Indonesian newspaper depicts Prime Minister Tony Abbott as a deviant
NATIONAL POLITICAL EDITOR SAMANTHA MAIDEN SUNDAY MAIL (SA) NOVEMBER 23, 2013 6:42PM

TONY Abbott has been depicted as a naked, masturbating, Peeping Tom on the front page of an Indonesian newspaper.

In new nadir for Australian-Indonesian relations after revelations the Rudd government bugged political leaders' phones, the Prime Minister has been lampooned in a respected newspaper.

The Rakyat Merdeka depicts Mr Abbott masturbating in front of an open door marked Indonesia saying, "Ssst! Oh My God Indo ... So Sexy."

Mr Abbott is sweating, with his shorts at half mast and is wearing Australian flag underpants.

A spokesman for Mr Abbott had no comment on the cartoon last night.

Protesters burned Australian flags in Jakarta last week as political leaders expressed outrage at the surveillance.

Mr Abbott confirmed yesterday he has exchanged letters with Indonesia over the spy claims but would not disclose the contents.

It's understood the correspondence does not contain a formal apology.

"Well, I think it would be wrong of me to talk about what I've said to the President before the President has actually received it,'' Mr Abbott said.

"But I just want to stress that as far as I am concerned one of the fundamental tasks of any Australian government, but certainly one of the fundamental tasks of my Government, is to ensure that our relationship with Indonesia goes from strength to strength.

"Now, obviously there will be good days and there will be better days but my determination is to ensure that the relationship is constantly improving and my gratitude, as always, to President Yudhoyono who has been a very good friend to Australia, one of the best friends we've ever had.''

Australian officials have also described the phone bugging revelations as "not helpful'' to the task of convincing the president to intervene in the Bali 9 case.

Without a presidential reprieve, Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran face death by firing squad.

The spying revelations emerged last week in documents leaked by former US National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden.

They wouldn't care because they're already spying on us. In fact, they probably know that we're spying on them because they're spying on us.

I'd be as surprised as anybody because as hitherto all our spying has basically been outsourced labour for the Americans.

No way, there might be a few on the fringe calling for war (like there are as many idiots here) and sure there's a lot of sour grapes in their population towards their better-off southern neighbor, but no way would there ever be an actual war in the foreseeable future. Just see what the ex head of Indonesian intelligence said in an article I posted earlier as an example of what the people that make the actual decisions think.

Like what would happen, they'd invade Darwin? Keep it, FFS.

That would be incredibly naive. I think we'd be just about the only country not doing intelligence work if we went down the route of your suggestion

There's a difference between spying on threats to the country and other intelligence matters and trying to bug the phones of the head of state of our largest neighbour.

That's not his point. He was saying that we'd be the only country in the world who didn't do this.

Burning a flag is hugely disrespectful. Hell, I even hate people who wear it as a cape or other item of clothing.

But Australians can't really get on their soap box about Indonesians being 'disrespectful' when they constantly parody the guys name in such an infantile manner. As MvFCArsenal said, it's called decorum.

You seem to be in agreement with someone who did compare Indonesians burning the Australian flag to someone on a forum parodying their presidents name, after the flags were burnt.

I'm not really sure what this has to do with Indonesians burning an Australian flag, I've been overseas, and I've never witnessed Australians mocking the country they're in.

The way you lot go on you would think the Indonesians are acting completely civilised, the Australians are giving it worse than what they are, and you might wanna excuse a few people acting 'childish' when they see their flag being burnt on TV.

We're going in circles here.

I don't give a shit if some Indonesian mocks our PM's name, makes fun of us or whatever. However, burning our national flag is abhorrent, far worse than anything that I have said in this thread.

But lets bow down to our Indonesian overlords, as they can do no wrong.
