I read through this article eagerly anticipating the Aus v Japan world cup game. I believe this was a defining game in Australian history. Speaking to many, and reading many papers, from overseas about our qualification after our victory against Uruguay. They kept speaking about our pot luck as we won on penalties and Uruguay were overconfident and cocky and probably deserved to lose. They were going on about how we would see the real thing against Asian Champs, World Champs and European powerhouse. And we were down one nil against the Japs and we looked like not getting anything back. But we kept going and in the last ten minutes of the game we scored 3 goals and defied all the odds to knock off the Japs and put ourselves ont he map. It was the game that skeptics in Australia heard about all the time and followed the rest of the campaign. I think it was the game that said, and made everyone realise. "Getting to the World Cup was no fluke"

...not sure about our campaign this time though...

Don't doubt our ability to dig from the ashes my friend.

We have lost one game, isn't Australia's ability to come back from no where our trademark? Meh will progress to the second round...

I too wonder what happened to that game being in the top 10...it was certainly instrumental in the nation's footballing history given that it got us out of the group. How the loss v Italy made it but the win v Japan didn't I will never know.

Oh god no!! Don't roll out that "aussie battler" bullshit, if we were that good, we wouldn't get up shit creek to begin with. It's no different to Lleyton Hewitt.

Well after that letter by Milo in the latest addition, it looks like there is another article by 442 that not everyone agrees on. But i do agree with him, that game v Croatia should definitely be in the top ten. What was at stake at the time and coming back 2 times in that game is special. We were knocked back twice, but got back up, before eventually the message was sent, Australia as a football nation is here and not going anywhere.......

....i smell another article coming along, or maybe not, just throwing it out there.....

I agree that was a very important match. It gave the nation self belief as well.
