Like I said its a guide however the proof is that there is an increase. Last seasons match average was 41000 last weekend was over 60k. Positive irregardless.
The $3 figure I remember from an article which spoke about why the exclusivity was so important to fox sports. Also that if the exclusive part was taken out then it would be alot lower.
Its alot lower. Even so takening Into account all the other games you have 7 final series, 18 acl (just group if Adelaide get through) plus at least 5 Roos Games a year, that's at least 30 higher rating games not taken into account In the figure!

Skeptic, we're all being skeptical here but were trying to find at least a good thing out Of all this

When the deal is done, they will use facts, figures and growth projections. That's all i try to limit myself to as well. The ACL games, btw, have in the past been among the lowest, if not the lowest rating matches of all matches involving an aleague club.

Back on the rise with the conclusion of tennis and big bash.

3 weeks until the winter football codes start. Will be interesting to see what happens then.

Probably more or less the same as what happened during the Big Bash onslaught; we'll lose a few off the top, but retain the 40-60K of diehards that seem to comprise the core of HAL viewership.

Also supposedly this season's average is 67% up from last year.
So expecting that still is correct. This season's average would be 68 470
So using that we get: $27 730 350. For just the a-league regular season!

That figure was quoted following the first month's games and accounted for those only. Have a look back through the thread to see the substantial reduction since that time.

I have no idea where you sourced the $3 per viewer theory. If that was even close to correct, being the highest rating league by a large margin for a number of years and with the highest continual growth rate, the NRL's broadcast deal would have dwarfed that of the afl.

I must admit, I've never seen that $3 figure. But I have seen a $2 and $2.50 per viewer figure for Foxtel somewhere.
If it is $2 per viewer, the figures that Mitsos put forward are still around the mark, and are a good guide to go on.
The NRL rights are now in the process, and they will get a smashing deal, regardless if they get what they expect or not, the numbers will be huge.
However, NRL isnt a national sport, it's a 2 state game. It doesn't have the national appeal of the AFL. So not sure what'll happen there.

You forget that there isn't huge interest in the AFL in NSW or Qld and that these two states make up nearly 53% of the population.

Interesting as there does seem to be a correlation between the two.

I wouldnt have thought so because:
a) Watching the game on TV requires less commitment
b) PayTV is limited to 30% of homes but attendance isnt (Im the only one of 7 who go to games and has payTV)

But there you go.

Omitting Season 1, the ratio of ratings to attendance is close enough to 5:1.

Interestingly the FFA distribution to the clubs generated mainly from the broadcast rights is around $15M pa or between $2.20 per viewer in Season 3 and $2.50 per viewer in Season 6 while the funds generated by attendance at games assuming $15 a ticket is $18M for Season 3 and $20M for Season 6.

A-League Ratings Watch:

BRI v MBV 79k
MHT v GCU 61k
ADU v SFC 53k
CCM v NIX 52k
PER v NUJ 46k

A couple of interesting Tweets I noticed when watching the HAL games ... and this is only Season 7!

1. During BRI v MBV
Francis Leach, who is a staunch AFL man, but has become a football convert and also actively engages with other sports Tweeted

Francis Leach @SaintFrankly
Cracking game (BRI v MBV) #AFL pre-season circus ?? Meh. Like settling for a McMeal .. #wearefootball

2. During ADU v SFC
Phil Rothfield, who is a staunch NRL journo and actively posts negative comments about football & HAL had this to say last night:

Phil Rothfield Phil Rothfield @BuzzRothfield
* Never ever thought I'd turn off the cricket for soccer game. Carn Sydney FC
* the cricket is terrible
* at least it's (ADU v SFC) is a decent contest
* Sydney goalie is outstanding.
* This is actually very exciting. Carn Sydney.

Would've thought Reds v Sydney game would have got more viewers. I'm a bit worried about the softness in the Sydney market. IF/when a West Sydney team comes in will it canibalise existing low viewership or boost it?

I would think the viewing for the Sydney v Adelaide game would be down because of the Adelaide market not the Sydney market. I recall a statement earlier in the season I think by O'Gorman that the Sydney market accounted for 40% of the A-League viewing figures. I thought it a bit high but when you take account of the participation rate, number of registered players (as many as the other states combined) and the fact that Sydney has the highest penetration of PayTV in the country it may be close to correct.

