The thing with centre backs, if you look at all the best around the world, they dont have pace, Vidic, Ferdinand, Terry, Cahill, Kompany, Pique, Puyol etc.... They just brilliant at positioning and timing tackles. Yeah that's true, but we need someone with some intense pace at the back. We were killed on the counter in the ACL. i think our problem in the ACL was we were not clinical enough and couldnt match it in the midfield. We created chance after chance after chance, but just dont have that killer striker up front and our midfield cant match it in the ACL, that slow passing tempo and always slowing things down when going forward. For me our problem was not the defence, but our midfield and our strikers.

Ive been calling for us to buy that striker for some time, but unfortunately i dont see that happening.

Who knows something and Proia. Unless something out of the blue happens, he'll be Bes' understudy this season. Could you imagine if we managed to lure Smeltz? Never happen, but still they'd be scoring goals like Gimli and Legolas killed Orcs.

Quote:Roar four to face World Champions Four Brisbane Roar players have been chosen in the Westfield Matildas squad who face a mean task in tackling FIFA Women’s World Cup winners Japan in next week’s friendly in Tokyo.
All four players are currently playing for overseas clubs during the Westfield W-League off-season but Laura Alleway (Lincoln Ladies), Brooke Spence (Colorado Rapids), Tameka Butt (Boston Breakers) and Emily Gielnik (Liverpool) will join Head Coach Tom Sermanni’s 18-player squad ahead of the clash at Tokyo’s National Stadium.
The match marks the first time Australia has played the World Champions since their 1-0 loss in September last year.
“With only an 18 player squad it’s about finding the right combination of players for the match we have ahead of us,” Sermanni said.
“Japan are an extremely difficult team on home soil and are World Champions so they will be in peak form for this match.
“In saying that we will be bringing some of our internationally based players in for this match which will strengthen key areas for us in what will surely be an exciting match.”
While Alleway, Butt and Spence have 44 caps between the three of them, Gielnik, who earned the tag ‘super sub’ in last year’s Westfield W-League season, will earn her first national team cap if she appears against Japan next week.
The game will serve as a key component in Japan’s preparation for the London 2012 Olympic Games.
The match will be streamed live via ABC and FFA websites with the full match shown on ABC 1 from 11.30pm on Wednesday, 11 July.
Westfield Matildas v Japan Wednesday, 11 July 2012 Local kick off: 5.10pm (6.10pm AEST) National Stadium, Tokyo

Quote:Tokyo time a learning curve for Vidosic 10-day visit to the home of AFC Champions League opponents FC Tokyo has given Brisbane Roar Head Coach Rado Vidosic plenty of food for thought as he prepares for the beginning of his club’s pre-season regime next week. Over the home and away legs of their ACL campaign, Tokyo comfortably beat the Hyundai A-League Champions 2-0 and 4-2 with Brisbane failing to register a win in their first ever foray into the continental competition earlier this year. Vidosic, also a guest at Head Coach Ranko Popovic’s home throughout his stay in Japan, was immersed in the thick of the action and couldn’t be more appreciative of the time he spent in the Japanese city. The Roar boss was a regular at FC Tokyo’s training sessions, watched two of the club’s regular season fixtures and acknowledged a couple of late nights spent with his J-League counterpart doing match preparation and analysis. “I stayed with Ranko while I was there so I had lots of opportunities to talk to him about football,” Vidosic said. “It was good to see that Ranko’s thinking and my thinking was very similar. “He allowed me to go onto the pitch and see close up how they work and gave me the opportunity to speak to the players.” Tokyo, who currently sit 8th out of 18 teams, are in the midst of their J-League campaign and Vidosic was especially interested in the balance of their training program and the operational side of managing their playing roster. “From a coaching point of view, it was a good experience for me to see how a Japanese club operates, what the difference is between us and them and how they run their programs,” he said. “It’s also interesting to see how they prepare for game day. “They had a weekend game, a midweek game and another weekend game - the second game was a rescheduled one because of the Champions League. “They’re in the middle of their transfer window and they’ve got quite a few injured players so there was a lot of talk about how to deal with the injury crisis. “They were signing new players and to be able to see how they operate from that point of view was also really good.” But Vidosic also used the time in Tokyo as a means of developing a new plan of attack for the Roar’s second ACL campaign, which will kick off in February next year. Brisbane lost three and drew three of their group stage games in 2011 but the Croatian-born coach was confident more regular exposure to Asian football was the key to unlocking success in the Champions League. “Although it’s good to visit clubs in Europe, I think it’s very important that we visit clubs in the J-League, K-League and the Chinese Super League because they’re our opponents,” Vidosic said. “It’s important we get to know them a little bit better, not just from TV, but by spending a bit of time in their country in their clubs.” It’s unclear whether a formal relationship will develop between the Roar and the J-League club but what is clear is the strength of the friendship between Vidosic and Popovic as the former embarks on his first full season as Head Coach. “It could just be a coaching information exchange or player exchange or it could just be more help from them, given they are older than us and have a bit more experience,” he said. “There is so much from a club’s point of view that we can learn from Japanese clubs - it was really eye-opening.” Before returning to Brisbane for pre-season, Vidosic jetted off to Belgium on Friday, where he joined up with Roar General Manager Sean Dobson and assistant coaches Ken Stead and Jeff Hopkins. The Australian club contingent are currently visiting sister club Cercle Sportif Visé with representatives from other Bakrie Group clubs Pelita Jaya (Indonesia) and Indonesia Futbol S.A.D. (Uruguay). The Brisbane Roar squad will return to training next Monday, 9 July. http://www.footballaustralia.com.au/brisbaneroar/news-display/Tokyo-time-a-learning-curve-for-Vidosic/47926

