Free trade is why most of our work is outsourced and we no longer have a manufacturing sector. But yeah, keep swallowing liberal dogma.

Besides, the majority of the text isn't even about free trade.

Manufacturing provides a decreasing proportion of jobs in advanced economies, as does agriculture.

Why are manufacturing jobs so special?

Advanced economies are underpinned by services and information technology.

Most tariff barriers have been removed previously - non tariff barriers are what the TPP deals with.

Except that our economy is based on housing price speculation and flogging it off to the Chinese.

So yeah, manufacturing is important because our economy isn't capable of being an IT or technological powerhouse.

Besides, the non-trade aspects of the TPP scare me more.

What makes you think we are any more suited to being a manufacturing powerhouse than an information based one?

The fact we are physically so distant from other countries makes markets which are based on abstractions like data and intellectual property even more important for us.

Regarding the "non-trade" aspects, the dispute resolution process benefits countries with strong legal systems the most.

Ignoring the hype about "losing sovereignty to corporations" the mechanism is there to resolve supra national disputes. It's no different to many other similar type tribunals that exist already.

I'm no expert in any of this but I did hear Tanya Plibersek say that they've (the Australian Gov.) been tied up in a Singapore court to the tune of 10's of millions of dollars over plain packaging with Phillip Morris headquartering in a country in the trade zone specifically to be able to sue the Australian government.

That 50 mil is legal to date. They're actually suing for $8b I think.

Yes - that is true. Which is why the TPP has a specific exclusion preventing tobacco firms from suing via the mechanism. They also have a more generalised "public health" defence govts can use.

Regardless of what you think of unions, it's pretty clear this whole thing was a farce and an attempted smear of ALP figures.

Yeah i dunno.... the CFMEU in particular have a lot to answer for. I would be happy if the royal commission was a genuine attempt to uncover specific issues of corruption, but it wasn't.

That concerns me too, but in saying that the companies who deal with them also do some underganded stuff as well. There is a lot of murky shit that companies do to get the unions to back off. Also biscutman theres things called mobile phones and internet now
