when the kids burst out of the tunnel to perform on game day. Its a real buzz.”

“We are encouraging all dancers and singers from around the Hunter to attend our Audition Workshop on Tuesday, August 21 at Hunter Stadium. Whether you are trained in jazz, cheer, breakdance or hip hop, we want to hear from you.”

To learn more about being part of Adrenaline Dance Initiative CLICK HERE to download a registration pack, fill out the forms and bring them along to Hunter Stadium on Tuesday 21st August at 4pm.

To learn more about being part of Vocal Adrenaline CLICK HERE to download a registration pack, fill out the forms and bring them along to Hunter Stadium on Tuesday 21st August at 4pm.

Jets youth in tight battle at the top

Friday, 27 July 2012 2:01 PM

The Newcastle Jets youth team will look to move to the top of the NBN State League ladder when they take on Edgeworth Eagles at Jack McLaughlin Oval on Sunday afternoon.

The Jets are caught in a four-way battle for the minor-premiership with three rounds of the competition remaining.

Hamilton Olympic are currently in first place on 33 points, with the Jets and Broadmeadow Magic next in line on 32 points. Charlestown City are in fourth place on 31 points.

Jets coach Clayton Zane said the run into the finals would prove to be an interesting challenge for the young Jets.

“Obviously we’re trying to play our own brand of football, but we want to finish at the top of the table as well,” he said.

“If we don’t have a good finish to the season, we’ll only just scrape into the finals and we want to be going into those matches with momentum.

“One of our aims at the start of the season was to finish as high as possible and that’s part of the players’ learning curve along with everything else we’re teaching them.”

Edgeworth are undefeated in eight matches and have won three in a row. They currently sit in fifth place on 23 points, and are in a tight battle for the last remaining finals spot with South Cardiff.

Zane said he expected the Eagles to provide the Jets with a stern test.

“I think it’s good for our boys to play against a team who are desperate for points and they almost need to win all three of their remaining games to help them make the finals,” he explained.

“You would think that Edgeworth would be looking to play a pretty open style of football because they need to win.

“Obviously they beat us the last time we played, so there’s a couple of reasons there why our boys will need to be at the top of their game.”

After international duty and suspension had left his side without a specialist goalkeeper for the past two games, Zane said he was looking forward to having regular number one, Jack Duncan back in goals.

“We’ve got Jack Duncan back and hopefully that will settle a few nerves at the back,” he said.

“Obviously the back four will feel a bit more secure having a specialist goalkeeper in there and although Sam Gallaway did a good job for us last week, we’re happy to welcome Jack back.”

Jets duel for Family Membership pack

Tuesday, 14 August 2012 2:38 PM

A Family Membership pack was on the line when Hunter Ports Newcastle Jets players Ryan Griffiths, James Brown and Scott Neville participated in kick for goal competition at half time in Monday’s NRL clash between the Newcastle Knights and Cronulla Sharks at Hunter Stadium.

The three Jets players were representing contestants Scott McLean, Luke Pleasance and Tania Gross.
Kicking for Luke Pleasance, Ryan Griffiths got the competition off to a flying start, having no troubles kicking three from three.

James Brown followed suit with a similarly flawless performance for his contestant Tania Gross.

Scott Neville and his contestant Scott McLean were the first to bow out of the competition when he was off target with his second and third shots.

Griffiths and Brown then took part in a head-to-head kick-off from 40 metres out. With neither player able to convert, Luke Pleasance and Tania Gross we declared joint winners and both will receive a Jets Family Membership pack for the coming A-League season.

Jets Membership packs provide great value, starting at $230 for a family of three. You can sign up to become a 2012/13 Jets Member by clicking HERE.

Statement made by Robbie Middleby - Jets CEO

Friday, 17 August 2012 2:29 PM

Following media reports today about Patinack Farm's sale of horses as part of its thoroughbred breeding program, there has been some enquiries about potential implications for the Newcastle Jets and Newcastle Knights.

This decision to sell the horses has no impact on either club and Nathan Tinkler's commitment to both is unwavering.

The Tinkler Group acquired both clubs that were in financial crises, extinguished their existing, heavy debt levels and invested considerable funds in them to continue operations and succeed.