Cahill, #-o he is not even in the Starting team... club or country #-o I think Adnan is very quick, has a huge gate that makes him look slower but he make up ground twice as quick. plus i wouldn't swap his aerial skill, tackling, composure and long pass for an extra yard of pace, no way.. Easily in top 4 or 5 CBs last season, even injured (Thwaite,Sigmond and Zwaanswijk would be up there imo) Fullbacks only look slow cause they face up against speedsters and have to turn and chase which gives attackers a head start. i think it is critical we resign this guy cos i can't see a huge waiting list behind him....

Didn't realize how long we signed Halloran for. Can't believe is Contracted till the end of 2014/15 Season. If he continues to play well we can pick up a very nice transfer fee in a couple of years time.

Agree to an extent, and it does give very good defenders a poor rep. However, I disagree with his long passing. I don't know how many times he needlessly gave away the ball throughout the season. Apparently Jurman is rearing to go, but Adnan still hasn't been confirmed out, it just "continues to look more likely". I'd rather not lose him simply because I can't think of a decent replacement within our reach. Unless Rado pulls one out of the hat again.

I think you would have found that he would have started for ENgland had it not been for injury. he is also a champions league winner and a top class defender, i dont think you can underestimate his usage in the comparisons here...

Don't worry guys the place I was looking didn't have Acton up. So that should leave us with 4 spots with two of those being foreigners.

I can't see us filling both of the foreigner spots as one would have to sit out the ACL, that spot should be filled with a Youth Team player instead. And we need to find an Asian player so that will be our only foreigner signing. Hopefully a speedy attacking player, anyone have any ideas on who Rado may bring in ?

X2 Quote:we Need a decent CB I think Jurman and Hingert will step up this yr. Possibly have Hingert LB and push Steff into CB. Last season Steff would tire towards the end of the game because he was making alot of runs down the line but is still very solid defender and Hingert looked great going forward when he come on. Possibly even have Donachie play more matches in the first team. He looked very good in his debut and he captained the U19's the other day.

I like the look of Donachie , but im not a fan of Stef or Jurman tbh , i want hingert to be our 1st choice LB this season but i doubt he will be . We Have a few international spots so why not try and recruit an experienced CB ?

And all of the Aussie CB's seem to be going to Asia and none coming this way. I think we should just stick with what we have and give Donachie a go, he could be great or terrible but look what happened to Good at Heart. Gets given a go and nek minut Premier League.

If one of them were to go down with injury and if we had no other choice we could put Paartalu there and put Brattan at CDM.

It's official. Quote:Brisbane Roar elevate goalkeeper Matt Acton to A-League squad RADO Vidosic has shown faith in his club's production line by promoting goalkeeper Matt Acton to the Brisbane Roar's A-League squad. Following the departure of Andrew Redmayne to Melbourne Heart at the conclusion of the club's AFC Champions League campaign, Acton signed a two-year senior contract, keeping him at the Roar until the end of the 2013-14 season. The Yound Socceroos custodian has been a revelation for the Roar's youth team but was stranded behind Redmayne and No.1 glovemen Michael Theoklitos. He now has a chance repay coach Vidosic's faith and press Theoklitos for a spot in the starting XI. "I moved down expecting to play QAS for a couple of years and then maybe Brisbane Premier League," the Townsville product said. "To be given this opportunity is just amazing - I never imagined being in an A-League team or being a professional footballer so I'm loving it." http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/soccer/brisbane-roar-elevate-goalkeeper-matt-acton-to-a-league-squad/story-e6frfg8x-1226422558646
