What awful writing. Build him up to love his daughter (including telling Melly to fuck off two episodes ago) and then turn around and have him burn her alive?
They literally went the Macbeth route, with the Selyse suddenly remorseful 5 SECONDS after saying it must be done, and Stannis appearing the cold-hearted bastard.
Ultra-mega-death spoilers below: YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED (regarding season 6 + future books)
Even though Shireen is going to get toasted in the books, it's widely theorised that it will be Melly going behind Stannis' back to revive Jon Snow (who gets shanked next episode, probably by Olly). Melly and Shireen aren't even with the war party in the books, they're still at castle black!
Way to ruin a character D&D. All through the series they've tried to make him look like the bad guy for some reason, and now they've thrown they're shitty OC into the series to top it all off.
Besides the Hardhome attack, this season has been dreadful and underwhelming.
Reminder that the books are canon and not the show.

That was my thoughts exactly, I didn't like Selyse's remorse as it just seemed way too out of character. My opinion of Stannis doesn't change though tbh, we've known he's ruthless and he's dedicated, in his mind that was for the greater good. If Ramsey and his 20 men hadn't have wreaked so much havoc I doubt he would have done this. I'm very interested to see how Ser Davos reacts to this. Also you should probably delete that last paragraph under the spoiler tags as it contains a pretty fucking huge book spoiler, I myself haven't read that far into the books but have had that spoiled for me already, it's not fair on others who haven't had this spoiled for them though. I have to disgaree with your comments about this season IMO, the show needed a bit of a slow burn period to set up it's next plot lines and the last three episodes have delivered in a big way. The last three episodes are arguably amongst the shows finest and we needed this slow build up for them to have such a strong impact IMO. This season has been great.

I didn't think Selyse saying it had to be done was her truly believing it had to be done
An important distinction to make is that George never said Stannis did it. In the books, Shileen is with Melly at the wall.
Melly could have well gone behind Stannis' back and done it herself.
From the very thread you linked me to:
"That's an important distinction. I'm pretty sure Shireen will burn in TWOW, but it will be Mel going behind Stannis' back. Especially since he has a quote in a released TWOW chapter saying "If I die the throne goes to my daughter NO MATTER WHAT."

And if you've bothered to read the books you'd know that it's not in keeping with book Stannis' character. In the released chapters of TWOW and the previous books Stannis makes it abundantly clear that his men are to put Shireen on the throne or die trying. The knight hesitated. “Your Grace, if you are dead — “ ” — you will avenge my death, and seat my daughter on the Iron Throne. Or die in the attempt.” - Stannis Baratheon.
Stannis is under siege for 6 months at storms end, they run out of food and his wife iand his men are dieing. 20 good men, shirtless Ramsey and some wardogs manage to burn all the provision carts of tens of thousands of men, and no one manages to see it happening. And the next day, when Stannis still has supplies and is sending for more, he decides to burn his daughter and only heir despite telling Melly to fuck off two episodes ago. Truly awful writing. And if you've bothered to read the books you'd know that it's not in keeping with book Stannis' character.
I have read the books, I understand that the TV show and the books are differant and enjoy them both immensely. The scene was well-justified in the scope of the show's circumstances. People criticize Ramsay's level of skill in the show by comparing him to his book counterpart, but he's not his book counterpart. Ramsay in the show is a proficient, deadly warrior and cunning strategist. The show has done nothing but reinforce that idea. It's likely to set him apart from the incompetent and cowardly Joffrey. If most of Stannis' food and horses were wiped out, leaving them in the middle of a blizzard, their options were basically to die. Anyone who would be alive by the time supplies arrived from Castle Black wouldn't be enough to fight anyone. Stannis in the show had literally no other choice if he ever wanted a chance at the Iron Throne. If he turned back he would be forced to winter at Castle Black for god knows how long and his claim would be forgotten and his sell swords would abandon him along with the iron bank effectively destroying his campaign. (Still a really fucking shit thing to do though lol) Plus you need to realise that like Ramsay, Stannis is not his book counterpart and is shown in a more villainous light in the show (burning his bannerman in Season 4) that's fine because it is a different telling of the same story. Enjoy the show and books for what they are and don;t compare them. Fair enough.
We've descended in pleb non-canon fan-fic trash already, I suppose it's only going to get worse as the seasons progress.
Doesn't the last book end with Stannis in the same situation but planning to burn Theon and his sister, with their Greyjoy royal blood, for the same reason. I don't see why they'd replace that plot line with this one when it seems like they're leading that way anyway
Edited by chillbilly: 8/6/2015 07:26:19 PM

Can't but feel Dany has bought the most fucking useless soldiers imaginable  The only useful thing they provide is there is so many of them to kill before getting to Dany. She better have got a discount for bulk buying.
