Todays little speech will be chock full of stupid buzzword tag lines like all of Tony's reign has been so far. "No longer giving the benefit of the doubt" "Time to re-draw the lines" FFS. This inept kunt. -PB

"The Death Cult (tm)" wants to take our freedoms away so we need to take away your individual freedoms and your privacy so the terrorists don't win. Young Muslims are being seduced by "The Death Cult (tm)" when they are alienated from society and self-radicalised so we're going to clamp down harder on Young Muslims and alienate more of them.

I've a right to privacy that shouldn't be breached unless there is serious evidence (along with a lawful and independently arbitrated warrant) to suggest I've done something wrong. I'd take the minimal risk of being a victim of crime over every single Australian being monitored.
It's not like they're going to be monitoring your posts on 442, 443, and having round table discussions and web conferences with CIA regarding your internet usage. There's millions of Australians using the internet everyday as if they are going to care what riff raff like you and me look at on the net. Your precious civil liberties won't be trampled on because unless you're looking up kiddie porn or planning a terrorist attack your precious data will stay a secret, you are simply no concern. I have no concern with ASIO monitoring my data because I know they're not gonna waste precious time and resources on a joe blow like me - but I understand some people so feel so important and special that they think they will be personally targeted. I actually feel like this measure enhances my civil liberties because it will enable ASIO to more effectively detect and track terrorist behaviour and I can't think of anything more violating of civil liberties than to be beheaded or blown up.

I just rattled off my own drawn line to my local MP. Hopefully it wasn't strident enough to put me on a watchlist, but strident enough to show I mean business.

I'm glad the government is taking a proactive aggressive response to terrorism. I get that there are people out there who think showering terrorist groups like ISIS and their sympathisers with love and compassion might get them to change their minds and become do gooder citizens, but such thought is terribly naive. Words, love, tolerance kindness won't dissuade those who want to establish a caliphate and roll out shariah law here in Australia, laws which are unambiguous and punitive will give us the best chance of countering terrorism.
I sense some people are fearful that taking action against terrorist and their sympathisers might result in some blow back, but whatever we do a terrorist attack is probably inevitable and doing nothing won't do anything to stop those who are hellbent on creating an Islamic society in Australia. These people don't want to live in an open, tolerant society respecting of their beliefs, they want to establish Islam here and if that means blowing up bombs and beheading random citizens then we shouldn't the status quo will continue to work when it's obviously failing.

Storing people's data will not stop terrorism. The police have already foiled a number of attacks without the need to store data. Lone wolf's like Monis won't be stopped because they aren't collaborating with anyone.

On a side note, trying to find info on this story and the internet news media pages are being dominated by "Naomi Watt are you wearing" stories from the Oscars.

Amazingly intellectual discussion going on. Good on both of you Rustys arguments have been thoroughly dismantled, he's now essentially just an echo chamber and is mocked accordingly. He has been invited many times to engage with the argument at hand and has ignored it.

I don't know anyone who thinks data retention is going to stop terrorism. Guns won't stop crime, it doesn't mean cops should stop using guns.

He has been invited many times to engage with the argument at hand and has ignored it. I've made my position on terrorism clear. What you've avoided this whole time is making an argument on the central issue of how terrorism, terrorists and their sympathisers should be dealt with. It's obvious you don't have any clear ideas or solutions here, so you just stick to peripheral issues such a data retention which are ostensibly less confronting than terrorism, but you can magnify 1000x in your mind and make out as if it's the big issue. There's no point arguing with someone who refuses to argue the central issue or denies its existence completely.

This. The other part that rusty ignores is the fact that he's making essentially a political speech at the AFP headquarters.
