Player exits leave void in Cannons
BY ROY WARD
06 Jun, 2011 12:00 AM
GAIN two players, lose three more.

Staying at the top of the Victorian Premier League isn't getting any easier for Oakleigh Cannons despite signing two well-credentialled players before the transfer deadline.

The Cannons have signed former Newcastle United player Richard Offiong and attacker Hayden Doyle from Bentleigh Greens.

Offiong, capped three times for England's under-19 side, has already shown his quality by setting up the winning goal against Springvale White Eagles on debut and scoring the winner in the Cannons' fourth-round Mirabella Cup 1-0 win over State League 1 side Pascoe Vale last Wednesday.

Offiong's polish showed in the White Eagles goal as he dribbled past two defenders and put a low cross onto the boot of James Robinson, who finished from close range.

But just as Offiong finds his feet the Cannons have lost winger Jimmy Downey, who has left to begin pre-season with A-League side Wellington Phoenix. Robinson is trialling in Thailand and midfielder Frankie Lagana is on the Gold Coast trialling with A-League outfit Gold Coast United.

Cannons coach Arthur Papas said he anticipated his team could lose all three players and possibly a couple more as A-League clubs fill out their squads for the coming season.

"This happened to the club last year and the team never recovered," he said. "I wasn't going to let that happen this year. Despite signing these two players we are pretty depleted at present and have two tough games coming up."

Offiong is a traditional striker who loves to get behind defences and has a sharp eye for goal. He was originally set to sign with the Cannons before the season started but Papas decided to sign Gold Coast United striker Andrew Barasic instead, although Barasic ended up not joining the club.

Papas said the Cannons were fortunate to have won the 26-year-old's signature after his management received other offers from the United Kingdom.

"He is not some washed-up player," Papas said. "He is just 26 and has come off a horror 18 months that was not due to anything he had done. He just didn't fit in with the club he moved to and in Europe where there is a lot of competition for places you can get left out pretty quickly."

Despite Offiong's strong start, Papas said he still had a long way to go.

"It's too soon to call his signing a raging success," he said.

"But he has the chance to do that if he comes in and puts in a big effort.

"It would be naive of him not to come here and be looking to move into the A-League. He can play at that level but the best way to do that will be put in a big season here. That will set up other moves because even if the A-League doesn't look at him, Asia is right on our doorstep and there is plenty of money there."

The Cannons host Victorian Training Centre this Wednesday night and then host Bentleigh Greens on Queen's Birthday. Both games will be at Jack Edwards Reserve.

I'm thinking about going to my first VPL match next week, seeing Richmond play South Melbourne. Does anyone know about tickets, price of beer (if it's served) or anything else important that I'd need to know?

The A-league season was just little too short and underwhelming for me this year.

VPL is more expensive than it probably should be, it's $12 for adult of $8 concession, they serve beer but can't remember the price, the kranskys they serve at Richmond are worth a try

South Melbourne FC saw their hopes of a spot in the finals evaporate as they were held to a 1-1 draw at home to Bentleigh Greens on Sunday in Round 21 of the Victorian Premier League.

2012 premiers Dandenong Thunder extended their lead at the helm to ten points with a 3-0 win away to Green Gully while Northcote City, Richmond, Southern Stars and Moreland Zebras all picked up victories in the remaining games.

Oakleigh Cannons 0
Northcote City 2 (Kalifatidis 8', 41' pen)
Jack Edwards Reserve

Northcote City secured their place in the finals with a strong win over a rather poor Oakleigh Cannons on Friday night. James Kalifatidis increased his goal-tally for this season to nine with a first-half brace. Despite the loss Oakleigh remain in second place; only two points above Bentleigh Greens in third.

