I can understand the justification for lower crowds midweek, but shouldnt the opposite apply for TV ratings ie - people are more likely to stay at home?

Or am I to understand that people who work are less likely to go to the game but less likely to be at home?

Good questions. Not sure of the answers but my understanding is that ratings aren't particularly good midweek. Maybe Skeptic has some figures. Do the women control the channel changer midweek? ;)

The women threaten the men, the men simulate being hit, drop to the floor and roll around feigning pain while clutching at their face with the fingers of the hands open slightly to enable a sneaky look and see that the women have sat down in front of the tele with remote in hand and precede to flick the channels.

For some unknown reason, during week days, when aleague fans are far more likely to be home and there's little other live sport to choose on tele, they are less likely to watch the aleague.

It's contrary to to nrl. Their Monday night games are very often the highest rated fox nrl telecast of the week, which is normal for tele viewing as the weekends generally have lower ratings. Obviously, when people are more likely to out doing what ever they do on weekends.

'Their a weird mob' is a very apt description. BTW, last night's ch9 cricket rated close to 1.5 mill.

Overall though, I have noticed a fall off on the free advertising that FoxSports were giving us earlier in the year. Given that the 2 bling teams (MV and SFC) are struggling, and the value of their big singings has been less than maximised so far, their priorities seem to have shifted.

51K isn't too bad though.

Part of the "problem" comes down to this most basic of issues; the signings of Emerton and Kewell were expected to supercharge the league and momentum was meant to built from there (well, I'm guessing that's what most people were assuming anyway). Of course, Kewell didn't tear it up straight away (and nobody in mainstream media was going to run with the whole "Kewell says the standard is better than he expected" angle for too long), and the Victory have had their obvious problems all season. And Sydney have been virtually invisible with their intermittently pragmatic/hopeless style of play. Without these two, ahem, glamour teams being front-runners, the league as a whole will probably struggle for airspace no matter what the season.

What hasn't helped either was the Roar's fall from grace the instant they broke the unbeaten streak record, hence there's been no potential angle or point of interest here to cover anymore.

Given its perpetual marginal status, soccer needs a "hook" for it to stand out in the crowded landscape; and with all the bigger capital city/market teams having flat periods at the moment there's little in terms of interest to generate and potentially spike tv audiences.

As with all other sports, things will improve when the finals begin, or are imminent. For the immediate future though there could be some worrying audiences/crowds as dead rubbers begin to pile up over the next few weeks as it becomes clear that some teams won't make the Top 6 or, conversely, have a lock on the Top 2 slots.

Nice solid grouping of figures, the derby ratings are little disappointing imo and interesting to see the postmatch rated so highly.

The Melbourne Dery didn't exactly set the viewers running to turn onto the game. Pity.

Oerall though, with 50K+ on most matches, its still a good result.

That's it ... the HAL is doomed. We should shut up the league and start watching cricket, AFL & NRL.

Funny thing is, I've been to all 3 Derbies and, with each one, the media-attention before & after the game has been increasing; the crowds have been increasing and the most important barometer - the passion in the pubs & streets before the game has been increasing.

The ratings for the A-League are up significantly across the board from previous seasons, I think the one thing we can be sure of is that the H-AL will never be on SBS...now a cup comp is an altogether different matter entirely.

You may have the patience to find the articles re ( i don't) the bolded comment. As far as a i remember it was published following the first month of this season when it was stated the average ratings had risen by 60% on the previous season. If i remember correctly, to around an overall 60/65k per game average?

The ratings have dropped appreciably since that time, particularly the higher range, but i don't have the inclination to do and sums to see the actual difference.

Now, the ratings have risen and slipped over the previous 6 years, approximately in line with the peaks and troughs of average crowds to lead into this season to begin from an extremely low base.

In a nutshell, the ratings need to be seen to have a trend of appreciable growth that's sustained from year to year, as other's have. They need to follow, not continue to be left behind with the gap increasing, as has happened in the years prior.

Actually the most important barometer are the TV Ratings as they are the ones that will determine what sort of TV deal the sport gets in the future which will pay the bills.

Care to explain why the increased attention has actually led to lower TV ratings?

What I find interesting is that 26,000 will get up off their backside pay decent money and watch the game live in one city, and yet only a bit over twice that will actually flick on a TV station for free in their own home in the entire country to watch the same thing. Yet 20k roll up to a BBL games and 350 k end up watching on TV.

So its in the FFA's interest for these to be as high a possible and in Fox's and FTA's interest for these to be as low as possible, right? As rated by a company that is owned by the networks themselves?

If I remember correctly somewhere I had seen that being exclusively on FOX they expect $3 per viewer.

total audience of 313K this weekend over the 5 games, is $939 000. If this was the average amount of viewers over the course of the season, excluding finals we would see $25 353 000.

So that's before any of the final series games and Socceroos, Olyroos, one-off games (LA Galaxy)

Maybe we can work out what the average rounds cumulative figure is, however either way it should come out nice.

IF the figures of last round were to then be considered as the average, and the ffa was to have 12 teams instead of 10, each team playing 33 rounds. Then we would get a figure off $37 184 400 before any finals etc.

Definitely sounds healthy for a big pay cheque.

How do those ratings compare with previous seasons in the same round?

I say this many times and ill say it again we punch way above our weight with crowd attendances in comparison with tv ratings.

Seems people going to the games isnt the problem but rather we simply need more fans all round.

Having a look it's hard to find viewer data.

However last year's final series had 7 games, a total of 501 000 viewers watch over the all the matches.
204 000 of those for the Grand final.

So just on that comparison the final series averaged 71 600 per game, 49 500 without the GF.
This weekend averaged 62 600 per game. So just comparing that shows that there is a staggering jump from last season to this season on TV ratings.

Last year's average TV ratings were 41 000

Also supposedly this season's average is 67% up from last year.
So expecting that still is correct. This season's average would be 68 470
So using that we get: $27 730 350. For just the a-league regular season!

Keep in mind these figures exclude, All Socceroos, AFC Champions League, Asian Cup, A-league final series and other A-league or Socceroos related games.

Great work Mitsos.
A good analysis, and hopefully a good sign of things to come regarding TV rights.
Also looks like Senator Conroy is gonna protect the FFA by removing the Socceroos games from the Anti Siphoning list.
Not great news for everyone, but from a revenue point of view, it'll mean the FFA can get the maximum value for the rights.
If the projection is correct at between $20-$30m per year for the A-league alone, we could even be in a position to get around the $50 a year mark, when you add in the Finals, Socceroos friendliest and qualifiers and the ACL.

That figure was quoted following the first month's games and accounted for those only. Have a look back through the thread to see the substantial reduction since that time.

I have no idea where you sourced the $3 per viewer theory. If that was even close to correct, being the highest rating league by a large margin for a number of years and with the highest continual growth rate, the NRL's broadcast deal would have dwarfed that of the afl.

I must admit, I've never seen that $3 figure. But I have seen a $2 and $2.50 per viewer figure for Foxtel somewhere.
If it is $2 per viewer, the figures that Mitsos put forward are still around the mark, and are a good guide to go on.
The NRL rights are now in the process, and they will get a smashing deal, regardless if they get what they expect or not, the numbers will be huge.
However, NRL isnt a national sport, it's a 2 state game. It doesn't have the national appeal of the AFL. So not sure what'll happen there.
