IS TONY Abbott about to raise the GST?

Labor has accused the Prime Minster of using coded language to lay the groundwork for raising the goods and services tax.

Shadow assistant treasurer Andrew Leigh has seized on a speech given by Mr Abbott at the weekend in which he said the “dog’s breakfast” of federation needed to be fixed.

Although he didn’t mention the GST explicitly, Mr Abbott said his government would be ready to work with states on reforms to improve their tax base — including changes to indirect taxes.

Mr Leigh said the Prime Minister had “resorted to code language” on his plans to increase the GST.

“What Tony Abbott wants to do ought to cause the hairs on the back of Australians’ necks to stand up,” he told reporters in Canberra.

The government had stripped $80 billion in health and education funding in the May budget “to starve the states into submission, so they go along with what the Liberal party has always wanted, which is a higher GST,” he said.

In a speech in Tenterfield on Saturday night, Mr Abbott said he wanted to resolve the mismatch between what states are expected to do and what they can afford.

The states spend a combined $230 billion a year but only raise $130 billion from their own taxes and charges.

Mr Abbott said playing a “rule in, rule out” game would only generate fear but emphasised his government was determined to avoid increasing the overall tax burden.

“The Commonwealth would be ready to work with states on a range of tax reforms that could permanently improve the states’ tax base — including changes to the indirect tax base, with compensating reductions in income tax,” he said.

Speaking in Parliament today, Mr Abbott made clear his aim was GST reform — but not yet.

Mr Abbott invited Opposition Leader Bill Shorten to join a “mature” discussion on Commonwealth/state relations, with tax changes on the agenda.

Mr Shorten had reminded Mr Abbott his election promise of no GST change this term in office.

“I want to assure members opposite that we will certainly keep our commitments,” he said.

“But on the subject of the GST, as is well-known, any change to the GST is a matter for the States.”

lol Tone isn't dumb, he will just hamstring the states until they are frothing to raise the GST in order to cover the Federally forced shortfalls.

Then it'll just be "well the states wanted it so we obliged" tagline.

Our state government raised a levy and blamed the federal government shortfall in funding for the reason. Shortly after they got a boost in the polls. That's how unpopular the feds are here :lol:

Napthine is in election mode and wants to distance himself from the federal Libs. Would be surprised if the same doesn't happen with Newman in Qld and Baird in NSW with elections coming up. Will be even worse if they Liberal party lose a couple of those elections.

i know your joking.....you would have to be, even the judge who dismissed the charges mentioned that she had dubious legal practices while working for slater & gordon, they just didn't have enough evidence to make a conviction, hence the comments about the union guys covering their tracks.......it's well known in the construction industry how the unions work and the grubs they are.....

It's amazing how you can claim to be non-partisan and be this completely lacking of any sense of hypocrisy the way you approach two very similar situations.

Abbotts indecent incident was fictitious.....Gillards involvement in the rorts and slush funds is not in dispute, only that she could not be implicated well enough to get a conviction, you only need read the bars comments about her and her involvement and then the comments on the way she conducted her legal practices.......it's that simple. she just did an Alan Bond and responded "i can't recall", "i have no knowledge", "not that i am aware".........all covered up by the unions.
she was involved with the wrong people for the wrong reason and got out of it like the slippery rat that she is.....

and just to clarify i am non-partisan to a fair degree, however i have read a lot about Gillard and i do not like her at all, she is a lying, deceitful conniving low life scumbag who (we all know) will lie and back stab her way into and out of anything that suits her needs........ she is so low she can walk under a snake on stilts with a top hat on and still have ample clearance.

brandis came our and said the royal commission did it's job and cleared Gillard . Even though a lot of people said it was just a personal witch hunt by the libs . Easy way to get people on side by targeting the "corrupt " unions