That program remains in place, as is Tinkler's commitment to the Hunter region, to ensure we have two strong football clubs of which the entire Hunter region can be proud.

Jets deny Tinkler rumours

Friday, 17 August 2012 7:00 PM

The Newcastle Jets have denied owner Nathan Tinkler's sale of his horse-racing and breeding interests will have any impact of the Hyundai A-League club.

Reports in the media have suggested that Tinkler has been forced to sell some of his racing interests to fund other business ventures, which has raised questions about Tinkler's ownership of the Jets and NRL club Newcastle Knights, though the Hunter Sports Group.

But the Jets released a statement on Friday afternoon, saying that Tinkler's external business deals would have no impact on either club.

"Following media reports today about Patinack Farm 's sale of horses as part of its thoroughbred breeding program, there has been some enquiries about potential implications for the Newcastle Knights and Newcastle Jets.

"This decision to sell the horses has no impact on either club and Nathan Tinkler's commitment to both is unwavering.

HSG in stadium stand-off

MATTHEW KELLY
18 Aug, 2012 04:00 AM

Nathan Tinkler’s Hunter Sports Group remains locked in a stand-off with the state government over debts at Hunter Stadium.

The debts have been a sticking point in the drawn-out negotiations for a new 10-year access agreement for the venue.

A separate skirmish flared up recently involving a $19,000 power bill incurred during the stadium’s redevelopment in 2010.

The debt was the subject of a fiery war of words earlier this month between the Newcastle Knights, which is seeking reimbursement, and Hunter Venues.

‘‘This situation was raised at meetings that were held with Hunter Venues staff and officials and the undertaking was that we [Newcastle Knights] would be reimbursed to the cost,’’ Newcastle Knights financial controller Phillip Blackford wrote in an email to Hunter Venues general manager Bicci Henderson on August 6.

‘‘We will seek any documentation regarding that undertaking, however, given the previous administration’s lack of follow through with formal communication and given the strained relationship between the Knights and Hunter Venues, I would question whether a written undertaking was ever sent.’’

Hunter Venues is part of Venues NSW, which is a division of the NSW Office of Communities.

An Office of Communities spokeswoman said this week that the Knights’ claim had not made any reference to invoices from an electricity supplier.

‘‘Therefore the calculations contained in the invoice cannot be properly checked,’’ she said.

The Knights had been asked to provide appropriate evidence so the matter could be resolved, she said.

Both groups said they were working in good faith to resolve the outstanding matters.

Neither group would comment on the total value of the debts.

‘‘It has been agreed that the balance will be finalised at the same time we complete our current negotiations of the 10-year lease agreement,’’ Hunter Sports Group spokesman Tim Allerton said.

The Office of Communities spokeswoman said no gate takings had been withheld from the Hunter Sports Group while the negotiations were under way.

NT has had a very bumpy road lately it seems.

Moves his family to Singapore, tries to unsuccessfully offload the ailing horse-racing business and subsequent reports that superannuation has not been paid to staff, significant financial hurdles to overcome to complete a major takeover and the ongoing rumours that seem to follow him around at every turn.

What happens if he has to walk away from his sporting investments is a concern, given the saga and the loss of confidence we suffered in the off-season. Lets hope that it does not become an issue.

The Newcastle Herald reported last month that dozens of creditors from Melbourne to Queensland were seeking payment from Tinkler-linked companies Bolkm, Buildev, Patinack Farm and Hunter Sports Group.

The Newcastle Knights and Jets had failed to pay doctors for treatment of players and superannuation payments to staff were late earlier this year. Mr Tinkler reportedly pays about $500,000 a week to run the racing operation.

Jets go head-to-head in intra-club trial

Saturday, 22 September 2012 11:53 AM
The Hunter Ports Newcastle Jets squad were given an opportunity to gain valuable game time and match fitness in Saturday’s intra-club trial match at Thomas and Coffey Park in Weston.

The squad was split into two teams, one wearing the Jets’ Red and Blue home strip, the other in the Jets White and Black away strip.

The game was played in three 30-minute thirds and head coach Gary van Egmond used the match as an opportunity to test a variety of playing formations and personnel.

Jets White had the first clear-cut opportunity of the match with Mitch Cooper’s shot from just inside the area looking to be headed towards goal, only for it to be accidently blocked by the back of teammate Marko Jesic.

