On matters recent, Preston were not in the NSL for the last ten years so what ethnic rivalry was there?.

I think NSL die hards need to get over dishing out the racist tag every time someone disses their clubs. Given the dire state NSL until its demise can you blame us for being skeptical of ethnic centric influences? What you think are racial reasons for not wanting you apart of the A league are actually pragmatic, your clubs simply don't have enough supporters to be sustainable and Anglo or other ethnic people like myself don't want to support your clubs. It doesn't matter if they are Greek, Dutch, Chinese, Irish clubs etc those clubs don't represent me I want an AUSTRALIAN club to follow. We want a clubs that appeals to the masses rather than minorities.
I'm also quite sick of hearing about how great the ethnic contribution towards the game is. Isn't a simple thank you lets move on enough? You might have brought the game here (not entirely true..) but you didn't invent it and were more concerned with protecting/celebrating your ethnic roots than engaging the broader communities. There were successes and failures in old soccer and ultimately it failed and needed wholesale changes to give it a fighting chance. The A league isn't about ignoring the past it's about getting on with it and doing what's best for the code to grow and prosper.
Also I think the "us v them" thing is propagated as much by NSL die hards than new soccer fans. Old soccer think they are better than new soccer because they ran the game here for so long and therefore they are entitled to god status, while new fans are fakers and should go back to supporting bogan sports like league and AFL. As long as this attitude of one group being better than the rest persists there will never be reconciliation.

As long as this attitude of one group being better than the rest persists there will never be reconciliation. The bolded comment is the key here. I've said this many many times and it keeps getting missed. Once the decision was made to go for one team per city - then the ONLY choice was to make each a broadbased option. No question or shadow of a doubt about it. The issue for me is that once additional options are desired/required, then a different 'flavour' could be viewed as a positive rather than a negative. Taking Melbourne as an example (and putting Heart aside for the moment - no insult intended to Heart) - if someone wants an 'Australian' option, they have Victory - if SMFC were able to put forward a solid business plan and demonstrate the required backing they would provide an alternative. No one should feel excluded by this alternative because if they want an 'Aussie' club they will still have Victory. As for the last paragraph - 50/50. There's a feeling among 'old sokkah' fans that they have been excluded unfairly after following the game when no one else did. Similarly, there's a feeling among 'new football' fans that because the game is bigger now it somehow validates pissing on 'old sokkah'. Witness this thread - started for no other reason than to denigrate 'traditional' clubs. Essentially saying "doesn't matter what you can contribute and no matter how much money you can find", you can't come in. Edited by Benjamin: 20/4/2012 12:04:36 PM

Ultimately, I have no problem with people considering South to have a different 'flavour', a Greek heritage. I think it adds something. No different to eating at a Greek restaurant rather than at your local corner hotel. My issue is with those who try to infer that non-Greeks wouldn't be welcome.

SMFC v PRESTON recently is another example - and the President of SMFC George Donikian regrettable suggested that future games will be played in a closed stadium. Where administrators see potential flash points they quite rightly act accordingly.
So the FFA recognizes this and doesn't want ethnic clubs because of the documented historical flash points - see above.
You can try and put your head in the sand and feign indignation but regrettably you cannot argue with FFA's position, and those who wish to leave OLD Soccer behind because a new directions is needed.
FFA will also tackle other flash points if the violence that you suggest increases - but I have every confidence that the HAL is along way from that point and would not have gained popularity and success had the issues of the past not been avoided.
this is not what you want to here but it is the position of the majority. George stepped down as president of SMFC about 6 years ago, so your story is hardly 'recent'. I am also still waiting on anyone to reply to my pointing out the long and historical evidence of violence between South Australian and Victorian sporting fans in every single code. Doesn't that indicate that no South Australian or Victorian team should be allowed to compete against each other? Or at the very least do so behind closed doors?

The exact same bullshit misconceptions and fears that they spurted out then i am hearing now.
The real shame is that the people who feel the same as those neanderthals in the 70’s should know better. No excuses. How many times have we heard soccer called the sleeping giant? When will we wake up? It’s hard enough in this country with the AFL and NRL trying to bring us down but we make it easy for them.
The so called ethnic teams that a couple of you are worried about would not or could not get into the a league, so why the fear?
You guys are sounding like some KKK Klansman in fear of the negro’s back in the 50’s. You’ve got your league and the teams you wanted, yes the ones you were waiting for all that time because you didn’t feel comfortable going to the NSL.
So enjoy it, support it and don’t fuck it up because at the end of the day the A league teams have had everything handed to them on a plate. The perfect start ,and before you say that’s not true just remember that all of the clubs in the NSL except for a few had to start at the bottom with a lot of blood, sweat and tears to get them where they were. Am i bitter? Yes i am and i feel i have every right to be because i can still remember every state and national game i went to through the 70’s and 80’s and supported my state and my country with only a few thousand others and wondered why aussie’s would not come. Well before the fanatics and the GG army it was the South cheer squad giving most of the support to our national team.
I am proud of the fact that i was in Germany for the world cup in 1974 and have some great souvenirs and memories from that trip. The only reason i am bitter and will remain that way is because of the disrespect shown to supporters like me after all we went through when the game was not as popular as it is today.
We were the ones to stand up and do what was needed to get our game seen as the number 1 sport in Australia while many just watched the EPL and didn’t bother to come until 2005. So you have it all now and you fear a little club like South Melbourne? Maybe we are not so little any more. What doesn’t kill you will make you stronger. Long live South.
Firstly learn what racism is before you start using that tag everywhere. Next, no one pisses on the NSL clubs they are just irrelevant to most football supporters unfortunately because they have not done anything to make themselves relevant to the local community and the a-league. The overwhelming majority of posts about the nsl come from bitter ex-nsl supporters and are usually linked with denigrating the a-league. This is an a-league site. Finally, not once in describing your bitterness at Australians not embracing the NSL did you consider that it was your club's responsibility to engage.

