Vidosic welcomes long off-season
The A-League's long off-season has come as a godsend for Brisbane Roar, which has been hit by a massive injury toll with seven weeks until the start of the season.

Other coaches have complained about the long period of competitive inactivity but Rado Vidosic is certainly not one of them.

Brisbane is counting the cost of an injury and sickness toll that has frustrated Vidosic, who will be leading the two-time champion for the first time after Ange Postecoglou's departure to Melbourne Victory.

"I am frustrated as any coach would be to have five or six players out," Vidosic said.

"But these things can happen and there is no reason to lose any sleep over it also because the long off-season has actually been a blessing in disguise for us.

"By the time we play our first match in Perth on 5 October, I should have all my players fit and ready to go unless somebody else gets injured.

"Thomas Broich and new boy Do Dong-hyun have rolled an ankle and both are out of action.

"Mitch Nichols is recovering from minor ankle surgery which he had to have in the off-season because of club and national commitments, James Meyer is doing his rehabilitation after minor adductor surgery and should be ready in September while Ben Halloran is sick with the flu.

"If the off-season was shorter all these players might not have been ready for the first round of competition.

"These injuries also give our fringe players an opportunity to get more game time in trials and show us how far they have developed."

Meyer said he too was glad for the long off-season.

"The longer pre-season has given us a great opportunity to get our bodies right and work on Rado's new structures," he said.

"Personally the extra time will allow me to work through a rehabilitation program after groin surgery.

"Hopefully I can be at peak fitness in the opening rounds of the season."

Unavailability of players aside, Vidosic said he was still chasing a centre-back to fill the considerable void left by Bahrain international Mohamed Adnan, who left the club after one season to be with his family in the Gulf.

"We are finalising negotiations with a young foreign defender who we will try to develop," Vidosic said.

"He has played for his country at under-19 level.

"Now that Adnan is no longer with us I would like to have three centre-backs vying for two spots in our standard 4-3-3 formation.

"At the moment we have Matt Smith and Matt Jurman filling those two roles.

"Apart from the foreigner, we are also looking at two of our youth league team players."

The six-month off-season has prompted calls for nine extra rounds in the A-League or the introduction of a knockout FFA Cup as a means of minimising the period of inactivity.

Football Federation Australia, however, has said that "finding longer-term certainty around broadcast rights" was its priority.

From The World Game site.
Not quite what I was wishing for in our new signing, but we'll see. Rado's been an excellent scout to date.

Yea I posted that up yesterday. I would of preferred a CB with some more experience but at least we are getting someone.

I'm fairly certain it's this guy.

Quite surprised we have gotten 3/4 of a page in the courier mail today. Mainly about our new assistant and Jurman but it also looks like our GK coach is leaving.

Brisbane Roar lay out welcome-back mat for Jurman

FORGOTTEN man Matt Jurman will be given first shot at replacing departed centre-back Mohamed Adnan despite Brisbane Roar planning to add to their defensive stocks.

Roar coach Rado Vidosic is talking to an overseas defender who has represented his country at under-19 level.

But Vidosic has told 22-year-old Jurman that Adnan's spot "is his" following the Bahraini international's decision not to return to the A-League after a stellar season with the two-time champions.

Former Olyroo Jurman started last season as the preferred partner to Roar skipper Matt Smith in the heart of Brisbane's defence.

A combination of representative duties and a dip in form by Jurman gave Adnan the chance to cement a starting spot and the former Sydney FC young gun was reduced to a bit-part player by the end of the season.

"I was disappointed about not playing in the second half of the year, but that's football. Hopefully this year's a bit different for me," Jurman said.

"Mo (Adnan) put in a few good performances while I was overseas (with the Australian under-23 team) and it dampened my season.

"It was hard for me but I tried to adapt as best as I could. As a player I improved and that's the main thing.

"Rado expects big things of me this year and I expect big things of myself as well."

Vidosic said Jurman's tough Roar initiation could prove a blessing in disguise as the team tries for a hat-trick of A-League titles.

"From our point of view, he's really hungry now," Vidosic said. "I had a talk to him and said that we are bringing players to be a back-up for him, not to replace him.

"Matt is quite a tough cookie. He has responded really well."

Jurman, who will start for the Roar in tonight's trial against Peninsula Power at AJ Kelly Field, is entering the final season of his Brisbane deal but said he hoped to sign a contract extension.

