There is also significant costs in transporting, processing, vetting, housing, training, providing healthcare and education. There's also community costs as well such as longer wait times for social housing, increased crime rate, cultural tensions, increased competition for jobs, rising extremism, terrorism etc. But by far the biggest cost is the impact of having possibly millions of flocking into Asia and flooding our borders, hoping to ride the Australian gravy train which will increase all of these costs tenfold. Build it and they will come.
Trying to spin this as some sort of economic boon is incredulous.
Language barriers are also an added..how can they be employable if communication is a problem? The learning curve is steep. What I've noticed in the last 10 years compared to the 10 years before that is that technology has eroded a lot of the traditional jobs that require little skill or qualification. Source? Maybe you should ask the refugees in Germany and see if they've found work yet

Cant see Shortens campaign based on unfunded promises, gutter politics and scare mongering being sustainable into the last couple weeks of the election. The mendacious accusations that the government are going to privatse Medicare have been particularly disturbing. it really goes to the heart of the kind of person Bill Shorten is trying to strike fear into the hearts of vulnerable Australians who depend on the public system to try and score a few cheap votes. Bill Shorten says Australians do best when you treat them as intelligent people, yet he is happy to lie directly to Australians and ramp up the fear rhetoric to try and get into government.
It really says a lot about Labors tactics and policies when the libs campaign has been utterly insipid and they still look likely to win the election.

Can't remember who said it but I laughed when I heard "negative gearing is covering for someone elses poor investment choices". It's a fair call, I'm just concerned that my house price will get hit and I'd rather not lose $20k or whatever it's going to be.

The ad is just embarrassingly bad. My only explanation is they hired an agency who secretly support labor and wanted to make it look as bad as possible. The line "i reeeken we should steeek wif the current mob for a while" while holding his coffee mug which probably has no coffee in it was particularly cringe worthy.

From the same article: "It’s also worth noting that Australian policy denied the right to work to some 26,000 people seeking asylum who arrived to Australia by boat after August 13, 2012, when they were released from immigration detention into the community. Many were forced to rely on Centrelink payments to survive. While the immigration minister began in early 2015 to grant such people the right to work, the process has been administratively difficult and many remain forcibly reliant on Centrelink payments.""When contacted by The Conversation, a spokesman for the Department of Social Services, which manages access to the Building a New Life in Australia data on behalf of AIFS, said it was “not possible to accurately calculate an ‘unemployment rate’ using the study’s data”. The Building a New Life in Australia study is not a representative snapshot of all refugees in Australia. As it notes, the majority of people involved in the study were new arrivals: 75% had been living in Australia less than six months and 85% for one year or less". "Interestingly, second generation humanitarian entrants have been found to have higher rates of labour market participation than the first generation, and in many cases higher than for second generation Australians". Most importantly: "The statement that refugees have an unemployment rate of 93% is clearly inaccurate, as the the ABS survey Characteristics of Recent Migrants, Australia, Nov 2013 shows".

Many polls base preference flows on the last election. It will be fascinating to see how it all actually pans out.
