Just out of interest, what are you studing and where? Or alternatively, where are you planning to study or where is your alma mater?
I'll kick it off,
Business degree with Marketing and Sport Business Mgmt double major at Massey University in Palmerston North.
Considering a semester in Australia where I can go to Deakin University by paying my fees to Massey.

Arts at University of Melbourne will probably be my top preference next year. Ill probably defer whatever I get. Have a go at some other things. I have no certainty in my life at the moment so its hard to plan for anything.

Just study what you enjoy and not what you think will get you a job otherwise you will end up dropping out in the first year. Talk to as many people as possible about different courses and know whats involved with them.

Even if it's murky now the picture will become far clearer at the end of first year when you can easily cross-credit everything.

My first preference for next year is a Bach Arts with a major in Secondary Teaching at Uni of Western Sydney.
My other preferences were just a bunch of media courses.

Bizarre, Funky - I have about four friends who teach at one of those up here.
I'm doing a Bachelor of Nursing at QUT, majoring in Intensive Care nursing - then following on with a Graduate Bachelor of Midwifery.

I could never teach at a school. Young kids smell and are grotty. Highschoolers have no respect + It would be hard to avoid 'desiring' the girls.

Can't stand little kids, and when it comes to the teaching staff, you are surrounded by only a few people your age whilst the vast majority are 50-60 year old women, very difficult to enjoy yourself there when it comes to socializing with other primary teachers if you're a young male...unless you like talking about knitting and wine

No idea what I want to do. Tossing up between BA (Media & Communications) @ Usyd, Arts/Law @ Usyd, Arts/Commerce @ Usyd, Journalism/Law @ UTS.
I actually don't know if I want to do journalism, law, marketing... Tbh I'd just love to be a football journalist but that's probably not going to happen.

I'm studying at University of Wollongong, in my first year of a Bachelor of Journalism, possibly becoming a double with B. International Studies later on. CCM4LIFE wrote:No idea what I want to do. Journalism ahead of BA (M&Comm). Journalism courses are about teaching you how to write, as opposed to teaching you all this theory waffle. At UOW, you can take most BCM classes as Philosophy classes (BCM106=PHIL106, etc) because they're all "media philosophy" etc. Jour is more dedicated to getting out there and writing real stories about your town, as opposed to looking at how other stories are constructed. On the flipside, marketing is really interesting. Some of the stuff they get to watch... =d>

If I did arts id psych, criminology, anthropology, sociology, philosophy, just stuff like that which Id find interesting. With the intention of doing a JD or honours + masters afterwards. Ive also thought about arts at monash then transferring to arts/law. Or I could probably get into Deakin straight off the bat if I put in a little work in the next 3 weeks. I think right now (literally this instant) thanks to this post/thread im finding motivation to study for my exams next week. :D but of course I have to check and reply to every unread thread here first :S

Where else do you not have to work,Write a few things in a book, have breaks for lunch and recess and if you really don't feel like doing anything just turn up to class and get yelled at a little. Once you leave you realize that it's the most easiest time you will ever have in life.

Heh trust me again mate, absolutely everyone thinks the same thing when they are in year 7.. But when you finally get out of school, it's not much but a kick in the arse for the next 5 years, unless you are in really favourable circumstances heh.
I'm sure most of the guys that've agreed with what I said above only wish that they had so many people as you do to reinforce it to them, heh. I know I do.

Even on this side of the Tasman 'junior' high is pants, but when you get into high school there is all the freedom with about 1 day a week of actual working time.
University (over here at least) pretty much equates to living in poverty unless your parents are loaded. While you have fun and meet great people it is ultimately a means to an end, and when you hit second and third year you just want it to be over (probably how you feel about school). The most exciting thing for me about being at uni is that my objectives have changed. I no longer want to meet people, get smashed every night and get crazy with as many girls as possible. Instead, I am excited about getting a good job, buying a house, finding a missus, and having kids. It's weird because some of my mates are still where my head was at before and get pretty stroppy when I turn E because I don't really want it, or only have 3 or 4 beers because I have class the next day.
In short, chin up little chief. You'll be surprised how much better things get and how much yourself and the people around you will change over the next few years. Enjoy school while you're there, it's excellent.

