I heard Nick Economou discuss this very topic last year. He said Rhodes scholars are to be respected...if they make they don't squander their scholarship. Bob Hawke make the most of his Rhodes scholarship and walked away with a first class degree with his thesis on wage-fixing in Australia, all while making his famous world record. Tony bummed around campus, rubbed people the wrong way, did a bit of boxing and ended up walking away with a third class degree...the kind of degree you give to this guy (pictured below) because of his donor parents. What would Nick Economou know, he never went to Oxford. He only went to 3rd rate unis in Melbourne and London. He's clearly just making shit up, and sounding envious in the process. Using that reasoning; what would you know, neither did you. Quote:You need to be educated AND intelligent to be a Rhodes Schloar. They don't invite morons to Oxford No you don't. Rhodes House wrote:Rhodes selection criteria
The selection criteria, as found in the Will of Cecil Rhodes, govern selection across all Rhodes constituencies. They are:
literary and scholastic attainments energy to use one's talents to the full truth, courage, devotion to duty, sympathy for and protection of the weak, kindliness, unselfishness and fellowship moral force of character and instincts to lead, and to take an interest in one's fellow beings. Basically you just have to have a loud voice, be from the right family and have more money than the other guy. No I didn't go to Oxford, then again I'm not running absurd personal commentaries on sometimes time at an institution I never frequented. If you go to the rhodes scholarships for Australia website, it mentions scholars are chosen on the basis of 'exceptional intellect'. I'll say it again ''exceptional intellect'. You have to be smart to be a Rhodes scholar, it's not like you just send in your resume and they pull your name out of a hat. Maybe at melbourne university.

Why would we have a massive inferiority complex just for comparing ourselves to labor?:-s Clearly we enjoy comparing our record to their recent record because theirs is so terrible and it's fun exploiting your opponents failures and weaknesses. If anything we feel superior to labor folk well because they fuck everything up and leave gigantic messes for the liberals to have to come in and clean up. In regards to batfinks comment he was making the point that the selling off of public assets is historically bipartisan and shouldn't be used as a pejorative against the Abbott government. It was an entirely legitimate point he made, nothing to do with feeling inferior to labor lol.

Seriously dude, no matter what right wing shock jocks tell you, that's simply not the case. Get out amongst these people, hear their stories and you'll learn so quickly how inhumane our government is towards the whole situation. The saddest part is that most of the politicians know better, but they're appealing to the uninformed voter.

Many have been waiting a long time for resettlement, sometimes 15-20 years, but Australia only accepts so many refugees every year ( even under Labor) and in recent years our quota taken out of refugee camps is down due to increased boat arrivals. I get these people have horrible stories and all, but there's 42 million or so who are in a similar plight and we can't help them all. Our politicians know better, and that is their duty is firstly towards its own citizens and country. Do the Congo/Sudan refugees feel our government has been in humane towards them?

We can't help them all but we can help more than we do. Our attitude towards refugees is horrible. We have a shockingly low intake of refugees for a developed country. No they don't. They walked out of the airport when they had a stop over here on a flight between an Israeli refugee camp and labour camp they had been sent to in Fiji. The government has helped them somewhat, but it's mostly been through refugee help organisations that they've found their feet in Australia. However, they are absolutely shocked at the attitude of the government when it comes to 'boat people' and refugees in general.

You and I have different attitudes towards our governments contribution to refugees. I see our overall contribution as being very good. We rank 2nd in he world in terms of resettling refugees per capita and 3rd overall. Although some countries accept higher number of refugees, they are unable to provide for them in any meaningful way and many languish on the streets or in refugee camps in worse conditions than detention centres. They don't get access to education, healthcare, employment or permanent resettlement, so by comparison our treatment or refugees is world class. I suppose it doesn't matter how many we accept or provide as long as we're turning vulnerable people away people will accuse us of being horrible, but the facts don't lie, when it comes to refugees we are amongst the worlds most generous.

Between 93 and 2011 we've permanently resettled over 200,000 refugees, the 3rd highest of any country. After us are Sweden right down the toilet with about 30,000. We could choose not to permanently resettle refugees and therefore artificially inflate our temporary intake but resettlement is by far the more humanitarian deed even though it might not get us as much kudos from the cynical likes of yourself. See once a refugee applicant has been declared a bona fide refugee and granted citizenship they are no longer classified as a refugee for statistical purposes.

See once a refugee applicant has been declared a bona fide refugee and granted citizenship they are no longer classified as a refugee for statistical purposes. Ok, so according to your stated source (link above) and given that from 2001-2012 there were 74,437 applications for asylum from refugees, and Australia has a less than 100% grant rate (It's more like 45% for boat people, and 95% for non-boat arrivals, so let's say 75% approval for arguments' sake) that's around 55,000 people resettling in the country over the last 10 years. So what you're trying to tell me is that either in the previous decade 150,000 immigrants were resettled in Australia and Australia's refugee intake has dropped by a whopping 66% when globally displaced people has increased 22% from 2001 according to UNHCR. Or alternatively that you're wrong again. Let's go with that. Edited by afromanGT: 13/11/2013 12:35:18 AM
