Quote:COMEDIAN Russell Brand has made a “generous” donation to families who lost loved ones at the Hillsborough disaster.
The entertainer decided to make a contribution to the Hillsborough Family Support Group (HFSG) after watching spokeswoman Margaret Aspinall speak at the 21st anniversary memorial service at Anfield.
Brand met Mrs Aspinall recently when he attended his book signing at Waterstones, in Bold Street.
The West Ham fan has phoned the mum, who lost her son James, 18, on the Leppings Lane terrace, on two occasions, once when he was in Memphis, Tennessee.
Today, Mrs Aspinall told the ECHO: “It really came out of the blue. He sent me a letter, which was lovely, and said he would like to meet me.
“He mentioned the group on a Billy Butler radio interview and said he had watched me speak and it was very moving.
“He said he loves Liverpool and thinks the work we are doing is very good. It was very nice of him – he did not have to do it.
“I will not disclose how much he gave us, but it was a generous donation. I met him upstairs at Waterstones and he signed his book for me.”

Perception is everything in football:
Crouch - 22 goals from 85 games @ Liverpool = Failure - 8 goals from 45 games @Tottenham = Success
Also: - Liverpool qualify for CL 3/4 years after 25m transfers in 4 years = Failure - Tottenham quality for CL 1/4 year after 80m transfers in 4 years = Success

This is absolutely true. Quote:You had the opportunity to buy so man players with quality. Manchester city has so much quality they dont need and are willing to sell. Adebayor, Wright Phillips, Lescott, RIchards. Thats manchester city alone. I wouldn't call any of those players 'quality'. None of those players would bring anything to the club and Richards will stay at City because he's their only HG player who sees any kind of match time. Liverpool right now need to re-build. They've got Meireles in to replace Alonso in terms of style of play. But no Mascherano replacement is obviously proving problematic. No adequate holding midfielder is creating a schism between the midfield and attacking players because the midfield has to sit deeper. A bid for Rooney, although definitely not legitimate would definitely ruffel some feathers and announce some kind of ambition from the club. It's not like it could further undermine Hodgson's integrity either.

The whole farking team is sitting so deep. You can tell the emphasis is on sitting back and knocking it around, and as clubs know we are weak right now, they put us under pressure and don't let us do that, naturally. We need to go out there and do the pressing. We need to go out there and attack and push forward and create chances. We have scored FOUR goals from open play all farking season. We can afford to have defensive frailties as long as we are scoring up the other end.
ATTTAAAAAACK. For gods sake.

You know, in the outside chance that they manage to control their excessive losses enough to qualify for the champions league...

Probably won't come to that what with their spending and all.

ATTTAAAAAACK. For gods sake. We're making concessions for Mascherano's absence and sitting deeper, almost playing how Fulham used to under Hodgson. However we're paying the price for a clear lack of attacking cohesion and we really need to up our game. We need a decent holding midfielder come January and we need to bring in that second striker. ASAP. Quote:They'll cross that bridge when they get to it somehow. Probably won't come to that what with their spending and all. It would make more sense to make allowances for it now, rather than go 'oh shit, waht do we do now?' next year.

Well apart from Richards they do have Joe Hart, Nedum Onohua and Michael Johnson as well as Kelvin Etuhu and Shaun Wright Phillips. As well as Vladimir Weiss. The players are there just not consistent starting XI players

Second striker is extremely important. We need someone to take the focus off Torres. Someone like Carlton Cole....

sydneycroatia58 wrote:That was more down to discontent as opposed to not being good enough. Not really. He wasn't playing well for them and wasn't making the grade. It was cause and effect. Quote:I'm not saying they would include them, just saying that they do have the players if they need to in a pinch. Well Vladimir Weiss is on loan at Rangers with an option to buy. They'll probably take it. Ditto Onouha at Southampton.

Quote:Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson has left both Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres out of his travelling squad for tomorrow night's Europa League clash in Naples.
With one eye on this weekend's vital Barclays Premier League game against Blackburn, the Reds' boss has opted to leave his star duo behind on Merseyside to give them maximum preparation time ahead of Sunday's fixture.
Hodgson is also without Glen Johnson (injury) and Daniel Agger (illness) for the trip to Italy, but Christian Poulsen is fit to return to the squad after missing Sunday's defeat to Everton.
Liverpool squad: Reina, Jones, Hansen, Konchesky, Aurelio, Kyrgiakos, Skrtel, Wilson, Carragher, Kelly, Spearing, Poulsen, Shelvey, Maxi, Babel, Jovanovic, Pacheco, Eccleston, Cole, Ngog. ](*,) ](*,) ](*,) ](*,) ](*,) Poulsen, fanfucking tastic. Lucas and Meireles have been left out too. ---------Ngog------- Jova------Cole-----Maxi ---Poulsen---Shelvey Kon--Skrtel-Carra-Kelly ---------Reina What a shcoking team.

get Jonjo in there... as someone said previously about Carlton Cole i will seriously go skitso if we sign him, like he's struggling in a struggling team, the question i have is what sort of player upfront do we need to sign, a second striker similar to say a Luis Garcia role, an out and out striker like Carlton Cole, or a big target man like Crouch...
personally I'd love to have Llorente, Crouch isn't realistic because he wouldn't leave Spurs under Arry and while playing Champions League football in London... Llorente gives us an aerial option and decent on the ground too, ideally i'd have Llorente AND a second striker/poacher/natural goalscorer, although a few come to mind i don't see them as a realistic option in the short term

In answer to your question about a striker, I think we need a big, strong, quick player. Somebody who will hustle and bustle the defenders and wreak some havoc.

Just read some of the debate on the previous page having posted a jesus wept comment after reading the first page
Roy's system is very much as described there - two banks of four - sitting back and waiting for teams to come on to them
the problem is the squad hasn't been built for that - to cope with sitting back and letting a team coming onto to you need (i) pace to cope with switched play and teams passing around and through you (ii) tacklers to win the ball back without pressing (iii) aerially dominant centre backs to cope with the inevitably higher amount of crosses you will receive into the box
we have a dearth of these - our central midfielders might put the foot in, but gerrard and mereiles won't do it consistently, and neither lucas or poulsen will get across the ground as quickly as mascher would
our usual wide players have no pace at all and at least one of our full-backs was bought to work in a high-pressing, high possession pressure team
skrtel and agger have never really convinced me in the air, and carra and greek who are both decent in that area are both slow and are used to getting better protection from midfield and a compact 4-5-1 than they get at present
the team as currently constituted needs to go back to the high-pressing, high possesion control-the-game type play that we've done well for the past 5 years and less of this 'concede ground in the middle, sit back and wait for them to come at you, and hit the big man when you get the ball type tactic'
I mean if by some miracle we did get 4th in the next season or two under roy can anybody seriously see that working in the champions league - we'd be a laughing stock and the copenhagens and bate's of this world would be looking forward to having a real go at us (because we would let them)
Saw this on LFC... great post I think.
