I don't want to hurt his feelings though (even though he had no concern about hurting mine) because a lot of stuff has happened, and I kind of just want him to be okay.

I'm caught between wanting to stay the hell away from him, and completely forget about him, and wanting to see him and talk through everything that never got sorted out. I have no idea what to do.

Because I fell for him once and he hurt me. I don't know if he ever really cared about me, or if it was just a game. I don't know quite what to believe about things that have happened/he's done over the past few months, and I don't want to get involved in something that can only really end badly. I never got the answers I needed from him, but I'm not sure if I want to know the answers anyway.

I wouldn't go back to him. You've got negative history together, those things come back to bite you in the arse no matter how often you think that it's changed for the better.

You can ask him the questions you want to ask, but as far as actually going on with a relationship, I'd avoid it.

All in all I'm more concerned about him getting hurt rather than me. I just feel like I can't do nothing.

He's been out of a relationship for months, and I'm not interested in getting into one with him anyway.

Then it's settled. Don't care about him, he's not your problem, nor your responsibility. You don't have to make sure he's okay or find out some answers, the past is the past so don't get too caught up in it again.

I know he's not my problem, but at the moment he hasn't got a hell of a lot of people on his side, so I'd feel bad if he needed me and I wasn't there for him. Plus, I'm crap at letting the past go.

You've already said you don't like the guy. Sounds to me like you're just in hardcore denial.
