In the construction industry I find that the biggest issues come from people who think they know everything because they have a 'degree in this' or a 'certificate in that'. A recent example was a senior site engineer making a near vertical cut next to a 3 lane pacific highway. If it rained he was in a world of trouble. Education and certificates/degrees count for nothing if you don't think about what you're doing. why in the world would he do that?? Fucking idiot

-PB This will blow your mind a bit. Had to see a solicitor once about some dramas I was having and as luck would have it there was a solicitor on the team I was playing with. In I went for some general advice and straight off the bat he tells me that his normal charge out rate is $500 / hr but seeing as we were mates he'd only bill me $300 / hr. $1000 for a review of the docs, a discussion of the docs and some advice via email. How anyone can afford to get proper representation is beyond me. If that bloke spent a full working week on your case you'd be $20k in the hole ! !

Because maybe someone smarter than the junior engineer sat down with his slide rule and log tables and decided that, having applied the appropriate safety factors that, in his esteemed opinion and experience built up over many years, that that excavation would stand up. It's not rocket science. It's engineering.

Umm benelsmore stated it was a senior site engineer. Not a junior cadet. Hell my trainer is a builder and is still bewildered by some of his site supervisors lack of awareness.

Benelsmore is the Junior engineer in this story. The senior site engineer followed the plans which, seeing they were on site as the construction issue, were no doubt designed and certified by a geotechnical / structural engineer that knew his shit. Likely also that the design would have been internally reviewed by his colleagues and deemed appropriate. If there were doubts and they were valid then by all means bring them up but if some spotty 3 years out engineer tried to tell me what was what when I've been doing the job for 20 years and I thought it was going to be fine I wouldn't be the happiest chappy.

They're not mutually exclusive. I'd say 3 years out based on his charge out rate and the fact he's not an RPEQ yet. Irrespective of that the rest of my comments still stand. What you, or he, thinks is silly or dangerous or wrong may be fine.

And just some free advice for Benels. You should limit slagging off your fellow professionals because engineering in Qld is a very small club.

But unless he's spoken to the design engineer (because it was on the plans right) then who knows if it was foolhardy or not. I don't think there's any real drama talking about blokes he's having trouble dealing with here getting back to anyone on site. It was more a general comment that the engineering fraternity in QLD is a very small group of professionals and word gets around quick so it may pay to be a little circumspect around your colleagues. That was all. Not sure what 433 is on about. Just the usual add nothing of value rubbish I suppose.

Also unlikely to be real drama but you never know. I'm general though there was a bit too much detail. I'm not in the industry but if it's anything like mine I'd be able to find out everything about that project. Having worked in Brisbane and Adelaide, they're both small enough that you'd want to make sure not to burn bridges. It's not a bad policy anywhere really.

That's the problem with jack of all trades people. They think they know everything about everything because they have 'senior' in front of their title.
