He's a treasure. High school feels a long time ago for me these days so it's good to reflect back on how juvenile and naive kids that age are.

Plus that chimp pic is adorable. :) Here's a video

I'm not sure if you're trying to be racist because I'm half Aboriginal or what, but it says a lot about you if a primitive primate like myself is more forward looking and progressive than you. Comparatively, you're still on the shores of the ocean literally eating seal turds.

Better than being a conservative, scientifically illiterate, socially unconscious sack of cannon fodder, buddy.

Wind turbines are clearly not ugly.

They appear tranquil.

A coal power plant is ugly as sin, however.

Yeh but I wonder how pretty digging Neodymium out of the ground for the magnets in wind turbines is?

I think we both know that the negative impact of acquiring something that will be used to renewable purposes is good progress from digging up coal and burning it forever.

Do you know how hard Neodymium can be to get to and to extract? It doesn't exist in nature and is pretty much restricted to Monzanite deposits.

But progress marches on. Germans are trying to avoid rare earth magnets all together.

Discussion about neodymium – ENERCON does not use material

In recent weeks, media reports about the use of neodymium in wind energy converters gave rise to public discussions. The element belongs to the rare earth metals and is mined primarily in China − sometimes at the expense of health hazards and considerable damage to the environment. ENERCON wind energy converters generate environmentally-friendly power totally without neodymium. The gearless design on which all wind turbine types – from the E-33/330 kW to the E-126/7.5 MW – are based employs an annular generator with separate excitation. The magnetic fields required by the generator to produce electricity are created electrically. Due to this design, ENERCON turbines are built completely without permanent magnets.

Created electrically means they use the coal/nuclear powered grid? It's the prius version of energy generation.

This is not directed at you at all Glenn just a general comment but I am continually bewildered by environmentalists who seem to think that there is an alternative to mining. As if removing coal from the equation kills mining in Australia because power generation will not require mining. Little do they know that they drive on roads build from blasting basalt/andesite/greywacke, use computers with copper wiring, gold components and plastics made from petroleum etc etc.

I think there is a complete lack of understanding regarding what it actually takes to construct house hold items. In this day and age we take a lot of basic things for granted and produce unreasonable expectations for politicians and companies.

I agree with you, my general comment was that the alternatives to coal are in their infancy, Solutions to their problems can be overcome with research.
Mining will never disappear, but reduction in mining by coal/oil being less essential is an outcome that will do good.

Like I mentioned in a previous post, I am far from a greenie but I do believe we need to pursue the alternatives.

I don't think so. It's an interesting strategy but with a compliant opposition and a supportive media people seem pretty apathetic about it all.

Whilst I believe in protecting intellectual property and dont support piracy, a law such as this can be used in a discretionary manner by the government to block any website of their choosing. This has serious implications to free speech, free expression and independent content.

Let this be a lesson to all those dopey ALP fanbois out there that they're no better than the coalition and basically collude for a common agenda.

When foxtel restructured its pricing I got a reduced bill per month and they threw in showtime as well so now I am covered for all of the shows I would/might have "acquired".

But one outcome of this that bothers me a little, beside the judicial side of it and the governments enhanced 'big brother' powers is that it trys to close a method to obtain the shows creating in effect a closed system again.

Netflix et al. can effectivly creep their subscriptions up as can foxtel as alot of people wont know about VPN's to get around this.

Pretty sure JJJ's hack surveyed people on this and the number 1 reason for pirating was the extra high costs we as Australians pay for digital content compared to the rest of the world. It does make you feel like "fuck it" if they expect me to pay 100% more just because of where I live screw them I'll download it.

Foxtel were pricks with me when they changed the pricing and it wasn't until I threatened to cancel did they fix things up. Got a better deal than what I was originally asking for too

No issue with legislation to block a site like the piratebay that really has no legitimate uses but the wording of the bill effectively allows them to ban anything. People who really want to pirate will get around the block and the government have a way to censor the internet.

We all agree the distribution models are out of date and that's where the problem lies. Why do studios think they can use Twitter, Facebook and other social media to create discussion and a loyal fan base but then make one country wait 3 months for them to see it? The internet just doesn't work that way.

We're expected to respect all their cultist beliefs however they see fit to attack christianity and european cultures on a daily basis. Leftists/Scientismists are an extremely hateful and entitled crowd who seem to be hoping for humanity to become extinct as long is it doesnt involve them personally.
