Ten/ONE should be broadcasting the entire season.

Going to be an interesting year, considering how many rule changes are in place. It's a shame most of the cars look like they have vibrators on the front, though. Ah well, bring on the new season. Williams to finally get back in the winner's circle this season :)

Good start by Ricciardo. The cars this year are pretty disappointing as a spectacle. ~5 seconds/lap slower and much, much more quiet.

Good to see Ricciardo doing well and Vettel not. Only redeeming feature of the new car is the turbo, sounds pretty cool. Other than that, the lack of trademark noise is going to lose F1 a lot of fans.

Not to mention what is meant to be the 'pinnacle' of motorsport is now slower than Formula 2.

They're not slower than GP2 cars  Cars will get faster as the season progresses, it was always going to take time to optimize the cars according to the new rules.

Some stats from yesterday compared to last year.

I expect we'll see better lap times further into the season.

Straight line speed is purely down to the fact that the rear wing opens up more in the DRS this year. The lap times are going to remain down.

Ok, 'slower than' was a bit of an exaggeration but at Bahrain testing the backmarkers were only 2 seconds faster than a GP2 car.

EDIT: Actually, I double checked that, Fabio Leimer ran a 1:39.427 in Bahrain last year - Maldonado's fastest lap was indeed slower than that in pre-season testing. In fact, 4 GP2 cars ran faster than that in Qualification at Bahrain.

DRS was not used today fyi.
Well done to DR in his 1st drive for RBR proper so to speak.
He has served his apprenticeship well and in todays wet final quali he was bloody great !
Notable mention of Magnussen's rookie GP quali 4th.
haha to Pettel seeing his No2 UP there from the get go tomorrows race.
Could be anybodies tomorrow veryvery open due to the new set ups etc.
Merc have spent a bomb to get back up the front.
Hope the Red cars get amongst it !

Turbo sound sucks - woeful just woeful !

Yeah, what I meant to say was that the wing is more open. There's less on both the front and rear wings and thus less downforce, hence higher top speeds. But there's less torque and hence they're slower through the corners.

Weird ass start.

Vettel having serious problems, dropped down heaps.

Rosberg to 1st, Ricciardo holds his place.

Vettel and Hamilton out in the first 5 laps. Citing engine problems. Kobiyashi is facing point penalties after crashing into Masa in the opening lap. He didn't start braking until the final 50 meter sign, and just ran into Masa. Did a Maldonardo.

Speak of the devil, Maldonado has just decided to pull out on lap 32. Sounds like an issue with the Turbo Charger.

Riccardo brings it home in second. Brilliant drive from him.

Magnusson takes third, great drive by him too.

Button 4th.

he must've thought he was trippin when he had all that extra fuel on board to put the pedal to the metal

Great race, more competitive than usual without Vettel or Hamilton. "HAM OUT" are the six greatest letters in F1.

Well done by Kevin Magnusson, podium on debut is something special.

If he had "all that extra fuel on board" he'd have been running slower due to the extra weight. If he was burning fuel faster than the permitted rate he'd have run out or had to stop more because the tanks are a fixed size. Hopefully the RBR appeal is successful because it's rather confusing.

i know he didnt actually have extra fuel on board at the start
however he would've thought he had extra in reserve per hour due to his failing meter

There isn't enough information as to exactly how far over the consumption limit he was, but if he's 0.1 kg/h over once or twice and they took a podium finish off him that's pretty rough.

rules are rules...everybody is subject to them

stupid rules they are though and not really in the spirit of the pinnacle of motorsport,
however again everyone has to comply so Ricciardo cant complain

What I don't understand is why a team would knowingly break the rules, in full knowledge of the fact that all data has to be submitted to the stewards after the race. That coupled with the reports that the fuel meters have been playing up all weekend makes it all seem unlikely.

But if it has happened, can't really argue.

Red Bull have appealed the ruling. Given that they had to replace the fuel meter overnight and they've been an issue for multiple teams means RBR should have a reasonable grounds for appeal.
