Check out this advertising campaign for anti-plain packaging for cigarette packages. Naturally funded and run by a conservative think tank.

The accent is definitely the greatest thing I have ever heard

"apparently" "rolls royce" That was only part of it. Funnily enough, the Nats are the ones that originally coined "Fraudband" for the FTTN solution

But it's so biased and unashamedly anti coalition. That NBN question they could've asked any Labor guest for the last decade, instead they save it for Barnaby, like he even knows what a data network is. And where the fuck was Windsor when Labor coalition were formulating their fixed wireless , satellite component for farmers? The hypocrisy is palpable

It was held in Tamworth and part of Barnaby's electorate, where he won the last election with nearly 50% of the primary vote and had something ridiculous like a 30% margin 2PP last election. Should have been his heartland.

I feel for regional voters, farmers are generally conservative voters. I get that but they're only choice is to vote for a party that can at best be a minority partnership in government. Combine that with the fact all the conservative regional seats are held with such ridiculous margins that their issues are never a priority.

They need more Tony Windsors, Cathy McGowans, hell even Bob Katters and less Barnaby Joyces.

I don't really feel for them at all, they are forever complaining about being ignored but come each election day they'll go and vote for the nationals. If you want change you've got to start doing something different.

We all know that I'm not a fan of any of the conservative parties. I agree they should all vote progressive as far as I'm concerned

But seriously, there are people that want to vote conservative and evidently in huge numbers in regional areas. The big numbers are the biggest issue but the Lib/Nat coalition does regional areas a disservice.

Brendon Grylls in WA has probably been one of the most effective "regional" politicians I have seen in Australia in a long time. Partly that came because the Nationals decided not to side with Liberals in WA, therefore held the balance of power at the end of the election. Which ever party they sided with would form government. They pretty much held both to ransom in hope of benefiting regional WA (or as the Perth centric news refers to them as "south of Perth", "north of Perth" ... as it appears people living in Perth struggle to understand their state's own geography). His royalty for regions program is still being rolled out across WA!!

Federally I feel that the Nationals are too much of Liberals lacky ... a really strange partnership in my opinion as their economic models completely contradict one another (although their conservative nature in most other aspects suits). I haven't even had the option to vote (federal) for a Nationals member in all the years I've been enrolled ... due to generally living in relatively safe Liberal seats (my current electorate is regional and semi-rural)

The worst situation an electorate can face is being taken for granted.

Rural and regional seats are taken for granted because there is very little competition due to the Coalition agreement/merging. Back in the day when there were Nats and Libs running against each other in rural electorates, they had to compete to some extent.

It is similar for inner city electorates. I live in Wills - Bob Hawke's old seat. Been a reliably safe ALP seat since 1996 at least.

When it was election time you wouldn't even know it because no resources were put into the seat because it was so safe.

Well, with the rise of the Greens, and the retirement of the sitting member Kelvin Thompson, and a new ALP candidate who was given pre-selection by the head office over the protests of the local branch, this is resulted in the seat being competitive again.

Wouldn't you know it, all of a sudden we get door-knockers, the candidates for all parties handing out pamphlets and wanting to talk at the train stations in the morning.

All of a sudden our votes are not being taken for granted.

No matter your voting preferences, it is ALWAYS better if you live in a marginal seat.

Agree!!

I grew up in a safe Liberal seat, Phillip Ruddock has been the sitting member for pretty much the whole time I've been enrolled to vote. The only time any effort was made in the seat was after one election when there was a swing towards Labor, because voters were sick of being taken for granted. Some money was spent, promises made and next election was a safe Liberal seat again.

The other problem with safe seats is that the opposition put little effort into them too. So therefore neither make much effort to try and "win" the seat. It really takes a strong LOCAL opposition candidate to knock off these safe seats .... who knows has anyone else tried to replicate the success that McGowan had with the seat of Indi at the last election??

Senator David Leyonhjelm: "why are the childless having to subsidize those who have children they can't afford?"

Fair point but in reality we also subsidize diesel for miners and we also pay for healthcare for those who drink and smoke themselves to death so what does it matter? These subsidies create jobs which stimulate the economy.

Won't we have a more productive workforce with more (stereotypical warning) mums in the workforce rather than being at home because it's more beneficial to the family finances?
