-PB benelsmore. I give zero f*cks about the minimum wage. Just find it amusing and also frustrating how people seem to over-value themselves/always demand more. In this day and age we're lucky to have a job period!

Scapegoats. Scapegoats everywhere
He was a man of specific quirks. He believed that all meals should be earned through physical effort. He also contended, zealously like a drunk with a political point, that the third dimension would not be possible if it werent for the existence of water.

Mind you the most people complaining about the increases are the ones with better paying jobs than the people complaining about.

I can't imagine $16 is going to make renting in Sydney/Melbourne much easier. $16 a week is higher than the rate of inflation I saw. What more can you ask for?

Even for what used to be "unskilled" jobs like lawnmowing for the council or working in a bloody bar for example means you need to do half a dozen courses before you can wield a whippersnipper or pour a beer. The RSA course is a perfect example of the over regulated nanny state that Australia has become. Before: Manager: If some bloke comes to the bar and he's too pissed cut him off or if you're not sure come and see me and I'll decide. You: Ok. Manager: And if I see you serving pissed cunce you'll get the arse. You: Righto. Not these days. Edited by MUNRUBENMUZ: 8/6/2015 10:05:05 PM

I had 3 friends do the course. 1 is doing a PhD and the other two are working in unrelated fields. There is so little chance of snagging placement because of 'ethics' or some bullsh*t.

-PB the unions Are they? -PB yep....never stop..... It's the Union's job to complain and get the best that they can for their members. They were always going to complain. I was talking to the mrs about it. She's on a part time minimum wage. The way we see it, if we have to pay more to remove the wage gap between the low end of the scale and the middle of the scale, we'd stop going out as much as we do. As in say if going out to dinner cost $75 instead of $50, we'd go out once a fortnight instead of once a week for dinner. Also if the wage gap increases it means people who work at Coles/Woolies etc will be afforded a wage increase. That means Coles and Woolies need to increase their prices to maintain their margins. So the extra money paid to close the wage gap is spent paying more for basic items?

In the construction industry I find that the biggest issues come from people who think they know everything because they have a 'degree in this' or a 'certificate in that'. A recent example was a senior site engineer making a near vertical cut next to a 3 lane pacific highway. If it rained he was in a world of trouble. Education and certificates/degrees count for nothing if you don't think about what you're doing.

Maybe. Why are there "over educated fuckwits" in the first place? It's our generation that set up the shit show that's going on now. Fucking training courses to tell you to not stand too close to a door in case someone opens it and belts you in the scone. FFS. Let blokes get clobbered once and next time they won't stand so close. Young people are capable of pretty much anything if shown how. Lack of "common sense" is due only to these blokes not learning about whatever from capable and well skilled older colleagues. Heard an old bloke on the radio the other day positing that maybe the dramas these days about "Gen Y" are due, in part, that back in the day if something broke you fixed it. And if you had a son he was likely by your side learning how it was all done. These days one of 2 things is likely to happen. 1) Item breaks so Dad bins it and buys a new one or 2) Dad calls in someone to fix it. No kid is going to learn any practical skills in either of the above scenarios. My Dad hand built our whole house. Right down to the dovetail joints in the drawers throughout the house but even he said when I was a kid you'd never bother doing that anymore. Just buy it, it's cheaper and easier.

They were always going to complain. Agreed, except for the SDA who seem more interested in being chummy with the retailers than the workers. No wonder the libs like them  benelsmore wrote:I was talking to the mrs about it. She's on a part time minimum wage. By that theory, then a whole group of people that couldn't afford to go at all for dinner might be able to start. As salaries tend to be a bit of a pyramid with less people in the higher pay scales (not exactly true at the bottom but close enough), these business might actually make more money. This affect is over stated too, raising wages is just as likely to decrease profit margins as an increase in prices could reduce the volume of sales. A wage rise to the low income earners is essentially wealth redistribution because as far as the private sector is concerned they can only spend the money they have which means someone loses out (usually people at the higher end). The whole "lower wages and there will be more people employed" argument pushed by the Liberal party was tried during the great depression and it had no effect on employment levels. All it did was make those that had a job richer in real terms (as everything was cheaper).

No not at all. However, seeing the stories all over the internet these days, the people who would benefit from an increased minimum wage would be able to survive instead of being completely screwed. It would mean they can afford to pay bills on time not go out to restaurants. mcjules wrote: This affect is over stated too, raising wages is just as likely to decrease profit margins as an increase in prices could reduce the volume of sales. It seems like the people in the middle (myself included) are usually the ones who lose out. I don't see the big players reducing their profit margins. They essentially just charge more or screw down their suppliers even more. It's like saying Caltex will lose money to keep petrol prices down. Not a chance. mcjules wrote: The whole "lower wages and there will be more people employed" argument pushed by the Liberal party was tried during the great depression and it had no effect on employment levels. True. I just think that if you push up the bottom line companies fearing instability won't budge on their bottom lines. Being in consulting my charge out rate used to be $120/hour. It's now $160 because of my experience and salary. Margins need to be maintained to make things tick. I'm sure this would be echoed across the board.