Sydney is ideal for a derby and although a west Sydney team will pinch some of the Sydney FC crowd they will rate well on the box.

All you can ask for is a increas in viewership and we have achieved that this year, if the product continues to improve and we can attract more players like Kewell the ratings will continue to grow. Fox must see the potential is there to really to generate ongoing 100k+ viewers per game given the funds are given to the game to flourish.

I would suggest that Foxtel have made the most money out of football over the past 7 years more than any other sport on foxtel, getting 70k viewers per A league match after paying 15 millon a year for rights is a great deal better than paying 10 times as much in 120 millon a year for a sport that outrates football only 4-1

The AFL drives subscription growth and im sure bigger advertising revenue which is a key for Foxtel.

Quote:
Williams said the market penetration of pay-TV in NSW and Queensland has been as much as 25 to 40 per cent higher than in Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia.

"This is because our coverage of league began eight years before our coverage of the AFL, and even today we still have more games of NRL than AFL each week," he said.

"The value of the latest AFL rights reflects the growth potential for new subscribers in the southern states as well as the growth still available in NSW and Queensland, given the support for the Swans and Lions.

"The total national audience for AFL is bigger than it is for NRL. That's a fact.

"But for the time being there are more league fans that subscribe to Foxtel than AFL fans.

Kim Williams Foxtel CEO.
http://forums.rleague.com/posts/showthread.php?32212-Foxtel-slams-TV-rip-off-claim.

Between them Qld and NSW account for about 55% of the national advertising market and AFL is only a minor player in those states being dwarfed by NRL.

The difference is that Roar attracts the interest because of the great style of game they play whilst Victory it is because of the constant controversy, the circus performance and because it's the comedy club of the A-League with Magilton as the host as we all need a laugh.

Apart from Perth v Brisbane @ 56 k, no other A-league game is in the top 20 on sat or sun.

That's pretty damning statistics. Perth v Brisbane got all the viewers who had finished watching AFL & Rugby!!

The difference is that Roar attracts the interest because of the great style of game they play whilst Victory it is because of the constant controversy, the circus performance and because it's the comedy club of the A-League with Magilton as the host as we all need a laugh.

Imagine if MV stuck to actually playing football?

Disappointing results for all sports.

AFL NAB cup games were attracting 200-250k audience for the 1st 3 games. So St Kilda v Geelong - who are 2 popular teams from Victoria - is a drop of more than 50%! Very interesting - don't thing AFL & Fox would expect that!

Yes, indeed. Much to look forward to if that were the case.

But it will NEVER be the case with the gaffer in charge.

In a resort somewhere

The biggest TV ratings this year all feature MVFC - when we are having a terrible season.

As usual MVFC carries the rest of the HAL.

The NAB Cup games at 3 and 4, and 5 and 6 are round robin games.

Essendon played West Coast for 2 X 20 minute halves, West Coast got off the ground, and Fremantle came on to play Essendon. The ratings were virtually identical for both games. Stand to reason: the same Essendon supporters would stay tuned for the next game (Essendon is one of the biggest clubs in the AFL). The same applies to Melbourne v Brisbane and Gold Coast Melbourne: Melbourne played Gold Coast, Gold Coast got off the ground and then Brisbane came on. Again not surprising the ratings are so similar.

I think this is a spurious way to split what is essentially the same program into two.

Interesting result for Waratahs vs Reds.First game of the season and a big grudge match.Compare that to the first A-League game of the season MVvs SFC which I think was around 130.I wouldn't expect Super Rugby games to draw mutch more.In fact they will probably decline. The sad thing though is that the clear space the A-League had at the start of the season is now about to be swamped by the other codes.TV ratings certainly appear to be on a steady decline.

I would suggest none of the games this weekend were of great interest apart form 2 playing 3 in Perth and that got 56k the rest were not blockbuster type matches. Sydney play Melbourne Victory in a couple of weeks one of our true blockbuster fixtures and you then get a true indicator of the ratings when competing against the eggballs.
