Read the other day that they have to tow the black box pinger finder thingamajig along at only 5km/hr through the water and it can only scan some miniscule amount of width at a time so even if they're in roughly the right area they'll still have trouble finding it.

Tony Abbott says rescue teams have homed in on signals they are now certain belong to the black box flight recorder from missing Malaysian flight MH370.

The Prime Minister, who is in Shanghai, spoke after an aviation expert claimed the breakthrough discovery had been made.

Mr Abbott said they were now engaged in a race against time to find the black box as the signal starts to fade.

He will meet personally tonight with Chinese President Xi Jinping to update him on the latest efforts to find the black box, hinting it would soon be located.

“We have very much narrowed down the search area...we have now had a series of detections, some for quite a long period of time.

“It’s now getting to the stage that the signal from what we are very confident is from the black box is starting to fade.

“We are hoping to get as much information as we can before the signals finally expire.”

The initial discovery report was Tweeted by aviation expert Geoffrey Thomas, the editor-n-chief of the website airlineratings.com and executive editor of AirlineReview.com.

Thomas told Perth radio station 6PR that the Ocean Shield and the HMS Echo have both left the search area “at speed” and sources had told him there was a possibility they had “triangulated” and located the black box.

“Echo has come along and done a radar scan, an echo scan if you like, along the bottom and they’ve had a return which is a positive, which may indicate the wreckage of a plane.”

He stressed these were unconfirmed reports but “if they are firm enough to say we have located the black box, that is enough for them to launch the Bluefin 21 to go down to the bottom and take photographs or scan the bottom with a sonar scanner.

“It will either take an electronic scan or it will have a camera and lights and take a photograph.

“If HMS Echo has come in and done a scan of the ocean floor over their triangulated best estimate, then all of the sudden you’re getting a very positive return off the ocean floor.

“Don’t forget, the ocean floor is all silt, a big object like a 250 tonne aeroplane, it is going to give you a different shaper return, rather than a softer return.”

Asked about the search effort, Thomas said: “I think they have done an absolutely outstanding job, I mean the international collaboration now basically led by the Australians, with the United States, the British,, the Malaysians and the Chinese. I think they’ve done an extraordinary job given the limited information they had to start off with... to have found this so quickly is outstanding.”

Malaysian military withheld data on MH370: source

Authorities from several countries were searching fruitlessly for the missing MH370 flight in the South China Sea for days, even though the Malaysian military reportedly knew the plane was not there.

A military source claims that once alerted of the missing flight soon after its disappearance on March 8, military radar picked up an unidentified plane heading across peninsular Malaysia.

The air force now admits that the plane spotted on its radar, some 320km northwest of the west coast of Penang, could have been MH370.

"When we were alerted, we got our boys to check the military radar. We noticed that there was an unmarked plane flying back but [we] could not confirm [its identity]," said the military source.

While fighter jets may not have had enough fuel to follow MH370, they may have been able to spot the doomed aircraft flying across peninsular Malaysia and beyond.

While Malaysian officials are yet to expressly respond to this latest information, they have earlier justified their decision to withhold data saying that they did not want to risk confusion by sharing unverified data so early on in the each effort.

Authorities searched the South China Sea and the Gulf of Thailand for more than a week, before satellite data led them to look in the Indian Ocean instead.

Malaysia's government has now begun investigating civil aviation and military authorities to determine why opportunities to track down MH370 were missed immediately after the jet disappeared off the radar.

"What happened at that time is being investigated and I can't say any more than that because it involves the military and the government," a senior government official told Reuters.

The source explained that, originally, air traffic controllers and military officials assumed the plane turned back to an airport in Malaysia due to a mechanical problem when it first disappeared off the radar.

The assumption, the source claims, took place despite no distresses call or communication coming through from the cockpit.

"The initial assumption was that the aircraft could have diverted due to mechanical issues or, in the worst case scenario, crashed," said a senior Malaysian civilian source.

"That is what we were working on."

Meanwhile, a senior military official also told Reuters that air traffic control informed the military that the plane was missing at 2am, despite the plane disappearing from radar from than 45 minutes earlier.

The standard operating procedure required when a civilian plane goes missing is to inform the military within 15 minutes of the plane's disappearance.