Very valid point. We see the ways that some HAL clubs have failed to do the same and the results are clear. Getting that broader community buy-in brings value if it is done right.

^^ I agree, although the State League forum is a different part of this site. Benjamin wrote:Heart_fan wrote:cro69 wrote:Arthur wrote:And if it wasn't for Postecoglou there'd be no Roar.
Lot of "if's" but the Knights have made it clear and on record they do not wanted to apply to join the A-League due to costs, having said that they have a few million in assets as they own their ground.
They still produce excellent talent I think you may even have one.
Edited by Arthur: 19/4/2012 09:08:48 PM The Knights have 3 promising youngsters coming through the ranks!! but due to the next to nothing coming in when premier league clubs sell to HAL clubs i think they will be paraded to euro clubs for a bigger return. One possibly might be as good as Viduka was!! Its an issue for sure, regarding the transfer fees, but SL clus will never really be in a strong position, just as HAL clubs aren't on overseas deals, when negotiating these things. The players hold the cards, and the bigger clubs will always hold the power. The MK are very much a great development club for our game. I can only hope that transfer deals can include more downstream benefits back to HAL and SL clubs, not justy the initial fee. Thats where the real profit tends to be. On players under 23 the clubs hold the power on overseas transfers - it's only internal transfers where they are weak. Any player going overseas activates FIFA's training solidarity/compensation system - clubs are entitled to around 40k euros per year, against the $3,000 they get from an A-League club. Interesting. The balance must be found somehow for the benefit of the game in this country. Losing talent overseas because clubs want to gain immediate return so early may well be a very bad way of developing our talent of the future. One thing to point out. A few on here say football is not a business??? Who are they kidding. Edited by heart_fan: 20/4/2012 01:21:11 PM

Anyoc you have almost brought a tear to my eye and just reinforced why I have not been to a HAL game I was one of those south supporters as a young teenager that would support the green and gold - Not as old as you as I was 5 in 1974 but I remember the Green and Gold army versus the Scoots was basically south supporters These days and it saddens me to say this - i reaally have not much feeling for the socceroos - I do not even know who they played last or who they will play next - I simply don't care anymore - 20 years ago I would fly anywhere anytime to see them In the HAL I am aware there is a grand final this week - Brisbane V Perth But I have no idea how they got there When I grew up I would get my head kicked in at school because I would pull out a round ball from my bag rather than a sherrin These new dawners have no fucken idea what our generation had to cope with to promote this game during the Holden/Ford era and now they tell us to go follow an HAL team because its "good for the Game"....go fuck yourselves A whole generation of fans are still held accountable for the fuck ups the game is experiencing still today.....go fuck yourselves I'll stick to smfc - an urge all traditional fans to do the same with their club

My point is simply OLD SOCCER whether you like it or not had a bad image, and the establishment of HAL needed to break this connection to grow the game. Taking the emotion of this issue away it is clear there was no alternative but to cast OLD SOCCER aside - sad but true. The only way to attract new money (sponsors and investors) was with a clean slate - this is what you guys don't get. OLD SOCCER had baggage of which Violence was the most newsworthy and exploitable by the anti soccer forces - HAL has changed all that, and your straw clutching to the contrary has no basis in credibility otherwise the media would be all over it. In creating the AFL all other state codes including the VFL were dumped, and yes there were howls of criticism but the code is stronger having made these changes - So to HAL is no different, many OLD SOCCER clubs have lost the spot light like those Aussie rules teams in WA and SA with the start of AFL. Progress has it's casualties - the change is for the better and painting the progressives as racist for supporting the HAL at the expense of OLD SOCCER is as childish and as it is offensive. Grow UP!!!!!!!! Edited by backfour: 20/4/2012 01:35:06 PM no need to report on violence to kick the game these days - the club owners and the administration screw ups including the WCB and HAL Expansion cause enough negative publicity for the tabloids Considering the money the game has received - results are extremely poor - there has been little if any penetration Edited by chris: 20/4/2012 01:44:16 PM

The amount of old NSL supporters that go watch HAL games is huge but they still follow their original clubs too. It would be a brave and silly person to tell them to forget their original clubs and only follow A League teams!! yet if they were to see some of these ethnic bashing posts in here they might reconsider following the HAL if ethnics arnt welcomed to games.

No you have it wrong B4 its about those who disrespect what we had and belittle anything to do with what was before. That is imaturity let's not forget who started this topic. Seriously was there a need to. So who should Grow Up? Please point out a specific passage where I have denigrated the contribution of OLD SOCCER to the establishment and survival of the game. You will not find one - I have great respect for it's contribution, but also am realistic enough to see it's problems. You are now clutching at straws given the failings of your arguments and lack of substance in your position on this debate. My support of HAL over OLD SOCCER is not a sign of disrespect - it's a vote for progress

Doesn't that indicate that no South Australian or Victorian team should be allowed to compete against each other? Or at the very least do so behind closed doors? Anyone?

When the VFL changed to AFL not one club got culled they all still remained in the new AFL. Read my post again - you will see I was specifically referring to WA and SA teams that were culled.