The Roar are searching for a new goalkeeper coach, with Fernando vaz Alves to take up a position with the Australian Institute of Sport.

Leading contenders are former Everton gloveman Jason Kearton and national under-17 mentor John Gorza.

Welshman Jeff Hopkins and Brisbane Roar see eye to eye

MOST would think the journey from the coastal Welsh city of Swansea to Queensland's capital would provide a dramatic change of scenery.

But for new Brisbane Roar assistant coach Jeff Hopkins, the football landscapes are so similar he feels right at home.

Recruited in June by Roar coach Rado Vidosic to a backroom left thin by Ange Postecoglou's defection to Melbourne Victory, Hopkins could not have been better placed.

The former Fulham and Reading defender hails from a region known for its attractive football, much like the Roar.

After 16 years in British football, he played two seasons in Malaysia alongside former Socceroo Mehmet Durakovic, who convinced Hopkins to bring his family to Australia in 1999.

Fortunately for Hopkins, the philosophy the Roar has employed in the past two title-winning seasons matches his own.

"My philosophy and views on the game are very similar, and I guess that's why I was brought in," Hopkins said.

"If it was 100 miles away from the philosophy of Rado and the club it would have been a bad match, but I think I see the game pretty similar."

While Vidosic is easing Hopkins into his own former role, the typically hands-on approach of Brisbane assistants means the 16-time capped Welshman will likely shoulder plenty of responsibility.

"I've spoken to Rado and he wants to make sure I understand exactly how he wants things done, and gradually I'll be more and more involved," Hopkins said.

Friendships inspire Power match

For Brisbane Roar skipper Matt Smith, there will a couple of very familiar faces at the club’s third pre-season hit-out against Peninsula Power at AJ Kelly Park on Thursday night.

Brisbane Premier League club Peninsula is jointly coached by Warren Moon and Scott MacNicol, both former Brisbane Strikers teammates and good friends of Smith from his days playing in the Queensland State League.

Both have taken on player-coach roles at the Power and after guiding their club to the top of the BPL courtesy of a 6-0 drubbing of North Pine last weekend, Moon and MacNicol will now face the challenge of toppling the Hyundai A-League Champions, including their great mate.

“They’re my best friends over here,” Smith said.

“They were both invited to my wedding and I’d say we email, text or call each other every day.

“We talk about everything and football especially – from coaching, playing, Australian football and the European leagues.

“I always look forward to playing these pre-season games and it is extra special when you have a connection like that.”

Despite playing in Sunday’s 5-1 win over Ipswich Invitational, Brisbane Roar Head Coach Rado Vidosic has alluded he may re-call Smith for the match against the local ladder leaders.

Whether he features or not, Smith was confident his friends would provide the Roar with a staunch test on the football field.

“This is their first coaching job but they’ve both played at a high level,” he said.

“Warren was part of the Roar squad in year one and Scott is from Melbourne but has played in Scotland.

“I’d say they’re very modern coaches, very hands-on and like to play technical-based football - or as much as you can with a semi-professional team.

“They’re top of the league at the moment so they must be doing something right!”

But no matter what happens on the pitch on Thursday night, Smith knows he can still count on the support of Moon and MacNicol come Hyundai A-League time and the duo can expect the same of him throughout the local season.

“Both Warren and Scott come and support me at all our A-League games,” the Brisbane captain said.

“They were at the Grand Final and they bring their kids to each game.

“So in turn, I’m a keen spectator of their games when we’re in our off-season, I like going down to see how they’re going.”

Prior to his Hyundai A-League break, Smith spent three years with the Strikers and one season with Palm Beach on the Gold Coast.

As a former local player, the Roar’s pre-season fixture list brings back a host of memories for Smith and he encouraged the local players to make the most of it.

“I still have a lot of friends who play in a lot of different teams in the local league,” he said.

“When I was playing there, I always looked forward to playing against the Roar and I really hope they enjoy playing us as well.

“Plenty of footballers come from the local leagues, some get scouted early but others are like me who just needed that one chance a bit later in their career.

“Who knows? At one of these games, we might find a player suited to our squad or our youth team.”

And as for Smith’s pre-game preparation this week?

“We’re actually all going over to Scott’s tomorrow afternoon for an Ekka barbeque!” he said.

It's really not. 10 years of living here..they've modernised the interior, but the people - the people! I step foot in the centre maybe 3 times a year.
