Five former stars make Socceroos

Five former stars make Socceroos

Five famed former Central Coast Mariners players have today been named in Ange Postecoglou’s provisional 30-man squad for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

Mathew Ryan (Club Brugge), Mile Jedinak (Crystal Palace), Alex Wilkinson (Jeonbuk Hyundai), Oliver Bozanic (FC Lucerne) and Tom Rogic (Melbourne Victory on loan from Glasgow Celtic FC) are all in contention to head to South America as part of the Socceroos squad for Australia’s fourth appearance at the FIFA World Cup Finals.

Central Coast Mariners Head Coach Phil Moss said that everyone involved with the Club ought to be excited for Ryan, Jedinak, Wilkinson, Bozanic and Rogic.

“To have five key former players involved with one of the most anticipated FIFA World Cups in history is something all our fans ought to be extremely proud of,” Moss said.

“I know everyone involved with the Mariners will be glued to their televisions, football websites and reading newspapers throughout the competition as they track the progress of our boys and Australia’s national team.”

“On behalf of the Club I’d like to wish Mat, Mile, Alex, Oli and Tom the best of luck during the pre-tournament camps and the tournament itself should they make Ange’s final 23 player squad,” Moss concluded.

The Socceroos – minus Ryan who has two matches left to play with Club Brugge as they vie for the Belgian Pro League title – will take part in a training camp on the Central Coast from 16 to 22 May.

Local football fans will have the opportunity to get up close and personal with Australia’s top players before they jet from Sydney to the land of the samba this Sunday 18 May at an open training session and fan day at Central Coast Stadium. The fan day will commence at 10:00am.

Postecoglou’s squad will take on South Africa, or Bafana Bafana, in their farewell match on Monday 26 May. Kick-off at ANZ Stadium is at 7:30pm, with tickets to see the Socceroos’ final match on home soil prior to their 2014 FIFA World Cup Group B assault available via Ticketek.

That's pretty awesome to see 5 former CCMs in the lineup, one as captain ?

You haven't talked to the right people, or don't get around much.

I've always been a CCM member, but live in the upper Sydney suburbs. Was a Northern Spirit supporter in the NSL days and followed Laurie/Hutcho/Wiko etc to CCM. I know a few who did the same. Still live in Sydney and hate Nth Sydney Oval and that other shite place on the Northern beaches where Spirit played.

We should never leave Bluetongue. It is a beautiful place to go (and easier to get to than Nth Sydney Oval, even from where I live).

NSW clubs overhaul youth systems
Tuesday, 23 September 2014 - Michael Huguenin

It did not take long for Phil Moss to realise that Central Coast Mariners' youth development and talent identification needed an overhaul.

Just two months after replacing Graham Arnold as Central Coast's coach last term, Moss waved goodbye to Michael McGlinchey and Trent Sainsbury in the January transfer window, leaving him without seven key players from the Hyundai A-League championship-winning side of the season before.

While Bernie Ibini returned on loan from Shanghai SIPG, the Central Coast's squad desperately needed an injection of experience and quality.

Moss signed Eddy Bosnar and Kim Seung-yong but when he looked at the Mariners' Foxtel National Youth League (NYL) team, he realised the cupboard was bare in Gosford.

"And that's when I sat back and had a good hard look at it and thought, 'well, if we are a development club and openly honest about giving young Australian players a chance, then we really have to get our own backyard in order'," Moss told Goal.

"It's not just about the first-team squad, it's about building for the future and progression, planning.

"We're a club that's only had three coaches in 10 years and three CEOs and two owners. So we've got to make sure that there's always a progression plan in place for the players as well."

Despite the Gosford-based club having set up the Central Coast Mariners Academy (CCMA) in 2012, Moss was not satisfied with the young players on offer and was not convinced they were ready for senior football.

Instead he signed Hyundai A-League journeyman Isaka Cernak, plus Matt Sim and Glen Trifiro from the NSW PS4 NPL, but also made a note to improve the Mariners' talent identification and youth development processes.

