I don't mind Malcolm, but the problem is that the party he leads is a "liberal" party in name only.

They are a conservative party.

He is only in charge because the party sees him as the moderate electable face to present to the public.

With no formal structure of factions/groupings, Malcolm's position is totally subject to the whims of the party room.

The only reason he is in a strong position as PM is because Shorten is so poor in comparison, and because there is no conservative alternative to him within the party room that is seen as electable.

The only way I see him being capable of implementing the centrist, moderate policies of his personal philosophy is if he has a thumping election win and brings in a lot of party new blood who owe their positions to him, share his 'liberal' viewpoint, and manages to get rid of some deadwood of the Abbott-era.

There does seem to be some deadwood clearing. But I think the gap between the Libs & the ALP will close significantly as we get closer to the election and policies get released.

Because Malcolm will only be able to release policies palatable to the conservatives of his party.

It will be very easy for the ALP to paint him as being the face of "Abbott's party".

Interesting times ahead regardless...

Yep I think things are going to start ramping up post-budget.

Interesting to see the polls starting to turn already.

Although it should be noted that they are turning from a very high position for the Libs.

Quite sad to see Shorten and his cronies attacking Malcolm over being 'too rich to understand the problems of struggling Australians'. What a load of crap, everyone in Canberra is rolling in coin so to attack Malcolm for being richer still is a piss take.

You could make the same argument for a host of situations such as pregnancy (he's not a woman), rural things (he lives in a city) and so on.

Unless he's a transgender, Indian, muslim, refugee, war hero he's not going to be able to sympathise with anyone on a personal level

After the clusterfuck that was tony, the ALP should be cruising but Shorten is a no idea nobody and no one can relate to him.
Every sound bite on the radio is him attacking someone, no plans, no proposals.
Does he think people will vote for him based solely on "not liberal"

Its Politics 101 to paint your opponent as 'out of touch'. That's all Bill is doing. Howard did the same about Keating's preference for pricey Italian suits. I wouldn't read too much into that.

Ironically, the ALP has actually released a huge amount of policies so far. The most an opposition has released prior to an election campaign in living memory.

But the nature of being in opposition means no one gives a shit until the month before the election.

So, I disagree that Shorten is a "no idea nobody", I would just call him a nobody :)

I refuse to vote for any politician or party that spends more time undermining the character of the opposing party (ies) than sprouting their own policies.

Shorten seems to be the worst at doing this.

Fair enough, although I would disagree.

The nature of being in opposition means that happens. Not really because you don't sprout your own policies. Its more that the news media only broadcasts the soundbite attack of the other guy.

I'm not really a Shorten fan, but it is hard being opposition leader.

I hope you didn't vote Liberal last election then :)

In terms of preferences, Labor will be only in front of Family First and the Libs this election and a fair way from first preference. It seems like my best chance of ousting Pyne is to vote for Xenophon's candidate first. While I'm actually not much of a fan of this new party of his, it's the lesser of two evils

Personal attacks are so childish and these people are meant to run the country? I don't care if Turnbull is rich, just like I don't care whether or not Gillards husband was a closet homo.

Being in opposition doesn't mean you need to dig up dirt on the personal lives of the leadership. You'd think people in high positions would be above this sort of nonsense?

Maybe I expect too much from these people?
