This. More of a buffer zone rather than an actual defense. Obviously one would do everything possible to avoid the zombies from actually locating you. Passing the time with a drum kit would be out.

Again, the real estate interest coming through - you'd be looking for:
- a house on a side-street in the suburbs
- ideally at the top of a hill to afford good views (and also because I hypothesize that zombies would avoid walking up hill).

Anyone seriously obsessed with this whole zombie apocalypse thing should also watch http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Life_After_People. Good break down of all the things that would happen that you wouldn't think of right away (propane tanks exploding, nuclear meltdowns, etc.)

We're all very very sad lads, by the way.

I've seen this, very cool, Damns bursting are a real issue, without maintanence they'll fail and burst.
nuclear Plants not such a worry unless they're compromised. Most would go into a lockdown failsafing them.

Where I live in the Blue Mountains is perfect, plenty of Off the beaten track federation houses built onto cliff faces with big Eff off fences and plently of land to grow crops. We're set, for our post Apocolyptic life.

Also Not Sad, just prepared.

Alert not alarmed and all that.

Im sure if there was a zombie apocalypse, you band together and will eventually be with people who know how to fly helicopters and what not. In the meantime, its lock and load with a shot gun and drive your way to such a place.

How so? Are you planning on hanging around the zombies? They are way slower than you and after you set fire to it you just need to leg it - though if you are higher than they are then you don't actually have any reason to worry since they can't climb.

Being above the height of danger, within range of a flamethrower and outside of the radius of the heat given off by flaming zombies could be quite the challenge.

Flamethrowers are an impractical weapon. Guns with a broad spread or high rate of fire and mechanical blades are choice weapons.

What hasn't been mentioned her are the Return of the Living dead Zombies. a Zombie that is only defeated by incineration and any waste biproduct that is turned to smoke, ash or seeps into the earth moves on to create more zombies i.e smoke goes into the sky, forms with clouds and rains down on to newly deceased and yet to be turned people to make them into zombies.

The unkillable and almost unservivable.

Where do we find these people who know how to fly helicopters and what not? That's my concern. Not being America I'm not sure where one would arrange an arsenal of weapons either. Head out to a farm and search for a shotgun or two, perhaps hope to find a cop who's already been killed..?

But also very shit movies and not worthy of discussion alongside the Romero/Walking Dead type scenarios. ;)

I agree Ben, But if you bring in the 28 Days/Weeks you need to look at all Zombies (voodoo controlled not withstanding).

Good to see another person not getting too over te top with the realities of the apocolypse.

These are the serious issues which need to be discussed.

For the record -

28 Days/Weeks Later - not real zombies, but in a frightening nod to reality they are both the scariest and the most plausible scenario, ie rage virus type break out. They are not really the undead, more the infected.

I Am Legend - probably the most survivable of the plague concepts because so long as you have a secure place to sleep at night, you've got free run during the day.

Okay so are we all in agreement that we should now only focus on survival in a The walking dead/of the Dead style?

This is the style that I have always based by Apocolypse on but I've always kept an open mind to other styles.

I am Legend were pretty poor Zombies in my opinion. More an advanced race of Albinoes.

I second this. Infected aren't real Zombies, but are a good sub genre. Walking Dead/of the Dead is definitely the type of Zombie Apocalypse that you have to work out your survival plan for.

Something I was thinking about is that extremes of temperature would be your best natural defenses against zombies. The desiccating effect of the desert would be just as effective a defense against zombies as sub zero temperatures, and in many ways easier for the living to cope with.

Except te smell would be atroshious, and desease would spread quickly from rotting corpses o fthe walking dead.

I say head to the cold, the snap freezing of Zombies (as they proved in World War Z) makes zombies more managable and stops them from being able to swarm due to snow banks and their bodies freezing.
It also contains the desease's spread from the rotting corpses and can also help hide your where abouts from non friendly humans.

Wouldn't be much rotting involved really, Australian deserts are hot & dry during the day and cold & dry during the night.

Quote:
Desert climates with low humidity not only decrease or obliterate fly and maggots activity, but can also halt other forms of decomposition. Very dry climates may cause a body to naturally mummify, converting its skin and tendons to a leathery and parchment-like wrapping surrounding the bones, while the organs decay by autolysis and putrefaction.

doesn't the desert climate then almost morph the Zombies into a hardened killing machine?

By mumifying the Zombie, wouldn't it then be less fragile and more likely to get to you without tripping over it's own intestine?

Finished Season 2 of The Walking Dead last night and straight away myself and a few mates broke into serious discussion about how we would go about our survival plan, I reckon we could easily enough lock down our floor at uni residence. It's the third floor on the wing, accesible from two side staircases with heavy doors able to be barricaded, the college kitchen has plenty of food supplies we could horde and we have a decent supply of baseball and cricket bats. A supermarket and pharmacy is close by for raiding supplies. The big worry really is the close proximity to the city and just no idea how populated with zombies the area would be but I have no doubt the place could be held if it was secured properly.

Nah, should make it more fragile as it is likely to rip itself to pieces by walking.

The main worry in a near city location is that there will be a huge zombie population in close proximity, and zombies are dangerous in numbers.

Yeah that's a big worry as I'm about 4k's from the Melbourne CBD, the place would hold easily enough I think but it would be nigh impossible to be able to grab supplies undetected.

Season 1 episode one explains the issues of a CBD location. It can be done, but you would be best securing all main exits sealing them up with blowtourches from the whatever department would have such things (I assume the doors are fire hazard heavy metal doors).

then use window's for your exit access, preferably via a more secluded area with minimal visual from peole on the ground or even at a distance.

I'd also booby trap prior to sealing yourself in the other floors to give you warning of othrs entering the building.

Finally I'd find a section that can be sealed off within the floor as a panic room, somewhere that would not be missed if you turned the door into an extended wall.

I finally got round to watching the first episode of The Walking Dead last night. Gotta say, I really liked it!

I’m surprised though that no one has mentioned the new MTV show “Death Valley”… anyone seen it yet?

The concept is cool… mockumentary type done in the vein of Cops. I also like how they’ve gone a step further and combined Vampires and Werewolves into the mix.

It’s not as funny as the shows tries to be, but at 20mins an episode, it’s a nice little night cap before I go to bed.

Would landmines be an effective buffer between you and the zombie hordes