In July, Stu Jacobs joined the Mariners as their new Head of Youth Football, while earlier this month Central Coast unveiled the first official scouting network in the history of the Hyundai A-League.

Five scouts will cover New South Wales for the Mariners, looking to identify the best young talent to join the CCMA and Central Coast's Foxtel NYL squad.

"I think the first tangible benefit of the scouting network was at our National Youth League squad trials and there was a huge, huge shift in quality from what we saw last year to what we saw this year," Moss said.

Moss believes that talent identification and youth development don't just make sense on the field but off the field as well.

"If you look at the World Cup squad, you know, there was five or six Mariners in that squad," he said.

"If you look at the [Socceroos'] game against Belgium, you had Maty Ryan, Trent Sainsbury and Alex Wilkinson all developed by the Mariners as the back three for Australia.

"Things like that really show what this club's all about and that's our goal.

“When Graham Arnold was in charge here, we saw something like $4.5million worth of playing talent leave the club and that's obviously contributed big time to our sustainability as a football club."

For Sydney FC's new academy director Kelly Cross, the financial benefits of youth development are secondary to the on-field stability it brings.

In nine seasons in the Hyundai A-League, the Sky Blues have had nine head coaches, including Steve Corica in a caretaker role and incumbent Graham Arnold.

Cross wants to change Sydney from a 'coach-centred model' to a 'club-centred model' - a club that is consistent despite who is in charge of the first team.

"The teams who seem to be consistently successful [around the world] are those with a club-centred model, where there's a club philosophy and it's a long-term vision that is safeguarded by the key members of the club," Cross told Goal.

"So from a football point of view, it makes sense that if you're developing players in a certain way and you have a consistent playing style, then you have more chance at success with the senior team.

"Then if you look at the business side of it, you might have to buy fewer players."

In a salary-capped league with restrictions on foreign players, youth development and talent identification can make or break a team.

As more Hyundai A-League clubs begin to develop academy structures ahead of 2016 - when each club's NYL and junior sides are expected to compete in their respective state-based competitions during the Australian winter - having the right pathways and processes in place will be critical.

But for Moss it boils down to one simple concept: "The whole thing is geared towards making sure before a youth team player comes into the first-team environment, they know exactly what's expected of them as a footballer and as a person."

Sounds great, but with the constant changing back and forth between CCM and CCF for the NPL and youth sides it is a confusing time for parents and aspiring young players, and the coaches who are trying to deliver consistent quality outcomes for the kids. Many young local players are trialling down in the Sydney regions and Newcastle because of the CCM academy uncertainty.
It is also rich for Moss to talk about youth development when he was the one standing up at the trials last year and telling everyone CCM were in it for the long haul.
Hopefully things will settle down into consistent, quality coaching delivery over several seasons.

I bloody hope so, because it is bloody confusing for any kids and parents involved at the moment.

NORTH Sydney Oval is set for a multi-million dollar overhaul in an ambitious bid to attract top-flight sporting events and double current attendance figures.

North Sydney Council plans to spend nearly $6 million to bring the ground up to modern sporting standards, including new grandstand seating, an outdoor video screen and improved lighting for night fixtures.

The oval is one of the oldest cricket grounds in Australia, with the first pitch laid in 1867.

“I think it’s tremendous,” North Sydney Bears general manager Greg Florimo said.

“I’ve been a regular visitor to North Sydney Oval for the past 30 years and it’s certainly in need of refurbishment.”

The Bears are thrilled the plans include provisions for drop-in wicket technology. This will allow the wickets to be removed easily to allow the football codes to play during the cricket season.

“It’s important the oval is able to provide year-round access to all sporting codes,” he said.

The management of the oval has held discussions with key figures in football, rugby union, rugby league and cricket and they all have indicated their interest if the ground is improved.

More than 90,000 people attended events at the oval in the past year. It is estimated to be worth more than $3 million to the local economy.

The council aims to double the current attendance to 200,000 a year by 2020.

