"Community fixtures will return with games in Dunedin, Launceston and Campbelltown."

It's pretty disappointing that we won't have our own regional match, again!

I would have thought it would have been a perfect opportunity to cash in on GCU's demise at least, and get back some of our old supporters and new ones.

It at least would have been good to give the area some football again after taking away their team, and easy to get to for BRFC fans.

Also, Cairns, Townsville, Sunshine Coast....?

Local games kick off pre-season

Brisbane Roar will begin its quest to secure a third consecutive Hyundai A-League Championship with a series of matches against local Brisbane clubs to kick of the pre-season program.

Pre-season matches against local opposition have been a hallmark of Brisbane’s season preparations since the inception of the Hyundai A-League and this season’s matches will prove to be another tough start for the defending champions.

Brisbane Roar General Manager Sean Dobson said the matches would not only provide a crucial start to the club’s season, but also gave the Roar the opportunity to engage directly with the local community.

“We are a football club and preparing our squad to defend its title is paramount,” Dobson said.

“However, as Champions, we also have a duty to engage with the local community to build not only the Brisbane Roar brand, but also that of the league.

“Engaging with the community is extremely important to us and this is the perfect way to kick-off the program for the upcoming season.”

The pre-season campaign will begin at Goodwin Park on Tuesday, July 24 with a match against Brisbane Olympic before moving to Ipswich for a match against an Ipswich select side on August 12.

The next two matches will see Brisbane turn out at Peninsula Power on August 16 and Rochedale Rovers on August 22.

Further pre-season matches will be announced in the coming weeks.

In: Ben Halloran (Gold Coast United), Matt Acton (NYL)

Out: Andrew Redmayne (Melbourne Heart), Issey Nakajima-Farran, Matt Mundy (released – Rochedale Rovers)

So Mundy is definitely gone, and Action as I thought, will make the step up as Roar's number 2 this season.

Dont see the three loses as too big. Redmayne has the quality to be a number 1, its a pity he had Theo in front of him though.

Would really like us to make some big signings.

Also, would really love to get down to the Rochedale game, but will see how we go.

JHC! I was so pleased to note that they could spell Peninsula Power and then they do that.

Edit: Aw crap they stuffed it up in draw too. Peninsular Power

Dont bite my head off guys just here to ask a question; why was Ange so reluctant to sign a marquee at Roar? I remember he wouldnt offer McKay a marquee deal when he bcame available. Now that MVFC have lost our marquee, do you think Ange will actually go and sign another one?

He didn't need one really. I think any marquee signing would only have been for reasons of vanity

ange has said in the past that he chose the players he did to bring into the roar because they all had a point to prove, like he did. Players like Paartalu, Broich, Theo and later Berisha. He looked to players that would fit and accept the style of play the Roar played and he refined it to the level we saw over the last couple of seasons.

When ange signed for the Victory he said he will not do the same things he did with Brisbane. Victory and Melbourne people are different in their expectations of their team from the Brisbane public and fans. The Victory are the true glamour club of the league and the fans expect them to have the biggest names and to be successful. In my opinion ange is going to have to marry a marquee into the Victory he wants to be successful in the eyes of the Melbourne Victory fans and Board.

Here is our squad for next season:

Theoklitos
Acton
Halloran
Berisha
Smith
Murdocca
Proia
Nichols
Broich
Stefanutto
Paartalu
Brattan
Henrique
Franjic
Jurman
Meyer
Visconte
Danning
Hingert
Fitzgerald - YOUTH CONTRACT
Brown - YOUTH CONTRACT
Lambadaridis - YOUTH CONTRACT

So we have 18 spots filled (plus 3 Youth Positions filled) and no marquee players. So this means we have five spots left including 2 visa spots.

I think Ange just never felt we needed a marquee. He always believed the squad we have could do the job and couldnt really find a Marquee for the system and culture of the club. Its a bit of a mystery on the Mckay front, not sure why he never really wanted to sign him on that one, but i think it might have something to do with Matt wanting to play overseas.

Isnt Henrique now an Australian, so he wouldnt take up a visa spot?

