Quote:
Western Sydney Wanderers FChave been officially unveiled as the Hyundai A-League’s newest club at a media launch at Parramatta Stadium.

Wanderers Executive Chairman Lyall Gorman and inaugural Head Coach Tony Popovic presented the club’s first three player signings - western Sydney products, Aaron Mooy, Tarek Elrich and Kwabena Appiah-Kubi.

The players were wearing the Wanderers home strip, designed by inaugural apparel sponsor Nike.

The red and black hoop jersey with white shorts and black socks provides Western Sydney Wanderers FC with a distinctive identity in the Australian sporting landscape.

The official club logo was also unveiled, incorporating the key elements of the Western Sydney landscape; the mountains, valleys and winding river system that runs throughout the region.

The badge captures the unity and intertwined multicultural community that the Wanderers will represent.

Executive Chairman Lyall Gorman said the announcement was a landmark occasion for western Sydney, for the game of football and for Australian sport.

“The arrival of the Wanderers in the Hyundai A-League is a truly monumental event,” said Gorman.

“Football’s heartland will have its own team in the national competition.

“The sons and daughters of western Sydney’s rich football heritage will get to represent their region on the national stage and beyond across Asia and the world.

“Even more important is that this club will be different – it will be powered by the proud people of the west.”

Today’s announcement was the culmination of a three month collaborative process between Football Federation Australia and the Western Sydney football community.

More than 1,000 passionate fans attend seven fan forums across the region and over 15,000 people completed an online survey to help define the name, colours, culture and values of their football club.

The six western Sydney football associations and NSW Premier League clubs from the region were active partners in the process.

Dubbed as “Australia’s newest, oldest club” in deference to the long history of football in the region, the Western Sydney Wanderers FC have, through their name, a linkage to the first ever game of football played in New South Wales on 3 August 1880 between the King’s School and the Wanderers in North Parramatta.

Western Sydney Wanderers FC will play their first match in the Hyundai A-League on Saturday 6 October against Central Coast Mariners.

Don't know whether to cry or hypoventilate excitedly over that badge.

At least this shows the FFA won't knock back an attempt at classing the A-league emblems up.

Good to get some hoops in the league too! :d

Big thumbs up to FFA, let this be the standard up bringing for future expansion clubs. =d> =d>

It's such a good feeling to get these things right. Could easily be in the same boat as a heap of other A-League clubs and their fans.

Welcome home Wanderers

Monday, 25 June 2012 12:27 PM

So it’s official, Western Sydney Wanderers are the Hyundai A-League’s newest club – and it seems FFA have got their first steps right.

Let’s be frank, there has been a certain amount of cynicism around the new club – matched only by the interest of football fans in what form the A-League will take in Sydney’s west.

Now the details are out: Western Sydney Wanderers will play in red-and-black hoops, with white shorts, and wear a well-executed old-fashioned football club badge.

For the speed at which this club has taken shape, I’ll admit I’m impressed.

The kit looks good – strong colours that immediately nod to football’s heritage in the area. And it doesn’t look like a brand new kit, as that sense of history has obviously influenced the design and provided a certain weight.

And the logo – again, it’s won me over. None of that weird “new franchise soccerball” exploding in flames out of some mythical creature’s mouth – it looks like a proper football club.

The first squad announcements - Aaron Mooy, Tarek Elrich and Kwabena Appiah-Kubi – are promising, if admittedly slightly underwhelming.

But the playing roster will be the toughest part of putting this club together, so we can be sure that bigger news is still to come on that front.

And a quick disclaimer – yes, this is the FFA website, so you might have expected a positive reaction piece – but this has been written entirely independently and will be open for your comments, good or bad.

I reckon FFA have got it right so far – what’s your take on Western Sydney Wanderers?

Great start, at long last, no it's full swing into getting that squad up to further impress then bring on that swathe of members!

Names - What is Jason Culina up to? Mile Sterjovski, ANOTHER West Sydney boy - he too without club and may be agreeable to reduced terms at this late stage in the career. Wollongong's own Scott Chipperfield too?

And as other articles have suggested, presumably, Mark Bridge, Ante Covic, Beauchamp, Shannon Cole, Ante Rozic (GCU CB and W Sydney boy), Paul Reid, Labinot Haliti and others will be signed up/announced in the coming days?

They could surely make an exception smaller scale marquee wise, for free agent Flores too? He would surely be a hit with the new club and it's crowds, including bringing some more instant success for the Wanderers?

The player rumours/links should be kicking into overdrive soon? Especially as surely there will be several more signings announced over the rest of this week?

Poppa will have some VISA players already on the radar too - May've even checked some out and/or know some from his recent time in the UK at Palace?

They need to have that squad taking shape soon, otherwise they will be even further behind the eight ball than the rest. They had, how long was it? Before this announcement, to do groundwork and negotiations in this area, so surely they'll have half a squad (dozen players) in a week's time, atleast?

BTW WHO are the West Sydney, as in, Western Sydney based fans here? I know there's MackTheKnife, SydneyCroatia and others, just I notice that the majority of those posting in the W Sydney threads, atleast at the moment, are fans of the other clubs, most based outside Sydney - including myself, lol. Including many of us going so far as giving our impressions and opinions, when they really mean diddily squat, as it's all about and for, 'you guys!'

Will look forward to the masses of Black and Red around here and maybe a few new Wanderers-based handles.

Great looking strip just hope the sponsor we get will look goo too but so far i love the kit and love the logo and also love the news about Parramatta Stadium getting rid of anything to do with Parramatta Eels ( even though i go for Parra in the NRL ).
As for the signings i know nothing about either of the players except Elrich and im very happy with him signing but just hoping Poppa plays him as a right back not right mid.
Cant wait till the jersey goes on sale and even the red jackets they look HOT!