The oval is already attracting high-profile events. Just last week it was the venue for the Central Coast Mariners versus Melbourne Victory A-League match.

It is also attracting cultural events — it will host North Sydney Leisure And Lifestyle Festival and the Party In The Park next year.

If you think the Mariners are going to wear the cost of drop in pitches then your deluded.
Mariners will only play on it if its cheap and they are looking for a buyer if the council think they spent 6 million now to charge the Mariners even part of the cost for drop in pitches. Thats probably why Charlseworth did the backflip recently.
Maybe North Sydney council think if they spend 6 million and get more events they can then get the big upgrade.

Hey guys! I'm getting an up-to-date list of the player contracts for all HAL teams. I was wondering if you could run your eye over the below, and tell me if I have left anyone out, if anyone in the list has left, if a player is/isn't a marquee/foreigner and I haven't listed it appropriately, or if any of the contract lengths are off? Any help would be hugely appreciated!

Not sure if that is what Gatty is referring to though, or if it is even true.

CCM and FFA have launched joint investigation after tactics were leaked before SFC game. Leadership group called for phones to be handed in, "line in the sand" style. NOT management or MC. Majority of group have agreed

The drama of this mole business aside, I think I can see the method behind this so-called 'offensive doctrine' madness at your club? I know this is contrary to football purists, but for wider appeal we've all noted at times how people respond to the 'excitement' of high-scoring games and during the A-League's earlier heyday for crowds, especially at clubs like Mariners (Averaging over 12k season 2/3), that was back when clubs like the Mariners, Roar (Averaging 16k or so) and some others were involved in some of those high-scoring results.

Games where it's 3-2 or even 5-4 etc... they are defensive disasters for coaches and football purists, but the mainstream press and casual fans, they call it 'exciting' and indeed it makes for plenty of goal-scoring highlights for the reels, sports bulletins etc... Casual folks, sports fans, they rightly or wrongly, want to see goals and so the Mariners seeking to actively pursue that kind of football to improve their business, metrics, other areas - fair play? It doesn't have to be entirely contrary to results either - if you guys can be potent enough at home to out-score opponents to secure the result too, then it could be a real winner for your club and the league? :-k

Infact I think some casuals, mainstream, may miss that about the A-League, so your club bringing that novel approach - may be interesting to see how viewers, fans, coverage/press etc respond?

Ray Gatt is saying it - who is usually pretty reliable about the Mariners. That said does he have a Euro passport?

Thought I saw some journalist (can't remember who) saying he doesn't.

Birnie Ibini didn't have one either and that didn't stop him from going to play in Belgium.

Loaned Kalik now too.

If Bray was in goals (hell even Heward-Belle) and with Garcia finally giving us something in midfield, we're definitely in better shape.

Question is what happens if Garcia and Ferreira leave at the end of the season?

So youve bought in Garcia, Fletcher, McDonald, Bray and Stella.

Youve "released" Nick Fitzgerald, Sim and Reddy (though before the window)

And sold Caceres.

One of the biggest midseasons for a club but is the club in better shape?

We seem to be on the field. Garcia seems to have given the team a boost and all accounts I have heard is that the team are hugely motivated with him around. But it may also be because we are learning how to defend better. There have been signs in the last 2-3 games that possession is more of a priority. I thought Storm Roux's goal at the weekend was one of the best we've scored this season because the lead up play involved us holding the ball and being intelligent about it, then pouncing when the opportunity arose.
Josh Bingham looks like an elegant player who offers more up front than O'Donovan and can link play very well. Liam Rose was actually excellent at the weekend. Austin is growing in confidence and Fabio seems to like the competition.
We're progressing after a pretty disasterous first half of the season.
RedShirtWilly makes a good point about next season, but for now, we can't really look past the next game (football cliche #27). I can't wait to play Sydney again.

Apparently Liam Rose has wracked up over 30 appearances with the Mariners these past two seasons. He's still only just 18?! What do you guys make of his performances this season?