Roar players chosen for AFC U-22 qualifiers
Five Brisbane Roar players have been selected to represent Australia in the AFC Under-22 Championship qualifiers which will be played in Indonesia next month.

Corey Brown, James Donachie, Nick Fitzgerald, Jason Geria and Anthony Proia all impressed in this month’s training camp in Brisbane and have been chosen in Head Coach Paul Okon’s final 23-player squad.

“Our recent training camp in Brisbane was very positive and gave us a good indication on the level of the players,” said Okon.

“This tournament will be a tough challenge for the boys with five matches to be played in ten days.

“Fitness will be a key factor in dealing with the frequency of matches and the hot and humid conditions we will encounter in Indonesia.”

The Qantas Young Socceroos will assemble in Sydney on Sunday 1 July before departing for Pekanbaru, Sumatra, Indonesia on Monday 2 July.

The Qantas Young Socceroos will play five matches in ten days against fellow Group E nations Indonesia (5 July), Macau (7 July), Singapore (10 July), Timor Leste (12 July) and Japan (15 July).

The top two teams from Group E and the best third placed team of all groups (total 15) will then progress to the AFC U-22 Championship which will be played in January 2014.

I know Smith is becoming a citizen at the end of the year, so at least half way through the season we'll have another visa spot open.
Showing my ignorance, why is everyone saying the Adnan is gone already? I thought that was just speculation and I haven't heard/seen anything confirming or denying it. I agree we need someone faster in the defence, although I wouldn't be surprised (don't attack me) if Rado dropped Eric into CB to allow for Brattan, Nichols and Broich to all play together.

I've been speaking to one of the heads of my former Football club with which Jeff Hopkins originally coached at following his retirement from professional football, and with who, until his recent appointment as assistant coach, was a coach of the dinosaur league. Jeff was speaking to said head, and apparently now him and Rado have been given the task as "heads" of the whole Bakrie Football group, and are now touring around the other 3 clubs to see how their training and game play is implemented etc. and to make improvements where they see fit.

tl;dr, Rado and Jeff are now head coaches of Bakrie group, as well as Brisbane Roar.

Smith doesn't take up a visa spot. Supposedly Adnan has been offered a 3 year deal but he hasn't accepted yet and Rado is looking for a new CB according to the Courier mail. I'd like too see a fast CB from either Korea or Japan so that we don't get killed on the counter.

Last time I checked, Smith was a British citizen, why is it he doesn't occupy a visa spot?
I agree, a fast defender would be a good addition to the squad for the ACL. In my opinion our 2 real weaknesses are the left fullback and up front. Stef is getting old and we don't have a natural left wing back. Hingert is a good player, but it's not his natural position and he might struggle to start with. And while there's no denying Berisha's ability, unless Proia is some kind of brilliant, we don't have a suitable back up, competitor or strike partner. Bes does what he does well, but as the Asian league showed we can't always play our way through opponents to give it to him deep in the box, which is where he's lethal. Beyond there he hasn't proved his worth, although this could have been from Ange's stringent orders. And a little competition for his starting spot can only help.
Yes, I know people are going to say Nichols can be frustratingly inconsistent, but we've got enough talented midfielders to account for him.

Smith has dual-citizenship.

I dont understand the hate on Adnan, He really only gets found out for speed in the ACL but he more than makes up for it with some key tackles and so on.

It's not hate. It's the fact our defense was incredibly slow in the ACL, I want us to get a faster defender and because he is out of contract that's the way it goes.

True, but sometimes Adnan makes key tackles, you dont just get rid of a guy who is able to make key tackles. Plus, hes one of the calmest lads on the field, and that is a crucial thing for a defensive player.

Having someone with that much pace at the back would be brilliant if it was a wing back. Would add an extra dimension to our attacking style of play and be perfect for tracking back, not sure it would suit a centre back role.

The thing with centre backs, if you look at all the best around the world, they dont have pace, Vidic, Ferdinand, Terry, Cahill, Kompany, Pique, Puyol etc.... They just brilliant at positioning and timing tackles.

Yeah that's true, but we need someone with some intense pace at the back. We were killed on the counter in the ACL.
