something traditional.
as for west or western in the name, so far 76% of WS supporters want it in the name.

This is what counts, nothing like Roar, Heart, Mariners etc. Have you heard some of the MLS sides lol.

I would like to see West or Western in the name.

Forget MLS sides, the best names are in the lower leagues of American football

To the new WS supporters. what would you consider a success in terms of average crowd figures for next year?

I know most outside of west syd would say perhaps 8k maybe even 10k, but for those that know the region what are you guys expecting/would consider a success?

*fingers crossed for parra*

obviously its too early to say.
but if the club plays out of parra, and doesnt loose some supporters by naming it stupid shit like western sydney goannas, i would say the target should be 10k. i think every club should try and at bare minimum aim for this.

Places the size of Melbourne, Brisbane, Western Sydney and Sydney need to average 10K+ just due to their population size.

tbh I would add Perth and Adelaide into that. This year was the first year we haven't (I think), and hopefully perth can start to get more games consistently over 10k.

Looking at the city itself you could say Wellington should, but obviously other difficulties are there.

Mariners, Newcastle and Heart (due to victorys dominance) should be given the most leway I guess, however Newcastle have done fantastically.

I think we can average crowds of around 14,000 the first season with it dropping to 10,000 to 12,000 the second season.

On the attendances issue: If WS don't win at home regularly, then the crowds will struggle. In fact all teams should be going all out to win at home. One of the lessons the AFL learned with Brisbane Bears and Sydney Swans is that winning is everything. The A-league can learn from this.

I think generally in most sports winning helps to be quite honest.

Can't honestly see Jerry Harvey chumming it up with the A-League, seems pretty cosy with the NRL.

How long do people think it should be until the FFA release the name, logo and maybe the first staff?

Soon!

I just hope the voting is done properly for the name and colors. Not a winner chosen out of several options in one round of voting. Should be elimination till it's down to two options, that way most people got their way at some point (even if not their first pick) and would feel more ownership over it.

Personally to be more successful you would have:
-Full quota of foreigners
-About 7 to 10 A-League players with a few from either the AIS or national youth league
-Add any valauble players that are aussies abroad
-Fill the rest with NSWPL players

I've said it before and I'll say it again, the influence of State League clubs on fan engagement should not be overstated. I don't believe a "blue collar" image is the way to go whatsoever. MV tried it in 2005 and failed dismally. Ricky Diaco anyone? SFC decided they weren't "bling" anymore around 2007 and crowds started dropping off.

Obviously it has to be a long term project, but they have to focus on getting a squad with a number of reasonably high profile players. The area has to identify with the players. The way I see it, by all means bring in state league players, and anyone else good enough, but the focus needs to be on engaging the fans and on playing good football. That's how you'll bring football people out from Parramatta, Fairfield, Liverpool, Blue Mountains, Campbelltown and Penrith. And most of them don't give a fig about state league clubs.

http://theworldgame.sbs.com.au/news/1100413/Marquee-player-no-certainty-for-new-team

Quote:
A western Sydney team will become the competition's 10th side from next season after Football Federation Australia (FFA) confirmed on Wednesday it would bankroll the team to replace fallen Gold Coast United.

Despite the boost of an $8 million government funding package, FFA faces a big challenge in getting the club ready in time for the next campaign, likely starting in October.

But A-League chief Lyall Gorman, touted as a potential candidate for chief executive of the new club, said FFA was not starting from scratch and was building on work already done during an earlier failed western Sydney bid and previous submissions.

He said FFA would begin engaging with the community from next week, with "town hall" style meetings to be held in areas including Bankstown, Penrith, Mount Druitt, Blacktown and Parramatta to seek suggestions over the new club's direction and details such as its name, logo and colours.

Also high on the agenda will be discussions about the value of the franchise signing a marquee player.

"We're not going to try and buy Israel Folau off GWS but the question will be clearly asked in these forums over the next couple of weeks about the merits of a marquee player," Gorman told AAP.