From there though, it was Jets Red who controlled the match with Bernardo Ribeiro and Adam Taggart both having shots at goal. However, neither player was able to find a way past Jack Duncan and the score remained 0-0 at the end of the first 30-minute period.

Both teams were playing at a good intensity and looking to pressure their opponents high up the park, but it was the Jets Red who applied the game plan more effectively.

They forced a turnover that allowed Adam Taggart to find himself in space. The forward showed good speed to get ahead of the Jets White defenders and calmly finished past the on-rushing Duncan to make it 1-0.

The pressure applied by Jets Red lead to their second goal a short time later, with Virgili winning the ball before laying it off to Bridges who finished into the top corner.

Relentless pressing from Ben Kantarovski saw the Jets Red make it 3-0 when he dispossessed Duncan and Bridges was able to finish into an empty net to complete his brace.

The start of the final 30-minute period saw a number of National Youth League players and trialists get the opportunity to impress.

Kale Bradbery and Radovan Pavicevic certainly made the most of the chance. Bradbery had two shots saved which lead to Pavicevic nodding home a header on the rebound to make it 4-0 to Jets Red.

As the match wound to an end, Bradbery laid on two more goals for Pavicevic to complete his hat-trick and see the game finish 6-0 in favour of the Jets Red.

Jets Red 6 (Taggart, Bridges x2, Pavicevic x3)
Jets White 0

Jets Red starting XI: Birighitti, Neville, Tiago, Ritter, Kantarovski, Wheelhouse, Zadkovich, Bernardo, Taggart, Virgili, Bridges.

Jets White starting XI: Duncan, Chapman, Regan, Goodwin, Oxborrow, Pepper, Brillante, Cooper, Remington, Ilic, Jesic.

Jets Supporters Away Games Coaches

After the success of the coach service put on for Jets supporters for last seasons final round clash against Sydney FC, The Squadron have decided to expand the service this season to cover the Jets away games against Sydney FC, Central Coast and Western Sydney Wanderers.

These will be a great service to allow more families and under 16's to attend games who dont want to travel by public transport and who just want to get straight to the stadiums.
These prices are for coach travel only and do not include a match ticket. We strongly advise you purchase any match tickets prior to booking your coach ticket.

Bookings are now open for the first NSW away game - Sydney FC vs Newcastle Jets @ Allianz Stadium Saturday 13th October kickoff 5:30pm
Coaches will depart Hunter Stadium carpark for Allianz Stadium, Moore Park (time will be confirmed with you when booking) and then will depart for Newcastle 30 minutes after fulltime.
Cost for this trip per ticket will be $30 adult, $25 kids (u16), $100 family (2a2ch or 1ad3ch)

To purchase your tickets please call Port Stephens Coaches direct on 49822940 during business hours
Online purchase is unfortunately unavailable for this trip but will be available for other trips for the rest of the season.

We will need to have enough numbers to ensure the service goes ahead so please purchase your tickets ASAP, we will have to make a decision by Tuesday 9th October as to whether we have sufficient bookings.
If the service is cancelled, we will notify everybody and all purchases will be refunded.

A portion of ticket sales after a completed service will be donated to The Squadron which all goes towards the tifo displays we design, manufacture and deploy throughout the season. We would love to go bigger and better than the NEWCASTLE drop-down banner tifo from last season, so the more people who come along to NSW away trips will allow us to improve on and expand our displays in the future.
We thank you in advance for your custom, for helping the gameday atmosphere at Hunter Stadium and also for your support for the Jets at away games.

The Newcastle Jets opened their account for the 2012/13 A-League season on Saturday with a fantastic win against Sydney FC in front of a massive crowd of 35,419.

Jets marquee signing Emile Heskey didn’t disappoint, scoring his first goal in only his second appearance for Newcastle.

This week the Jets turn their attention to F3 rivals the Central Coast Mariners at Hunter Stadium in the latest edition of one of the fiercest rivalries in Australian football.

Jets head coach Gary van Egmond has called on the Hunter community to support the Club by making the Membership commitment before Saturday’s big clash.

“We need the hype for this game because if we didn’t have that, it would be just like any other game and it’s not any other game, it’s the derby and there is always more at stake,” van Egmond said.
