I've just been through this whole topic's posts.

And yes Puzo is fantastic, I went through his whole collection. Apart from "The Godfather", "The Sicilian" is also great, as is "Omerta".

I can't believe no one has mentioned the "A Song of Ice and Fire" series. I dared my girlfriend to read the first book "A Game of Thrones" so she would stop paying me out. She became obsessed and read the whole series before I could even finish it. Pretty much same has happened with a few mates and make dinner conversations argumentative...go give George R.R. Martin's books a read I highly recommend.

I've also got a soft spot for Ken Follet's "The Pillars of the Earth"

Haven't been much of a reader. Only read 2 books cover-to-cover in my life until about 3 weeks ago: Moneyball and Gordon Ramsay's autobiography.

But picked up John Grisham's latest Calico Joe. Such an easy and enjoyable read, although as a baseball fan it was incredibly off-putting how ridiculously good the [fictional] title character's achievements are.

Then walked into bookshop wanting to read novels I never bothered to in high school. Wanted to pick up Brave New World and Animal Farm, walked out with 1984 instead. Loved it. Can't wait to get to the other two.

I'm almost finished The Innocent Man by John Grisham. Start off liking the police and hating the main character, then things are inverted soon after. Knowing it's a true story makes it all the more shocking. The parochialism however, does not surprise.

Don't know how you can read 1984 in one sitting Maxey. The second last chapter (I think) where it's pretty much just the excerpt from the handbook put me to sleep.

Chris Paolini is doing book signings at Dymocks in Garden City in a weeks time. Keen, shame there's no one else to go with. Also, should probably read Inheritence a bit more :P

Awesome book. I agree, it's amazing how much your opinion of the people changes as you're reading it.

I'm like that with books. As soon as I get into a book, I can't stop reading. Helps that I've read that book a few times as well though.

Whilst at Supanova I picked up World War Z, which was an awesome pick up but the down side was that as a "free" gift for purchasing from the Dymocks stand i got given the first 2 books in the "True Blood series".

These books read like a mills and boon with Vampires. I guess for Free I'll read them but I don't think they're a book better than a TV series; which the TV series isn't that great either.

I did however pick up more Walking dead and the Boondock Saints Trade paperback the secret history of il Doce.

Finished The Litigators by John Grisham. Apparently not one of his better works. So many out to chastise Grisham for publishing a somewhat light-hearted legal novel. I thought it was entertaining with a good mix of serious plot and humour.

Starting to read his more serious work. Just finished The Firm this evening. Awesome story. Love these legal thrillers.

Perhaps I wasn't clear. I already own it but can't find it anywhere. i've looked in all the logical places, in the book case, in the stacks, on the popular shelves, in the suitcase, in the daughters bookcase. I now need more lateral thinking places that it could be.

Yeah, my wife usesthem, I often use Fishpond as i like the suspense of when an item will turn up. it could be in a few days it could be 6 months. Who knows!

Personally when it comes to the great authors though, I like to hit up the secondhand book stores, there's somethign about buying a great book that has been well loved, looked after and read.

John Dies at the End by David Wong. He's one of my fave writers from Cracked.com so I thought it'd be good. So stupid and hilarious. Can't wait to see the film version when it's released.

If anyone is into horror, I highly recommend Teatro Grottesco by Thomas Ligotti.

I like to call it psychological horror, because it really captures someone's twisted dreams/nightmares in such a perfect way. You get the same sense when reading it, as you would with a nightmare or dream, of which it seems real, but there are extreme oddities as well.

I could go on forever about him, even though I only discovered him a few months ago.
If you are a horror buff, you will love it!

There's some good football books that've come out recently.
I just finished Football Manager Stole My Life, loved it, definitely worth a read if you're a fan of the game.
About halfway through I Am The Secret Footballer, it's really interesting, I'm convinced it's Andy Johnson but Dave Kitson also sounds very likely.

Search out Niall Quinn's autobiography - great read (even if your not a Sunderland fan).

Also, Peter O'Toole's 'Loitering with Intent' - fantastic story of his early acting career. Quite obviously out of his head whilst writing but comes across as a beautiful rambling memoir.

Nice choices

I dunno if you are a AFL fan but I don't think you have to be to enjoy the book written by Jim Stynes that has now come out

I thought it was brilliantly written, very honest - you do get to feel exactly what he went through

Wonderland avenue: the story of Danny Sugarman who was a wild kid who became a friend of Jim Morrison and the Doors and ended up a Junky who managed Iggy Pop before Bowie saved him. A most excellent biography.

Marching Powder: the story of a Drug Smuggler arrested and convicted to surve time in a South American Prison.

Redemption Song: the definitive story of Joe "John Mellor" Strummer

Red Army/Men in Black: the story of Tony O'Neil and the infamous Red Army

Casuals: the definitive Story of Casual Culture and Terrace Fashion

How To Make Gravy: Paul Kelly, in his own words. If you can find it, you can also get a CD collection of his 100 songs played live and in concert that inspired the book.

Street Fighting years: Tariq Ali talks of his years as a young radical and of his involvement with John and yoko.

Woodstock Nation: Abi Hoffman memoir of his time at Woodstock (he's the bloke Pete Towesend smashed in the back of the head for jumping up on stage)

Malinche's Conquest- The story of the women sold into slavery who became the translator and later wife of Hernadez Cortes whose skill as a translator was the direct reason that Cortes was able to destroy the Great "Aztec" empire

I'm a half assed soccer fan, I'd much prefer to be playing it than watching it. As far as AFL goes there was a phase in my life that I was a big Crows fan but now I couldn't care less.

I admire Stynes though. Thanks for the suggestion.