"We've seen some very successful clubs built without marquee players in the A-League ... I was involved with one before with the [Central Coast] Mariners.

"Is it a compelling part of the mix, though? We've got to ask our fan base that."

While the likes of Dwight Yorke, Robbie Fowler and more recently Brett Emerton and Harry Kewell have been signed as marquee players to great effect, Gorman said he did not think it would be essential in starting up western Sydney.

"My personal view is you don't have to build a club around a big-name player, although I also think they can add tremendous value," Gorman said.

"But it's not a must and it's a market-to-market proposition.

"In terms of what do the fans want to see, clearly they want to see success on the field.

"But to build a strong, sustainable, viable club, you've got to build those core values and cultures that fans relate to emotionally, regardless of whether you win or lose on the field all the time.

"That's the careful balance you've got to have."

Gorman said he had "not even considered" the prospect of changing roles to become the new club's chief executive, despite his experience as former Mariners executive chairman making him an obvious candidate.

He said FFA's phones had been running hot with interest from potential coaches and players, and while there was an element of urgency to the recruitment process, it would not be rushed.

With FFA confirming on Thursday Gold Coast would not be represented in the league next season, Gorman said it was possible some of United's out-of-contract players, such as captain Michael Thwaite, could see western Sydney as a potential venue for next season.

"It's another option to pursue," Gorman said.

interesting article. I really like the direction of town hall style forums.

7. Where will the players come from?
Harry Kewell, from Smithfield, has been ruled out as a marquee signing despite having an out-clause in his deal with Melbourne Victory, but Brett Emerton, from Macquarie Fields, could make a surprise switch from the Sky Blues. There will be no shortage of former western suburbs juniors keen to return to their roots, while there are a host of players from local NSW Premier League clubs ready and able to step up as ''squaddies'' - among them David Vrankovic and Mitchell Long (Bonnyrigg White Eagles), Jared Lum, Steve Hayes, Luka Glavas, Tom Mijic and Ante Tomic (Sydney United), Travis Major and Daniel Bragg (Blacktown City), Jamie McMaster, Chris Nunes and Nahuel Arrarte (Marconi Stallions), and Kwabena Appiah-Kubi (Parramatta FC). The FFA also owns the contracts of four Gold Coast United players for next season - Ben Halloran, Jake Barker-Daish, Golgol Mebrahtu and Josh Brillante.

The staff needs to complete a full list of players coming off contract, I am sure there is plenty of quality out there and willing to come to West Sydney.

In regards to NSWPL players, there needs to be some players, however, the quality has to be there. I would say at looking at getting about 5 players from the NSL who are capable of playing first team football and maybe an extra few young players who are eligible for the NYL or who can fill in where need be.

The team has to be competitive, so flooding the team with NSWPL isn't the smartest idea but there must be players snapped up from there, just not too many.

I'm assuming WS will get Thwaite and Halloran?
That's the picks of the litter from GCU and is a good start. Shame Traore went to Victory, he would have been a fan favourite for WS.
Otherwise need a great judge of talent in there to spot some good foreigners, some young talent, maybe some hidden gems in the NSL and to make sure they only get the quality scraps from other A-league teams. A good season on the pitch is vital and will determine how the first few years of the club will be in which the club will be defined. Hopefully the FFA know this and spend BIIIIIIG on management staff.

Not sure about that he will have the pick of any club to go to I don't think WS will be to appealing to him.

if they are smart about it they could make a great team.
goodwin played great in the melbourne derby and may go for an opportunity to get 1st team football. neville is a good player but lost his spot because of an injury. add in players who are likely to leave their clubs + gcu players who haven't been picked up yet. thats at least half your squad. nswpl, youth and visa players can make the rest.

and anyone know jason culina's situation at the jets? he's not really a massive name considering he's been here a while but if he is over his injuries he can add real quality to the squad.
