Responding with a 'some people might be interested' is a reasonable answer to 'Does anyone on this forum care' I don't even understand why he has to be quizzed by you like he is in a police interview, for posting GWS membership figures in an AFL thread It's a pointless bump. He's admitted himself that the figures are essentially meaningless.

Quote:Fans fail to show for pre-season Date March 17, 2013 Not only a less lucrative title in prizemoney terms, the AFL's 2013 pre-season grand final drew the worst crowd to the event in nearly three decades. Though the league defended the popularity of the NAB Cup after Brisbane Lions defeated Carlton - highlighting that television ratings were up on last year - an attendance of 24,884 at Etihad Stadium on Friday night was nearly half the crowd that was at the same venue to watch the same clubs in 2007. There has not been such a low attendance to a pre-season grand final since 1986 when 19,627 people attended Waverley Park to watch Hawthorn beat Carlton. Since 1977, only two other crowds have been poorer - 24,812 in 1985 and 20,028 in 1982. While NAB Cup grand final crowds have fallen since the most recent highpoint of 50,533 were at Etihad to see St Kilda beat Geelong in 2004, attendances exceeded 40,000 in 2011 and 2010, albeit with two Victorian clubs duelling. Advertisement The highest crowd on record for a pre-season grand final was 75,533, for a match in 1993 between Essendon, eventual home-and-away premier that year, and Richmond at Waverley. Also, 74,786 witnessed Hawthorn beat Port Adelaide in 1999 at the last pre-season grand final Waverley hosted. That NAB Cup matches are not included in club memberships - meaning Carlton and Brisbane members had to pay to attend on Friday night, where AFL members did not - is clearly a factor for fans. The cheapest general admission ticket for Friday's night grand final was $26, the cheapest for a child was $5, while the cheapest family deal was $52. ''The NAB Cup continues to be a popular pre-season competition with fans and clubs, particularly as many games are played in regional centres where local communities get to see their AFL teams play live,'' said AFL corporate affairs boss James Tonkin. ''We were expecting a crowd of around 25,000 given an interstate club was playing, so were pleased with the attendance and also the TV audience, which was up on last year. ''The Gabba was not available to host the game in Brisbane, hence the decision to play the match at Etihad Stadium. A match at Metricon - not the Lions' home ground - was expected to draw a crowd of around 5000-10,000 people.'' The opening night of this year's NAB Cup competition involving Essendon, the Western Bulldogs and Collingwood in a triangular competition at Etihad Stadium drew more than the grand final, with 26,921 attending on a Friday night. ''Based on recent years, the NAB Cup crowds were largely what we expected,'' Etihad Stadium's communications manager Bill Lane said. The keenly anticipated first bout between Carlton and Collingwood since Mick Malthouse became Blues coach clearly would have drawn a healthier audience than a match involving Brisbane, which pocketed $142,000. Carlton won $40,000 as runner-up. In 2008 the prize for the pre-season premier was $350,000 and $160,000 for second. Great to see the lions win. A joke that the game wasn't in QLD but I guess the small crowd in Melbourne justified the decision.

Can anyone tell me some cheap players that will play for Supercoach. Haven't been paying attention and the season starts soon so any help would be great.

Supercoach is about picking quality rookies (on minimum wages) who are going to play games, allowing you to stock up on elite midfielders where the big points are to be earned.
At this point in time, these are my rookies (but it might change by the start of the season proper):
Van Unen (Ess) Goodes (WB) Terlich (Melb) Crouch (Adel) Viney (Melb) O'Meara (GCS) Daw (Nth) Rowe (Carl) Membrey (Swans) Whitfield (Giants)
A few mature age rookies in there (good chance of getting games), and as no. 1 draft pick, Whitfield is a bit more expensive, but once again, good chance of playing games.
Of that lot - O'Meara is an absolute lock and will be the most chosen player in the comp, more than likely.

Not really, pre season and regular grand finals are always hosted in Melbourne regardless of the geographical location of the teams contesting it. I doubt hosting it in Brisbane would have changed anything, no one really cares about pre season, plus I'd wager that more Carlton fans in Melbourne would show than Lions fans in Brisbane.

No, the game was meant to be held in Brisbane. The Gabba was being used for the Sheffield Shield though. The AFL decided against using Metricon for whatever reason.

That's right - the AFL figured that far less would have attended at Metricon than at Etihad. It's a poor turn out because these same two teams played off in the pre-season final about 6 years ago, and attracted around 45k to that game. I also note that Carlton's membership sales probably aren't where they would have expected them to be.

It's more likely Demetriou and co wouldn't have wanted to be out of Melbourne on Grand Prix weekend.

I'm pretty sure the AFL can afford to pay for him to fly up to Queensland for the game and back on the same night. Especially given it was a Friday night and the race is a Sunday.

Spare a thought for Andrew Demetriou, whose annual salary has dropped to $1.88 million. http://www.afl.com.au/news/2013-03-18/demetriou-earns-his-crustAFL returned to profitability in 2012, making a net profit of $6.7 million (after a loss of $23 mill the previous year, its first loss in 10 years). Its record revenue of $424 million was up $82 million on the previous year. Its operating profit was $296 million (up $62 million), with $200 million being distributed back to the 18 clubs as part of their annual dividend. $15 million was allocated to clubs in need as an additional payment (incl Giants, Suns, bulldogs, etc) A new record of memberships in 2012 of 707,621, up from 650,373 in 2011. People try and make a song and dance of the AFL paying big bucks to support the Giants and Suns. They're dreaming. With total revenue increasing $82 million in just one year - the amount going to the giants and suns is a drop in the ocean, and in any event, they are already both generating significant revenues in their own right.

I was listening to SEN last night, after midnight, and they had a show discussing Dreamteam, but much of what they were talking about was applicable to Supercoach.
These are some extra names I intend to research up to and during round 1:
Backs:
Stevenson - Port Jack Frost - Coll Adian Corr - GWS
Mids:
Oliver Wines (?) - racking up the disposals during the pre-season Matt Jones Koby Stevens (mature age recruit to Bulldogs, doing well pre-season, but may have got injured, one to watch) David Mundy - has been a prolific scorer in the past, may have been injured last season, apparently comes in at a good price
went to bed before they got to the other positions, but I think you can download a podcast

11.mvfc.11 wrote:So wait, they're the Gold Coast Lions now? Saying they should have played on the Coast, rather than the city which birthed the game, and both clubs playing, is ridiculous. There is no way the crowd would have been bigger than it was if it had been played on the GC. The lions earnt the right to host the match. It should be played where they want it to be played. They didn't even have one home match during the Nab cup. Meanwhile I don't even think the Suns even made it on tv. Decisions like this isn't going to grow the game in QLD. If it were the Suns who earnt the right to host the final, would it of been played in Melbourne as well then?

Anyway, 25k at Etihad was disappointing, especially with Carlton having a new coach and all.