Edited by thewestisland: 26/10/2010 04:23:39 PM Why I love Uni, while still getting a credit average. :d

They can't coexist well at all. It got to the point where I transferred universities just so I picked up my sack and actually started working hard at it.

Depends if youre going to Geelong/Waurn Ponds or Burwood. Burwood isnt too far from the city and its in a nice suburban area. They have housing across the road where they do a lot of sharehousing. Im sure they have campus accomodation too, not sure where though. As far as the Burwood campus is concerned I think its alright. Some people think its really ugly but I have no idea what theyre talking about. The science areas look shit but the law building is nice and new.

Oh and with the whole leaving highschool thing. Ive had a shit high school life so I wont miss it. I liked bits of this year and have many good memories but its always been a place that disagreed with me.
The only thing ill miss is catching up with all my friends every day and midday finishes.

Ive got early entry into Wollongong but my missus wants to go to Newey so im still going for the ATAR. Wollongong is excellent. The last few years the uni has been expanding rapidly and it is very good quality uni. My housemate did commerce at UOW and loved it and i have just finished civil engineering at UOW. The teaching is quality and is consistently ranked number 1 in australia for teaching. The rest of the atmosphere is pretty good as well. Lots of things to do, parties, events, anywhere u live you are less than 3 ks from the beach. Wollongong is a uni town. I dont know much about newcastle but friends who go there have said its fairly similar. After all they are both steel cities :d

I think you'll find you're view of the world may change or be reshaped in the years at university. You'll make new friends who share your view, and it is usually these friends you have for life. But of course, try not to lose contact with friends from high school.

The only thing ill miss is catching up with all my friends every day and midday finishes. At uni you will spend 3 hrs a day in class and the rest with your mates drinking beer in the sun. It is a hell of a lot better than school.

The other good thing about UOW is that you don't feel like just a number or a statistic. I went to Uni of Canberra for a while and dropped out but I knew from that time there that the uni just treated you like everyone else. You were literally dollars in their wallet at the end of the day. Same with my mates at ANU - alot of them tell me they wished they had've joined me on the coast. I live on campus at UOW and I share the residence with 200 people from over 30 countries - there is literally not a day that goes by where you don't hear another language or talk to someone about their homeland. Only an hour from Sydney by train, three hours from Canberra by road (good for me, maybe not for you), and the uni itself has some awesome gigs every now and then. Get into any faculty other than engineering or science and it's babes akimbo. ;) Edited by dale1878: 26/10/2010 07:07:03 PM

I'm planning to go to the University of Western Australia and do a Bachelor of Arts next year with a double major in Politics and probably German/History.

All im there for is the masters content and the unis name on my degree. Other than that UNSW is the biggest joke for lecturers and there quality of teaching, its rubbish.

So any more comments on Macquarie?
I think I'll be starting there next year and I want to know what the "scene" is like around there? I've heard it's pretty quiet and nobody really hangs around.. Which would be a disappointing for me..

UoM is in an amazing location and Monash has a great reputation. Its convenient for me cause its really close. If I do end up there. And offers reputable degrees.

Why do people hate on it? Is it low quality or something? Seen as inferior to UNSW and University of Sydney I would assume already, but is there something wrong? I'd be more keen on UNSW - My house is 2 minutes away from there. (I'm moving back from Stockholm on sunday). I'm not sure I could do it by distance. It involves some physical stuff. I'm just coming back from overseas and don't really have any mates in Australia anymore. It's pretty depressing actually, and it'd be nice to be at a uni where the social scene is decent. I cant complain, I went to UOW for my undergrad degree and any sydney uni student thinks that UOW is scum of the earth. Dont worry macquarie is a good uni as is UOW. I go to UNSW at the moment but i dont really know the social seen as i travel up on the train from the Illawarra every uni day. I have friends that say UNSW social seen is really good.

i found the feedback with regards to an assessment a laugh and a half
using 'advanced capstone course' is a fine way of saying 'yeh but nah' in terms of getting a better mark for an essay :P
