Not surprising that the request was made but it's amazing that it was leaked

Real question is can the flag makers keep up with the announcements??????.

Being in Japan and seeing what they are doing for renewables and general eco friendliness makes me even more ashamed of my Government.

I think it's a big issue. When we're sick of politicians milking the cow so to speak and shit failing left right and centre why not focus on civil rights :)

However old Bill will milk this for all its worth to take the spotlight off his own dodgy dealings.

Agreed. Would also be nice to see parties back their policies and only talk about their policies rather than trying to hammer opposing policies only.

Problem is it has long stopped being about policies and now is more about keeping your job.

Its nice (by nice, I mean the opposite) to see taxpayers money wasted on subsidising a leftist, greenie agenda

Does anybody remember a time when the abc was about reporting the rural areas? It was also a time when being gay meant getting aids. Now some inner city crunchy granolas want to push their agenda like its a matter of life and death.

Marriage equality is a big key issue especially in the lead in to the next election. It used to be a vote grabber telling the icky gays they couldnt marry. Now it has evolved into its true issue, one of human rights.

Whether we are in the British empire or not is an argument for national pride and really doesn't carry the same weight as this does ATM.

The LNP have drawn there line in the sand. We know where the Greens stand on this but they have no power. It is now just Labor that will either be in the opposite position or be 'Liberal lite' again.

The Libs will not only lose but get wiped out at the next election.
It will be the greatest collapse for a first term government since federation began

I don't disagree that it's a big issue but I disagree that it's a vote changer.

Putting the shoe on the other foot, whilst I was extremely disappointed Julia Gillard wasn't for same sex marriage, that didn't stop me from voting for my local labour bloke.

I suspect most Liberals (the irony) would be in the same boat.

True but that is also because there is no point of difference. If all the parties are choosing the same option, that option dosnt really help us decide.

I remember when Rudd got the top job a second time after he gave Julia her knife back, with only months to go he announced that Labor would make same sex marriage legal.

This sort of proves your point, but at the same time Labor was so toxic I dont think anything they said would have worked.

Its also an issue of human rights to not be homeless or unemployed, but you don't see people jumping up and down to try fix that. Take a walk down Belmore Park next to Central Station or St James's Station in the CBD and go tell me what issue is more troubling!

And on the point of the republic, I was driving through the NT and my friends were sending out postcards and were buying stamps to send them overseas, and on those stamps it had the queen of England on them! The Queen, a symbol of colonialism, genocide and oppression, but no, to the people: "Princess Kate is wearing a new dress" [-(

The old "there are more important things to do" distraction

Apart from the fact that there are people jumping up and down to try and fix that issue...
1. This issue can be very easily resolved with a bunch of people in a big building on a hill saying "aye" and a former general of the army signing a piece of paper. Why people are homeless or unemployed is multi faceted and not all of it can be fixed by legislation, we are in the politics thread after all.
2. It might not be important to you but it is to enough people that it is warranting all political parties to put it on the agenda and making it major news.

Its also an issue of human rights to not be homeless or unemployed, but you don't see people jumping up and down to try fix that. Take a walk down Belmore Park next to Central Station or St James's Station in the CBD and go tell me what issue is more troubling!

Beat me to it Mcjules.

If solving homelessness was as easy as passing ONE law. Then it would be done.

Marriage Equality costs nothing and only needs to be legally recognized.

All of your points are valid issues, but if you threw them all in a bag and said we are not leaving tonight until all these human rights issues are solved, I imagine the first thing you would do is knock of the one that requires you to move no-where, see no-one and costs you nothing.

The thing is, why do they have to change things? Im taking the point of view from the libertarian on q and a on monday night

Its a crime to be a homosexual for a vast majority of the world, at least this society is advanced enough to recognise that people are born with it

To the point that richard de natale found uncomfortable, the issue of parenting, its biologically impossible to make children with 2 people of the same sex

Everyone still has to have a father and a mother (biologically), yoh cant go around saying that adam is your mother, it doesn't work like that!

Parenting and raising a child for a same sex couple, which is already there is "good enough"

He also said that Royal Commissions were pointless - as Di Natale pointed out, "tell that to victims of sexual abuse"
