Well then arrest someone.

Wait, what? They can't?

Yes because that's not the main purpose of the royal commission.

Also I know Brendan O'Neill likes to call himself a libertarian but I wouldn't. I think he just likes to mess with people.

I realise that. Just a ridiculous amount of money ($100 mill they're saying for the Union one) for next to no result.

When same-sex marriage is finally legalised I suspect the next big thing will be another republic debate. Its been about 20 years, and I reckon this time it will pass.

Marriage equality is a big key issue especially in the lead in to the next election. It used to be a vote grabber telling the icky gays they couldnt marry. Now it has evolved into its true issue, one of human rights.

Whether we are in the British empire or not is an argument for national pride and really doesn't carry the same weight as this does ATM.

The LNP have drawn there line in the sand. We know where the Greens stand on this but they have no power. It is now just Labor that will either be in the opposite position or be 'Liberal lite' again.

The 'Liberal' Party are also anti-development- why aren't they legalising crystal methamphetamine, heroin, etc? Not allowing its production, distribution, retailing, etc puts thousands of people out of jobs and restricts our economy's growth...

A few comments on this issue.

1. A company we subcontract (drillers) have been directly screwed by this issue. I wonder whether the jobs data takes into account those who are not directly employed on a full time basis by the mine? A lot of consultants and contractors were banking on this project going ahead. Where are the bleeding hearts reaming the government of these poor bastards losing income?

2. People are always demanding jobs to be created and yet are having a whinge at 1500 being created? F*ck me it's 1500 in a region where probably thrice that have been lost due to poor mining returns. This country is certainly messed up at the moment.

3. Is there a need for a new coal terminal? Why not an infrastructure project to create a link to existing infrastructure to reduce environmental impact. I feel that dredging activities should be avoided at all costs. Especially with the magnitude they have proposed. That's not to say that the 'affects' on dredging aren't overstated. I have perused the independent EIS on the affects on the barrier reef. The impacts of dredging aren't clear as they do not have the data to provide a concrete assessment. They have simply said that with the data they have, the extrapolation of said data puts us in territory we've never been in. I for one find the reaction alarmist.

4. Where has the public angst against mining come from? I've noticed a sharp rise in anti-mining over the past 5 years. It's been a part of our country since its inception. The regulations are becoming more and more stringent with regards to the environment. I've worked for Arrow Energy, Origin, Glencore/Xstrata etc. and their regulations go well beyond those for commercial drilling for say high-rises and civil infrastructure.

5. I bet 9/10 anti-mining persons couldn't actually give an explanation on how shallow coal seam extraction will poision groundwater  In short it's not the actual mining process that does the most damage. Coal processing and washing creates a highly acidic/heavy metal rich slurry which is contained in massive holding ponds to be treated. One of my jobs for Arrow was for one of these ponds. However, if you want to build wind turbines you need Monzanite which is broken down using 90% Sulfuric Acid and Sodium Hydroxide to break down the ore. Good luck cleaning that up ;) Although coal waste is huge in magnitude compared to Neodymium extraction, the common argument I see is that wind turbines will effectively kill mining. No..... Let's not even start on Gold/semi-conductor components for solar panels.

6. The government picked a bad time to change this law. However it's far too vague. It essentially permits an endless barrage of challenges to an approval which can effectively stop any major development project anywhere. I see the need to stream-line the process. The timing is awful and I can see how easy it is for the enviro groups to make a case that the government is trying to ignore environmental concerns to take care of its mates in big business.

I agree with what you said regarding the average persons understanding of what happens, and that 'poisoning the water table' has become a buzz phrase you can say to look informed.

I will say this though. It is the right of an environmental group to oppose a mine if they want. Its sort of their thing.

But the blame of job loss and ill will the TONE patrol are trying to embed is BS.

If all the ticks and crosses had of been met then there would be no legal reason to stop the mine.
Someone somewhere missed something and it allowed the greenies to bring it to a halt.

I guess being somewhat in the field it annoys me how much misinformation goes around. While founded in truth to some degree, people are asking the wrong questions regarding the environmental aspects of the mine.

I mean how deep is the groundwater in this area?

People can oppose whatever they want. However, what I am seeing is on one hand people complaining about unemployment and yet on the other shooting down all proposals to create jobs.

You realise that when the current government bailed on all plans to go ahead with renewables, it actually destroyed more jobs and potential job creation than this mine is going to provide, right?

Another common argument is that mining creates less jobs than renewables will. People say renewables will create more long term jobs. I haven't seen anything concrete to back this.

The main Jobs I see are:

1. Research & development - Includes preparation such as site investigations/civil works etc.
2. Manufacture
3. Installation
4. Maintenance

From conception to delivery I can't see where all these jobs are going to come from. Any ideas?

Im just speculating here, but I know expansion to the GC airport was delayed by years because of a Green frog that lived in the marsh land adjacent to the airport. It was in the environmental impact study.

I would bet that there is some animal species that has a potential habitat problem, because those I imagine would be really hard to solve from the impact POV.

Possibly.

I know the GC airport is going ahead, the company I work for are involved with the assessment of Acid Sulfate Soils.

I have seen that there are two species listed as vulnerable at the Adani mine site. I don't know how this affects approvals.

It delays them which is all that will happen unless the cost to protecting the species is to great and the company pulls the pin. I imagine that they will solve the issues.

It contains Neodymium which produce strong magnets. Benelsmore makes it sound like they pump acids right into the ground. I'd be happy to be corrected, but from the things I've read about the process the sort of temperatures required would need to be done under high pressure so it would have to be done after it's out of the ground. Doesn't mean there aren't waste products of course...

Does anyone seriously think that all mining will cease if renewables dominate the energy industry?

Regarding extraction they put it through a production facility similar to most other metals mining. The waste I would assume goes into a tailings dam of some sort.

A lot of people seem to think that renewables essentially end the need for high-risk to the environment mining.

I see no point in Tony going up to the Torres Straight to try and look like a good bloke. Sure he's living up to an election promise but I'm sure all other sides of the spectrum will spin this to make Tony look insensitive or some rubbish like that.

I see no point in Tony going up to the Torres Straight to try and look like a good bloke. Sure he's living up to an election promise but I'm sure all other sides of the spectrum will spin this to make Tony look insensitive or some rubbish like that.

Count down to the inevitable Tony Blunder in 3.... 2..... 1.....

They wont need to spin much. Its in his DNA to fuck stuff up. Just a waiting game now.

What does he expect to achieve?

Are these people wanting jobs? Is healthcare an issue? What about literacy rates?

Short of throwing money we apparently don't have at these people this visit is a waste of money.

It achieves the number one outcome for any politician - Diversion.
The media are tripping overthem selves to come up with a witty quip about Tone actually keeping an election promise. He gets PR, the China deal loses some air time. Chopper gate looses air time.
He gets back and sends bombers to Syria, bam diversion successful
