In fact, here's another well sourced rebuttal on stack exchange about Sweden's supposed "rape epidemic"

Sweden, in fact, has rolled back many elements of their welfare state. However, they are far from becoming a 3rd world country. What is that even based on????

I don't think Sweden has been used as a paragon by "the left" for a while now.

I think you may be surprised at the level of intolerance that can exist within the Scandinavian countries. Especially Sweden - see the rise of the "Sweden Democrats" in the last couple of elections.

Over time, despite the issues we do have here, I really think Australia is one of the most tolerant countries in the world. Obviously there is the issue with mandatory detention etc. But people's tolerance of other cultures is quite high relative to overseas.

I do think we get unfairly tarnished as racists. I know from the times I have been in Europe that there is plenty of intolerance over there.

At least here our racists go to great lengths to claim they are not racist. In most European countries you have outright neo-fascist/neo-Nazi parties openly pushing a racist platform.

I don't think Sweden has been used as a paragon by "the left" for a while now.

I posted an explanation for it but in summary:
1. For some reason their HDI (Human Development Index) dropped in 2005 and everyone elses improved. The report took data from that period and extrapolated it for 20 years so of course theirs went backwards. No other year in recent times has Sweden had that issue.
2. Even with that dodgy extrapolation, it would put it at 45th in the world (which is where Portugal is right now). Hardly third world anyway.

It's all coming apart at the seams.

Cologne police chief condemns sex assaults on New Year’s Eve

Officers received numerous complaints from women who said they had been assaulted around Cologne’s main train station next to the western German city’s famous cathedral on the night from Thursday to Friday.

Cologne police chief Wolfgang Albers says witnesses described the assaults as coming from a group of up to 1000 men whose appearance indicated they were of “Arab or North African origin”.

I disagree.
Sweden is a very tolerant country. More so than Australia.

Lets start back at the second world war. It was the social democrats, the left, that helped the Nazis. The right was opposed to letting them use the Swedish railway.

Sweden Democrats, why do you think now they have approx 24% of the votes?
The did start as a neo-nazi party.

Under the right (M) they changed the law to allow ALL Syrians refugee status in Sweden. ALL. So make it to Sweden you are good. Wonder why the wave of people happened.

Begging is not illegal in Sweden. Go to any atm, supermarket, train station, alcohol shop there are Roma (gypsy) beggars from Romania/Moldova/Bulgaria.

Sweden always has a rule that an "unaccompanied minor" can get refugee status. That is why all the Moroccan and Afghans
have come claiming they are under 18.

SD is far right.

The truth is in Sweden the Australian right and left is considered racist because of its immigration policy.

So why are 24% going to vote?

Sweden will not fail as a country. They sell far too much military hardware to world for that to happen. Neutral ;). :-$

Stockholm, Göteborg and Malmö will not become right. It is the rest of the country. People are scared, especially the elderly and now females. They do not recognize their country.

Both the left and the right have an open immigration policy. SD has been the only party that said stop the immigration, have better checks, help down there instead. Now the left are changing their policies to mirror SD, the whole time whos politicians have been calling them racists and refuse to talk to them in parliament.

Social democrats are at an all time low in popularity.

There has been the Eu vote, then the national vote, then the refugee crisis. People are getting tired of it. I am scared when SD win next election or the election after that that the left will riot. The left are violent.

The extreme left do not believe in free speech, only what they believe. I believe in free speech, but dont always agree with what is said. The left sabotage, they destroy advertising, they cut of power at rallies, they send fake bomb packages to buildings, they assault right politicians. The left media is total.

Turkey: 10 die in suicide blast in Istanbul Sultanahmet district

"This is the heart of Istanbul's touristic area"
At least 10 people, most of them German tourists, have been killed in an explosion in a central area of Istanbul, Turkish officials say.
They say a Syrian national carried out a suicide bomb attack in the Sultanahmet district, near the city's famous Blue Mosque.
Fifteen people were wounded, the Istanbul governor's office said.
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Turkey was the "top target for all terrorist groups in the region".
His country, he added, was "fighting against all of them equally".

Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu has telephoned German Chancellor Angela Merkel to tell her that most of the dead were German, sources in his office said.
Turkey's Deputy Prime Minister Numan Kurtulmus said the suicide bomber was a Syrian born in 1988 who had been identified from body parts.
Two of the injured were in a serious condition, he added.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan: "We have to be united against the scourge of terrorism"
Eyewitness Murat Manaz said: "It was a suicide bomb. I went there and saw it and came back to the hotel. There was chaos. Everybody was running somewhere.
"Policemen did not see this coming. They were distressed but at the same time they were trying to evacuate the area because they said there was a possibility that a second bomb could go off."
The authorities are investigating the type of explosive used, the governor's office said.

Mrs Merkel had earlier expressed "serious concern" about the casualties, saying a German tourist group had been affected.
She added: "Today Istanbul was hit; Paris has been hit, Tunisia has been hit, Ankara has been hit before. International terrorism is once again showing its cruel and inhuman face today."
Germany's foreign ministry has on its website (in German) urged German tourists in Istanbul to avoid large crowds and tourist attractions and warned that further violent clashes and "terrorist attacks" were expected across Turkey.
Norway's foreign ministry said a Norwegian man was receiving treatment in hospital.

What is the security situation in Turkey?
Turkey faces myriad security threats and establishing which group is behind this latest attack will be a matter of urgency. The so-called Islamic State (IS) has been blamed for three bombings in Turkey in the past year, including an attack in Ankara that killed more than 100 people. Violence has also soared between Turkish security officials and the PKK Kurdish militants, with a PKK offshoot, the TAK, firing a mortar at Istanbul airport last month. A year ago, a female suicide bomber attacked a police station in the area on behalf of a homegrown far left group.

Who could be behind the latest attack?
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has blamed a "suicide bomber of Syrian origin". The conflict in Syria has not only seen the rise of IS but also strengthened the PKK's offshoot in Syria, known as the YPG. There was no immediate claim of responsibility, but correspondents point out that IS was similarly silent following previous attacks last year that were widely blamed on the jihadist group.

How is the Turkish government responding?
Last year Turkey agreed to take a more active role in the US-led campaign against IS, carrying out air strikes in Syria. It also allowed US warplanes to strike IS targets from its base in Incirlik and moved to tighten security along its 900km (560 mile) border with Syria. Meanwhile Turkish forces have also been targeting Kurdish militants in northern Iraq. And violence has flared in Turkey's mainly Kurdish south-east, where the Turkish military says it has killed some 600 PKK militants over the past month, according to Anadolou Agency.

According to Peter Agren, who led the police operation at the festival this summer, the controversy over welcoming refugees and migrants to the country may have contributed to a reluctance to publicise the issue.

"Sometimes we do not really say how things are because we believe it may play into the hands of the Sweden Democrats," Mr Agren told Dagens Nyheter, referring to Sweden's right-wing anti-immigration party.

So I guess a quarter of the Swedish population are neo-Nazi's?

Please hop off your ivory tower and put yourself in the average European's shoes before you call them xenophobic and intolerant.

I didn't say they were neo-Nazis. I said they were less tolerant than Australians in general. Whether you think the intolerance is justified or not is another issue. But in literal terms parties like the Sweden Democrats ARE less tolerant.

My reference to the neo-fascist/neo-Nazi parties was not directed specifically to the Sweden Democrats. That was a separate, but related point. I was more referring to the actual openly neo-fascist parties that exist all through Europe - not specifically Sweden.

I have been to Europe many times, I have relatives in Europe. I am referring to my actual interactions with Europeans that I have had when I was over there. My point was not really to tarnish Europeans - my point was actually to state how tolerant we are in Australia.

Happy to debate my actual points, but please chuck your rhetoric out the door - "ivory tower".... yawn.

Letting in hundreds thousands of unskilled, uneducated single young men sure was a great idea.

What would you actually do to prevent people coming in?

Build a wall? Shoot and sink boats whilst they are still in the Mediterranean?

There are no simple answers.

Aw no man did you run out of left-wing rhetoric so you resort to this nonsense?

I wouldn't expect anything more. How about grow a pair and give us your input? Or are you limited by what you can find on left-leaning media sites?