Richmond 2 (Visevic 77, Cahill 88')
Melbourne Knights 0
Kevin Bartlett Reserve

Still with a sniff of finals football, Richmond went into their game with the Melbourne Knights needing a win and other results to go their way. The Eagles got the three points thanks to a wonderful free-kick by Daniel Visevic and a late goal from Tom Cahill. But in the end it wasn't enough to keep their chance of finals football alive, with Northcote's win over Oakleigh making it impossible for Richmond to secure a top-five finish.

Green Gully Cavaliers 0
Dandenong Thunder 3 (R. Vargas OG 37', Foster 70', 80')
Green Gully Reserve

Dandenong Thunder proved far too strong for a 10-man Green Gully side on Saturday afternoon, with the newly crowned Premiers coming out 3-0 winners. Former Melbourne Victory defender Rodrigo Vargas scored a comical own-goal to give Dandenong the lead just minutes after his brother, Andy, was sent-off for a headbutt. The Cavaliers were able to contain the Thunder up until the 70th minute when Nate Foster scored his 10th goal of the season before adding another just ten minutes later to cap off the win.

Southern Stars 2 (Hesketh OG 61', Gutler 87')
Hume City 1 (Leech 18')
Kingston Heath Soccer Complex

Southern Stars pulled off a brilliant come-from-behind win to end Hume City's chances of a spot in the finals. Hume took the lead through former Stars player Mark Leech after just 18 minutes, and held onto their lead going into the break. But an own-goal by Steven Hesketh gave Stars an equaliser just after the hour mark, and it went from bad to worse for Hume as Isiyan Erdogan was shown a second yellow card. Southern Stars capitalised on their advantage to score a winner with just three minutes left to end Hume's season in dramatic fashion.

Moreland Zebras 4 (Kaya 2', 59', Papadimitriou 77', 89')
Heidelberg United 1 (Alexovski 44')
Epping Stadium

Former Melbourne Victory midfielder Grant Brebner celebrated his first win as a manager with his Moreland Zebras trouncing Heidelberg United 4-1 on Sunday afternoon. Ersin Kaya put the Zebras ahead inside two minutes before Saso Alexovski equalised right on the stroke of half-time. But Kaya restored Moreland's lead on the hour mark, before James Papadimitriou added a third and fourth goal in the last fifteen minutes to round off the big win.

South Melbourne 1 (Vlahos 78')
Bentleigh Greens 1 (Bulloch 90+4')
Lakeside Stadium

With so much promise and expectation in the lead-up to the 2012 season, it's fair to say South Melbourne's campaign has been nothing but a massive disaster. With South 1-0 up and just seconds remaining on Sunday evening at Lakeside, their finals hopes were set to remain alive going into the last round of the season. But up steps Scott Bulloch with an equaliser in the fourth minute of added time, and there goes any chance of a finals appearance for South Melbourne in 2012. Not many people would have predicted that going into Round One.

I think Foster is more associated with Canadian soccer? Regardless, Sherbon and Foster's combined tally is just one goal short of South's total output.

Oakleigh disposed of Gully far too easily on Sunday. I think they are a chance against the Thunder. It'll be a great game for sure. I still believe they will meet in the final.

Prediction and ladder

Bentleigh Greens - agressive recruiting, taking Thunders best
Thunder - Look impressive, recruited some handy players and have some young talent as well

Northcote - quiet achievers
South - Thereabouts but really only filling numbers
Green Gully - Lost their no 1 keeper, expect them to start slow and then bring back Dobbo
Oakleigh - Will struggle with the coach they currently have
Hume - Havent heard much
Melb Knights - rebuilding underway
Pascoe Vale - Will do ok for 1st year
Port Melb - good to see them back but may struggle
Richmond - Relegation
Southern Stars - Gone before the season kicks off

Lots of average teams in the VPL this year.

Green Gully 0-3 South Melbourne

Great start to the season from our lads, could have won by 5-6...knocked the ball around beautifully, Gully were insipid though, and we even missed a penalty.

Good win to South, goals to Norton Gasparis and Van Eeken.
Gaspar was very good and i like Luke Byles down back. Not a bad crowd for a gully game either.
