I read that the seven kingdoms take inspiration from the Anglo-Jute-Saxon kingdoms. The Targaryens take inspiration from the Normans, the first men the celts, Valyria the Roman Empire, The Wall Hadrian's Wall, the Dothraki Mongols/Turks, the north northern England, beyond the wall Scotland.

The Walking Dead easily is, although I do love it.

I agree it's overhyped but that doesn't mean it isn't quality, the sheer scale and talent of the cast, sets, cinematography etc have it aesthetically as good as anything out there, and considering the brilliant source material they have to adapt from and the quality of the cast it is technically a very strong show that is not at all out of place in the best drama nominations imo, although I do agree it isn't deserving of winning the gong. It's only overhyped because it is able to appeal to a much wider audience base than any of it's competitors, and that's not something it should be criticized for imo.

Yeah, I get that too.

I'd also heard that the Lannisters are based on the house of Lancaster, but I'm not familiar enough with English history to know if that is accurate.

See, I despise the show's aggressive fanbase, something a show like true blood doesnt have. Althougg I agree, watching a show like Breaking Bad would also have an aggressive fan base as well on the basis of its libertarian values

a better show for me is true blood, its a show that doesn't lay pretensions to genre-defining, cross genre nonsense

I dont think the GoT cast is as good as its made out to be, the show started off ok with sean bean, but theres no James Gandolfini-esque figurehead after he left. For figureheads on television atm theres steve buscemi on boardwalk empire and also anna paquin (rogue from x men movie franchise) on true blood

I think lack of a figurehead can be an asset to garnering a wide fan base. If you don't like Steve Buscemi on Boardwalk Empire then you don't watch the show at all. It's easier to find a character you like in an ensemble cast. My missues loves True Blood but I think Paquin's character is a whiny little bitch so I never got into it. I just get her to call me when the raunchy scenes start.

I think the good thing about GoT is that you can fast forward to parts of the show you only take an interest in. For example I reckon the scenes on the Wall are pretty boring and I like the plot lines of other characters. So its horses for courses.

lulwut?

Sure, skip the most important locale of the entire series

when the grand finale battle of the White Walkers vs the Dragons happens at the Wall you can sit there going "who's that?" when Dolorous Edd usurps Mance.

I do watch the scenes at the Wall later on, its just that when a new episode comes out I skip it until I watch the episode again a second time.

I didn't realize he's in that, I've been considering getting into it for a while and this might seal it for me. Jimmy is one of my all time favourite TV characters.

This seems to be a common sentiment amongst those who don't watch it and it's something I can't understand, why deny yourself the pleasure of something because you despise how much everyone else enjoys it?

You clearly don't understand what makes this show work then, the lack of a figurehead allows for the presence of such a large and talented ensemble that makes the world within the show so unique and captivating.

Also I can't help but find that a ridiculous standard to have tbh, Gandolfini's performance and power as a figurehead within The Sopranos is probably the finest tv character portrayal of all time, the only thing that could compare in terms of longevity, quality of performance, influence on the show etc would be Cranston's performance in Breaking Bad. I love Boardwalk and Buscemi but as a figurehead he is nowhere near as commanding as a Gandolfini or Cranston type, in fact he has continually been overshadowed throughout the show by the likes of Jimmy and Gyp Rosetti. Boardwalk's biggest strength is the depth of talent and sheer scale of the cast and set, much like GoT.

Hahahaha. . Nah I watched all of it. TBH , I just thought it was a bit boring when Jon Snow was with the wildlings and they were suspicious about him or when Sam was fumbling his way around. The battle scene was great though. I don't skip it all the time, but for a while it was getting a bit boring. I think Stannis's arrival at the Wall made it more interesting for me and I doubt ill be skipping any more Wall scenes. Didn't Dolourous Edd die in that battle?

Not everyone watches game of thrones. Even those with the choice to watch it choose to not watch it. Its just 'not their thing'
I was at a bookstore where I was recommending a book for a lady to buy, I suggested the GoT series because it was so popular

Most book readers were pissed with Jon's story in Season 2. Its a 1000 times better in the books.

New Casting for Season 5 guys/gals...

Left out Arienne Martell.....

Greyjoy storyline is totally neglected?.....

Trystanne is rarely mentioned in the book.

The guy playing Doran is perfect.

The Mrs and I have finally gotten around to watching Season 4 (we like watching seasons as a whole, rather than week-by-week). However, due to having access to the internet, we've had all spoilers revealed to us already. Last night we finished watching the Mountain & Viper episode (Ep 8) - and my word, I knew what happened at the end, and even had been described it in intense detail, but it still shocked me to actually watch it

Was the guy who joined the crows,
but then tried to kidnap Bran
- was he the actor who played the main guy out of He Died With A Felafel In His Hand? Sure looked like him

I'm not sure if this is the entire list. They've also confirmed they are pushing the Trystanne/Myrcella relationship a bit more.

I really hope we get the Iron Islands storyline. It seems that they are major players.

Yeah same. I knew the outcome of the duel and it was more shocking than the book. In the book he just smashes his head whereas here he literally squeezes until it explodes.
